Book Bag question

So my kids middle school doesn't allow them to carry their back packs to classes. They do allow these book bag things that have two rope / strings for the straps and hold a book or two. For the life of me I cannot remember what they are called and searching online under "book bags" does not bring anything up. We found several of them last year in the various store but not so much this year. Walmart only had an elmo version which I'm sure would not go over too well in middle school.

If you mean something like this...

It's called a drawstring bag. I know that Dick's Sporting Goods has some nice ones for good prices.

Yes that is it! Thanks I will search under drawstring bag and check Dicks..

They are also sometimes called "cinch sacks" - so possibly search on that too!

Why are they doing this? Those are very uncomfortable to carry around if they are heavy.

I don't think they are as durable either. My DS never used his locker in the 4 years of HS so had a huge backpacke that lasted all 4 years but used the drawstring bag for gym clothes, gym lock and deodorant. ...not enough lockers to give each kid their own locker.

Well, in my middle school classroom there just isn't enough room for everyone to store their backpack in the classroom. If a student wanted to have a bag to put their textbook, notebook, and some pencils in, it would have to be a very small bag that would stash under their chair or table. (No desks in my school. Ugh.)

Our high school only lets the kids use these types of bag during the day as well. Regular backpacks have to stay in their lockers. Last year, we found a hot pink Adidas drawstring bag at TJ Maxx for about $9 for our daughter to use for 7th grade. Not sure how it held up...guess I should see if she needs another for this year.

The kids call them "sack packs" and it is the middle school bag of choice. They would rather fill the sack pack and carry binders than use a backpack!

The kids call them string sacks here, and they can be found at sporting goods stores.

The school is pointing a finger to the Columbine incident and others as justification for this... Kids are not allowed to have any jackets or backpacks in the class rooms.

They do not get to goto their lockers between every class, so they must carry two or three classes of books (yah right) at a time.

I agree these things are not all that durable are uncomfortable and expensive, but common sense is no longer common...

I found them a Dicks and lets hope they lost more then a month....

The middle school that I used to work at did not allow either regular or string backpacks in the classrooms. The high school I now work at does allow the kids to carry the string backpacks during the day.

The way I understand it, they are not allowed due to space issues. In my day we allowed to carry any kind of bag we wanted and these were tucked under your desk during classtime.

We have underarmor's and they last. Sometimes the string unties, but that's it. Believe me my son stuffs his to the max so he doesn't have too much to carry in his other hand. He used it all last year. It is still ok, but dirty!
