Boma has only a couple of items that are a little spicy like hot pepper spicy, but nothing fiery hot. There are all kinds of different spices in the food. It's Mediterranean/North African-type flavors.
I don't know what you ate, but I absolutely did not taste cinnamon or cloves in the majority of the dishes I tried, and I had a little bit of everything that was meatless. It seemed like there was a great variety of flavors as a matter of fact. Since I've read reviews like yours before we went, I asked my husband (meat-eater) if he tasted the same spice in everything, and he said he didn't. And I didn't find the food to be bland. I guess if I were expecting hot spicy food like at our local Ethiopian restaurant, I might have been disappointed.
