We have a 10 day trip coming up in August. We have never tried any of the restaurants in AKL. We are not very adventurous eaters but would love to go there. Is there any foods in Sanaa or Boma that aren't very ethnic? I saw some people talk about "butter chicken" in Sanaa. Is that more plain? I would really like to go to Sanaa since the view looks awesome.

Boma has plenty of "plain" foods on the buffet. If I remember from our last visit, there was prime rib, mac and cheese, and lots of food for the picky eaters in our group.

Sanaa is our favorite non-signature restaurant and while they do have some more Americanized menu items (like steak and tandoori chicken) it is largely Indian based. Butter chicken for example does have butter in it, but also yogurt and lots of Indian spices.

We haven't done Boma but as the other poster said they have some more typical buffet items. If you are concerned your best bet may be to give Boma a whirl so you can try some unique items but if you don't care for them still gave lots more available to you

We love Boma and a few members of our group have food allergies and I do not like spicy things. They have a carving station and salads as well as a nice mix of soups and other entrees both regular stuff and some ethnic and of course the great desserts. We have dinner there every trip and make an early ADR before it gets crowded. You can go out to the savannahs before or after the meal. We also like breakfast there.

While Sanaa is a more Americanized menu if you've never had Indian food it's still a bit out there. Alternatively, before we brought my dad to Sanaa I gave him "homework" to try some Indian food first to see if he liked it! He tried frozen meals at the grocery store and, liking those, moved up to a weekend Indian buffet lunch at a local restaurant. Since he liked those we knew he'd like Sanaa. The views especially for lunch are pretty awesome at Sanaa so if that's what you really want I'd suggest taking a test run like he did. (Make sure you request a window table though!).

On the other hand if you want to just wing it I'd say Boma. The buffet has a lot of items that are much more familiar so if you don't like the more spiced dishes you'll still have a great dinner. Between the two I would say Sanaa probably is the more adventerous but that might just depend on the particular night at Boma.

(PS- if you google butter chicken you'll see it comes in a rich spiced sauce. My dad loved it but it is one of the more authentic foods on the menu even though it sounds less lol).

I'd also make mention that Boma (albeit good with "plain food" as well) is a buffet. So if your family are not big eaters, there may not be value in attending a buffet.

Butter chicken is anything but plain, and is cooked in a highly seasoned sauce. Really, the only "plain" foods on the menu are the steak and the tandoori chicken. We love Sanaa, but in your case, stick with the safer food offerings at Boma. You can still see the animals before or after your meal at the outside observation area behind the resort.
