Hi. Just wanted some opinions. My dd's high school recieved a bomb threat for 2 specific days in the upcoming weeks. I'm not too worried about it but I told dd that she could stay home on those days if she is nervous. She hasn't missed any days this year so I'm ok with her missing. Anyway, I don't really know what I'm asking...lol..just wondering what other parents would do:confused3 Do you think it's ok to let her decide whether or not she goes?

I ran into this same situation last year or the year before at my DD's old school. A lot of parent's kept their kids home. I left it up to DD and she chose to attend. There was such a police presence and awareness that day I don't know how anyone could have gotten a bomb in the place if they tried.

Well, of course it is always better safe then sorry but the vast majority of the time the school bomb threat is some student trying to get out of class. We had a couple when I was in school and I know they happen about once a year still because a friend of mine teaches there.

If someone was actually trying to blow up a building I doubt they would call ahead of time and warn anyone, it kind of defeats the purpose of killing people if that is their actual motivation.

Long Island must be busy. We had a bomb threat made last week for our High School. They ended up tracing it back to the kid and he was arrested. It's testing time here and it isn't unusual for threats to be made to try and close school down for a day. The Principal made a central district call to inform the parents. I sent my son to school. He said many stayed home that day.

The police were at the entrance and all backpacks and lockers were gone through for a few days.

In high school, I would probably let my son decide, but I would worry all day long. :scared:

I'd do the same as you...leave it up to her not to go if she's really nervous.

We had 3 last year over a few week period, but without warning, so we didn't have the issue or choice to send DS or not, although I was on edge about what was going on...when the next one would be, if something actually would happen. They did catch the kid and he was expelled; has lots of problems at home, so I hope he also gets help along with facing criminal charges.

I agree. We had multiple bomb threats every year (almost all the day of, only one in advance). I don't know why kids continued to do it because in my school system they always caught who did it, they had to pay thousands of dollars in fines, and most often got expelled.

The one in advance was the most scary as it was right after Columbine happened and some kid wrote in all of the bathroom stalls that everyone was going to die on such and such day and that whoever was left was going to be blown up. A lot of kids didn't show up that day but most did. They had dozens of cops and bomb dogs (we had a 1,000 person high school) and everyone had to go through a very intense metal detector/search process.

We got the district phone call last night. My daughter said they all had to clean out their lockers on Friday and I know that they will be checking bags and have cops there.

I told my dd the same thing that Firedancer said. If someone's goal was to hurt people then they wouldn't give a warning. I just feel like if she's nervous I should let her stay home. I bet she'll end up going though, she says making up the work is not worth it. My DH is a cop and he's not the least bit concerned so I'm trying not to worry too much. I remember bomb threats when I was in high school except that was so long ago, they were in morse code:lmao:

Nah, I wouldn't make her go. Not worth it. I'm sure a ton of kids will be out, and she probably won't miss much.

I went to high school on Long Island and one week my sophomore year we had a bomb scare every day for a week. In FEBRUARY! We were on the football field for quite a long time, freezing our butts off. It was just some kid trying to be 'funny' and not anything serious. We had bomb sniffing dogs at the main entrance for awhile after though. They happen, and most of the time are just kids trying to get out of class or a test. If you don't mind mentioning, which high school was it?

I teach highschool, and this happens somewhere in our district every year. We ALWAYS have the school completely swept anytime one is called in and have police on campus. What the kids doing this want to do is have your kids stay home. They are looking to disrupt the normal function of the school.

My kid? I'd keep her home... I"m sure she wouldn't object :cutie:

We've had that happen many times at both our hs and ms. Those are actually the safest days to be in school, as the police presence was all over. No one could have done anything that day even if they intended to.

Anyone who is serious won't advertise in advance.

Was that WB high school?? We had them every day for a week and then a few scattered for a month!

The district where I grew up gets them so often every year they have to threaten to go into summer if it happens againn, but they call it in the day of, focing an evacuation. The only time anything happened in advance was the first anniversary of Columbine. People kept saying somebody was going to upstage Columbine. My mom did keep me home, but that was because I had two jocks threaten me specifically and the administration refused to punish them (even though two teachers and a counselor backed me up.) Honestly, I'm not sure that going would have been worth it even if I hadn't been threatened. We were in lockdown the day before and everyone was so nervous they couldn't pay attention. I heard it was worse the next day and not much got done.

Our daughters goes to the same HS - my dd is in 9th grade. I got the call last night too (small world isn't it?) I still haven't decided fully on whether she is going or not. I have spoken to a few mothers and we are unsure. She said most of her friends are staying home. I also told her if someone was to do something, they would do it without warning. They did have a bomb threat last month remember? She did leave 1/2 through school b/c she was really nervous and couldn't concentrate in class.

:thumbsup2 That's my thinking -- if I were really wanting to harm people, you wouldn't call it in and WARN anyone first. I'm pretty sure any attack that has happened has not had a warning first. I don't seem to recall any at least if there WERE warnings, it was nothing as obvious as "oh, on May 17 at 10:00 AM, we are going to bomb the school" or if they just want to blow up the building with the least amount of casualities would do it a bizarre time like 2 AM on a Sunday.

I know I shouldn't be so casual about it but we have had bomb threats at school since I was in high school. I know a couple years ago when DD was in middle school something like that was at the HS and even kids at the MS were freaked out (why? I have no idea the schools aren't even remotely close to each other). I told my DD -- I will bet you some major test was going to happen and somebody didn't study so wanted to get out of it.

Turns out about a week later, she hears that yes, indeed some very important test was to have taken place the day of the threat.

Hi LOVETHATMOUSE!! It really is a small world. Did you decide if she's going yet? I think mine is going because she has something important to do in a class. She said maybe she'd leave after that but if the school is on lockdown, will they let her??

BTW, did you see that a guy in a dark SUV tried to get a couple of girls last week:scared1: Warn your dd.. the story is on cbsnewsdotcom

Hey! She is going.....she has an essay that they are doing today in Global H, but it's first period. Her lunch is at 10:15 so I told her to call/text me then. I spoke to another mom and she seems to think that it might be someone not wanting to take the AP tests that are being given. They will be in alot of trouble WHEN, not if, they catch them. My dd said they are going to have the bomb sniffing dogs there today too, beside the searches and pat downs.

If school is on lockdown, I think only a parent can sign them out - at least it was that way went she was in School #5 (it happened twice). Yes, I heard about the 2 girls!!! Scary isn't it? A few years back, a man in a car tried to get 3 of her friends near Bonbinos, thank goodness they were not hurt/taken.

She went too!! Also had that essay. I told her to text me at lunch(9:30:eek:) so hopefully she'll have some info for me.

BTW We must live really close to one another:thumbsup2
