Does anyone belong to a book club with a group where you get together & discuss. I need suggestions if anyone has any. Some books a good to read but not really much to discuss.

The best discussions I have ever had (thought provoking) was 1984 by George Orwell. It seems everyday I read something eluding to that book. "orwellian".."big brother"...

JMO! Book clubs are great!!!!!!!!!!!!:)

I haven't read it yet, but 2 friends of mine who are in 2 different book clubs both said The Kite Runner was one of the best books they'd ever read. Both of them said they couldn't put it down--literally. I can't wait to read it myself.

What have you already read? I've been in a group for about 6 years now. What we have found works well is to take one of our meeting nights about every 6 to 8 months & go to B & N or another large bookstore and do some shopping together. They often have suggestions for book groups & will arrange a seating area for us.

I know what you mean about some "good" books to read not necessarily making good discussion. For instance, we all love Patricia Cornwell, but her books don't really make good discussion books.

Some of our favorites have been Divine Secrets of the YaYa Sisterhood by Rebecca Wells and Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. We try to read an occasional book by a local author - there is a really good one by Billie Letts called The Honk and Holler Opening Soon. We try to vary our topic/themes somewhat: historical, literary fiction, comedy, suspense; it keeps things from getting stale. In the beginning we tended to read a lot of the Oprah books, but have strayed from that because many of them had similar themes or tones. Very good books though.

I think I have a list somewhere of our books if you would like more.

Just thought of another really good one - Brick Lane. About 2 Indian women, one who marries for love, the other an arranged marriage.

Two from our book club that were really enjoyable and thoughtprovoking are Middlesex and Poisonwood Bible . I also think anything by Wally Lamb would be great.

Another vote for Poisonwood Bible. We had a great discussion with this. Farenheit 451 is good for discussion as well.

I loved my book club until I moved away. We used to take our kids and eat and have a great time. My favorite was when Harry Potter was first becoming popular and my dd loved the books. We read HP & the Sorceror's Stone and dd got to facilitate the discussion.

Enjoy yourselves!

Thanks All. I'm making a list along with your comments on the various books.

We just started earlier this summer. So far we have read:

The DaVinci Code: Loved this & plenty to discuss.
Empire Falls: Liked this one as it is fictionally based in a small
town in maine. Good for discussion. I think there is a moving coming out on HBO this winter based on this book.

The Manchurian Canidate- This one I also like & good for discussion.

Letter from Home-This is a mystery which I enjoyed but not sure

there is enough for discussion.

Some of the members read extensively, so they may have read many of the ones mentioned.

Keep the suggestions coming though.

Love them both. I know this much is true is probably my favorite book !:teeth:

I seem to be having trouble posting! I don't know why my last post, posted 3x's and my last one doesnt show at all.

Anyway, I've listed all your suggestions then I go to Amazon to get some reviews to show the other members of the book club.
Thanks for all the input.

Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger is outstanding, everyone (female or male) I've loaned it to,loved it.

I'll second The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, although I don't know about it being "the best book ever" it is quite thought provoking

I also really enjoyed 1906 by James Dalessandro. It's a neat look at th 1906 SF earthquake. It's historical fiction, but a great quick read
