My boss finally put in for our bonus that we were supposed to get at Christmas. I thought we were not receiving it, but apparently he felt bad that we weren't getting it because of him so corporate let him put it in late. Unfortunately, there seems to be a problem. We received an email about what the amount would be. The amount is- whatever money we receive back from warranty work is split between 9 employees. This is the email I received
The amount split evenly between the 9 employees is: $3852.29. This will pay out on their next pay check (not this Friday's).
I took this as saying that the $3852.99 is to be split evenly, therefore a balance of $428.00 going to each employees. So I received the bonus check today and it's for the entire amount. Same with the other 8 employees. Our boss is in Las Vegas for an awards ceremony and the supervisor told us that it's a mistake and that we shouldn't spend more then the $428. My question is, how will corporate go about getting the rest of the money back if we cash that check? Sorry so long, but without our boss being here for the next 6 days I'm not sure what to do. Any thoughts?

When we are overpaid they take it back out of our checks until the entire sum is paid back..for some reason I was paid 4 extra days one week and then next week I got a one day check to pay it back. Others have been accidently overpaid by 2,000 and then the don't get any check at all until the entire balance is paid back.

I figured it might be that way. I don't like the idea of not getting paid every week, and assuming they're going to do our payroll correctly. If they a mistake this big, how are they going to make sure we're paid correctly for our worked hours?

How about not cashing the check. If you already did cash it when you thougt it was a mistake, why would you do that?

Can't you just not cash the checks and return them? Then they can issue new checks in the correct amount. Or do you have direct deposit?

There are 4 of us with direct deposit (myself included). The other 5 do not. So they probably won't cash their check, but my money is already in my bank account.

ETA: We still don't know if it's a mistake or not. It could be correct.

If you have direct deposit or had to cash the check to cover your living expenses until your boss returns, then I would set the overage aside until your boss returns.

At that point if it needs to be returned you can just write a check from your own account to return it.

With any luck, it won't be a mistake! :goodvibes

That's what I'm hoping as well. I was trying to plan a surprise trip for DH to Disney and this would definitely cover it. He doesn't know anything about the bonus. Here's hoping it's legit. :earboy2:

That would be nice. I hope it's correct! Good luck!

I hope it not a mistake! Actually when I read the quote, I took it as that would be the total that each person received. Not that that amount would then be split evenly between the 9. But I don't know your business so I'm wishing the best for you!

Since it's a bonus, just sit it aside (don't put it in your check book register) until you find out for sure. Does your boss not have a cell phone you can call him on?

I read it that way too. I hope that is wasn't a mistake!! Let us know what happens.

Is there anyone at the office who knows how much warranty work was done or just the boss?

DH has direct deposit, also. I think something like this happened to him once but I don't remember what we did about it.

I guess I would just spend the $428 until I heard otherwise. If it is a mistake, they will probably just have you write them a check.

I hope the amount you received is correct! :sunny:

I think the message is rather cryptic. I wouldn't go by the wording of it because that could be subject to anyone's interpretation. However, I do think your bonus is the $3000 because that is the amount quoted in the email. Why would they show you a high amount if it's meant to be divided? I still wouldn't bank on it though until you know for sure.

Jumping in late here, this is a dept I run for my company let me see if I can help. If the amount of the check is incorrect (which from the email excert I would take to be the amount is correct) the way a company would get back the money is 1 of 2 ways. the 1 the could actually reverse the transaction. This is more difficult and time comsuming. When you signed up for direct deposit you also signed a form that they could withdraw from your acount as well. We have done this on occasion, usually only if an employee have LEFT the company and for some reason owes us money. The second way would be, like mentioned before to either reduce your total paycheck or a portion of your paycheck until the entire amount has been paid back. I would think though that your company would not make such a substantial mistake in payroll numbers with out double checking them. I hope things turn out well!

That is how I read it also. I hope that I am right and you get a nice big bonus.

I take it as that is the amount you were supposed to get. I wouldn't spend it yet but do think the supervisor is wrong.

Well, the supervisor got in touch with our manager and the manager said it's definitely a mistake. However, we called the lady from payroll and she says that's the amount that the DM stated and that it's correct. We now have to wait until Monday to hear from the DM who's on vacation this week. Although I would love to say I got the $3000 bonus, my gut tells me that it's the lesser amount. Just because that's the way things work around this company.

In this day and age of technology, why doesn't call the boss and ask him. He is at a work sponsored event, therefore, is probably still on the clock. I would be calling his/her cell, emailing like crazy. I know where I work, vacation days, sick days or whatever we are always still in contact. I would get the DM on the phone w/ corporate and sort this out immediately.

I must be the only one that interpreted it as the $3000 being divided by 9 people.
