My DD wants to know if you can actually dig at the DigSite at AK? I told her I thought it was just like a playground. :Pinkbounc

Yes, dig for bones... 'they are stuck though

This is really fun for little kids! The bones are under the sand (fixed, so you cannot pick them up only un-cover them). The sand is clean little rocks (well not dirty like actual beach sand!) and fun to dig in. You aren't allowed to take off your shoes in the sand pit, so you have to take them off when you are done to shake out the sand. The play area adjacent to the sand pit has lots of climbing for all ages.

My kids love to play here. One year there were little plastic dinos buried in the sand, but we haven't seen them again in a copy of years. Anyone know what happened? All I can think of is two little kids fighting over a dinosaur
... pirate:
then the parents get involved and start a brawl- rolling around in the sand as other parents grab up their kids and run for the exit- so they had to discontinue it!!!

I'm thankful dd has not yet discovered the digging area, but she does love to play on all equipment and toys. She has a great time and it breaks the day up nicely, giving all us a break fromt he hustle and bustle of a Disney day.

To get to the mammoth dig area you have to head to the ramp/stairs to the left as you enter the boneyard. You actually cross over the bridge through the brontosaurus skeleton; the Oldengate Bridge.

It certainly is the best "sand" ever - I really wish I could buy it for our home sand box! Doesn't stick!

It was nearly impossible to drag my 8 yr old away from the dig site, especially the digging part! If you do go there, plan to spend a lot of time...

Yes, you can dig. It's great for the kids. Like the previous poster, we had to almost drag our granddaughter away from there. I would suggest that you make this your last thing you do in the Boneyard. The adults can sit on the rocks to the side and rest after running through the "playground" part. We also made this the last thing we did for the entire day. We could use the excuse "but honey, the park is going to close and we don't want to be here all night!". OK, she was five at the time so she fell for it.

My son loved it to (see him digging and beeing fimled in the above picture topic 2)... I think he would have stayed all day... He was among the first that day and we stayed for well over an hour and when we did leave had to promise to come back later for some more digging.

The one time we took DS, he was 7 and he had a blast digging in the sand. (The next trip we went when he was 11 and it just didn't interest him anymore.) I agree with another poster...the sand there is awesome...it's not the fine stuff, but more like crumbles...so it was a bit easier to clean up. It's a great area that is pretty shaded and we just stood kind of above the dig site on the ramp/walkway so we could keep an eye on DS as he moved from spot to spot while digging. It was a nice rest for us, even though we were standing and a good place to enjoy a cold drink while waiting. I think our DS could have stayed there for hours, but was okay when we told him it was enough...think we let him dig for about a half hour.
