I found someone that will rent me their time share next year at Bonnett Creek.
He has asked for 1/3 now and then the remaining 2/3 thirty days prior to arrival. How can I verify he is a legitimate TS owner. Should I contact Bonnett Creek (Wyndam) first ?
I have never rented a TS and want to make sure I don't get ripped off.
Thks:scared1:

Ask for a copy of the reservation in his/her name. Ask for one in your name after you pay the 1/3.

At the end of the day, though, this requires a certain amount of trust---the owner continues to control the reservation even after it is put in your name, and can cancel it (and get his/her points back) up to 15 days before check-in.

I am renting in Jan 09 and already have the reservation. I picked two names that came from reccomendations on this board. I then called the hotel directly and asked for the person that does the reservations there. She knew both of the men and said they had good reputations.

I also needed to put down at 1/3 deposit, however, he did not even ask for anything until he provided me a reservation with my name on it.

One thing I found is that many owners who rent will reserve you well in advance, however, they try to re-book you when you are less than 60 days out because they use fewer points that way. For example. They will quote you your rates but 60 days before you go, they try to re-book so they are charged lower points. Brian, I don't know if you can expand on this. At first it made me nervous but now it make sense. They don't cancel the original rezzie until they can confirm that they have re-booked.

If you want to pm me I can tell you the two guys I checked out. They were both good but one gave a discount if he can re-book you within 60 days. For example, I am paying $130 for a one bedroom in Jan. If he can rebook me within the 60 days, it will drop to $100 a night or If possible, he can upgrade me to to a two bedroom for $120 per night.

It is a great deal!

It does require a certain amount of trust. As an owner who rents owned time, I've been burned by people claiming they were certain of their dates and interest, followed by late cancellations that caused my points to be returned to me, very late in my use year. Then I'm stuck with points that I can't use before they expire, other than depositing with RCI. Didn't need that. So it goes both ways - both sides need to take some of the risk and trust. :thumbsup2

Owners that are VIP members can get a 25% points discount if they reserve a unit within 60 days of check-in. If there is availibility, the owner will cancel their current reservation and then re-book a new one. Sometimes, the new unit may have a less desireable view, such as a "parking lot" view as opposed to a better view like "lake view" or "Epcot fireworks" view. I "sacrificed" a lakeview unit, but was able to get a "fireworks" view from the newest building. And with the 25% points I saved, I was able to add 3-nights with a "lake" view unit.

In addition, VIP owners can also get a unit-size upgrade within 30-days of check-in. This would probably be harder to get at Bonnet Creek.
