Instead of doing a toy/gift exchange for Christmas, my daughter's kindergarten teacher has decided to have the kids do a book exchange for their Christmas party. Anyone have any suggestions for a good book to buy for a 5 year old girl? My DD is mostly into Ariel and Hannah Montana but since not all girls are into those, I'm trying to find something different. TIA!

The If You Give a Mouse a Cookie series is at Kohls for $5 a piece harback with proceeds going to charity.

Great series for that age IMO and def a great price!

That is my DD's favorite set of books! We've read those so much I think I have them memorized!

I also agree Mouse A Cookie series is a great choice. There are so many picture books out there you shouldn't have a problem finding one. Maybe it would be better to stay away from a certain character and choose a picture book about animals or something.

-If you give a ___ a ____ book series are great
-Fancy Nancy
-Amelia Bedelia
-Olivia
-Bad Kitty/Poor Puppy books
-Elephant and Piggy series (same author as the Pigeon books)
-Robert Munsch books
-the 'David' books by David Shannon
-David Wiesner's picture books. These have very few words, but my daughter loved making up her own stories and the illustrations are a lot of fun

DD7 loves Magic Threehouse but those are chapter books. She got a Fly Guy book for her exchange last year; I thought she'd be upset but she really liked it. I did feel bad for the little boy who got a book on manners though, he looked so disappointed.

Our all time favorite book to give as a gift is "Miss Rumphius" by Barbara Cooney.

It is a wonderful tale about making the world a more beautiful place, and the illistrations are beautiful! Truely a time-less treasure.

LOVE this idea....BRAVO to the teacher! :thumbsup2
Kids get excited for the "new book" it fosters reading, sharing and Excitement......READING is VITAL for ALL kids...Just truly LOVE this idea...my sons elementary school did this years ago...we read an awful L O T in this house, and we also donated books to the school library.A comment I always heard and STILL hear, is amazing vocab you ds has and he KNOWS what words mean and how to break them down,,,just Awesome!
By the way....the kids that READ do SO MUCH better in ALL subjects, not just writing and reading...Okay, okay, I'll stop now, :lmao: but
YEAH for READING.......:thumbsup2:thumbsup2
Oh, as for you Q, Magic Tree House were always a HIT!;)

One time I was helping out with DDs school party -I think she was in second grade.
One of the girls got a bodice ripper! The boy who brought it -his first language was not english and don't think his parents speak English -so I guess they didn't understand!

I felt bad for the little girl and bought her a book later.

I would steer clear of TV type character books. One of my DDs got a sponge bob book one time -and she wasn't allowed to watch spongebob at that age.
:santa:

The Kohl's books are very nice for $5.00. DD loved the Magic Tree House and Juney B Jones at that age.

My DS's 2nd class is doing the same, and just to keep in mind, not sure if you were asked specificially or not to get a "girl" book, but if you weren't.. there might be a chance that a boy could get it! DS's teacher actually asked it be "gender neutral".

When I did Mystery Reader for first grade all the kids liked the "Give a Moose a Muffin" and "Miss Nelson is Missing"

Have fun!

I will help you be OT for a little bit too.. Get your child involved with a musical instrument! He might be biased, but the Strings teacher at our local high school said kids who play a stringed instrument on average have a higher IQ and much higher average GPA's!!!

A couple of my kids weren't very interested in books/reading so to keep their attention I got sillier books. Ones they like are:

Duck on a Bike
Click, Clack, Moo
any of the "Froggy" books

And they also like the ones they've seen at school or ones where they can "read along" and predict what it's going to say like Brown Bear, Brown Bear, If you give a..., Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, and The Gingerbread Man.

Just take your daughter to the store and let her pick out a book. It's from her right?

Our instructions are for girls to buy for girls and boys to buy for boys.

The problem with that is that my DD zeros right in on anything Disney princess and Hannah Montana. But since not all girls are into to that, I'm trying to get ideas for other good children's books.

Thanks everyone so much for your suggestions! I found a boxed set of the first four magic tree house books on Barnes and Noble for $9 so I went with that.

My daughters class is doing the same thing!!! I am going to go to Kohls I think and get one of the "Give a Mouse" or "Give a Pig" or "Give A Moose" Books they are selling - they are $5 and part of the $$$$ goes to a charity for kids.... plus they are very nice hard cover books...
