'The Bold and the Beautiful' exclusive: Kathryn Joosten to tell her cancer survival story in soap's 6000th episode
by Lynette Rice

Kathryn Joosten (Karen McCluskey on Desperate Housewives) will guest star on The Bold and the Beautiful, EW has learned exclusively. The actress will play herself in a story arc involving Nick Marone (Jack Wagner) and Stephanie Forrester (Susan Flannery) that centers on lung cancer. In the episode, Stephanie befriends real-life lung cancer patients and survivors and meets them one-by-one in her home to hear their stories of diagnosis, treatment and hope. Joosten, a two-time cancer survivor, is among the visitors in the drama’s 6000th episode.

The episode tapes Dec. 17 and will air on Feb. 7. Joosten reportedly gave up her 45-year smoking habit in 2001 after she was diagnosed with lung cancer. Eight years later, she was diagnosed again but underwent surgery. She was declared cancer-free earlier this year.

Ironically, the daytime sudser has long been tied to Desperate Housewives and the character of Karen, though that’s not how it secured Joosten for the role. The Bold and the Beautiful’s Alley Mills (Pam Douglas) is married to Orson Bean, who plays Karen’s husband on Housewives.

When B&B rings in 2011, the peal of wedding bells—and some unexpected engagements—won't be far behind.

Trouble With A Capital "T"
As she gets reacquainted with ex-hubby Rick, "Amber will be taking her mother's advice, which is never good," says executive producer/headwriter Bradley Bell. "We all want to trust our mothers... but Tawny's not full of the best wisdom."

Taylor's Crusade Continues
"Taylor's the only one ringing the alarm bells about Brooke and Thomas," Bell explains. "Stephanie is torn, because she believes that Brooke has really changed her ways. She just cannot see her crossing the line with Ridge's son." So, as Taylor continues playing protective mama bear, all alone, her and "Whip's marriage is going to be put to the test." And what about Thomas? Notes Bell: "Brooke has seemingly charmed all the [Forrester] men. Could she go one more generation?"

Jackie Gets Creative
Without a suitable head designer to keep her company afloat, Jackie puts pencil to sketchpad. "We'll see if she can be the designer that Jackie M is looking for now that Bridget has departed," says Bell.

A New Mrs. Marone?
If Aggie has her druthers, she'll be calling Jackie 'Mom' before too long. "I think Aggie's hoping for more of a commitment out of Nick," shares Bell. "We'll see if that happens in 2011."

Battle Of The Blondes
Oliver or Liam? Liam or Oliver? Just when Hope thinks she's settled on the right suitor, she'll find herself in more of a quandary than ever thanks to continuing interference from her nemesis, Amber. "We can really look forward to them becoming even greater rivals," says Bell.

A New Venture For Dayzee
Having bonded over their mission to help others in need, Dayzee and Stephanie go into business, says Bell. "They're going to become partners." And Dayzee will find love with Marcus.

I'm reading that she gets pregnant with Oliver's baby and passes it off as Liam's.

I'm hearing she drugs Liam, he thinks he had sex with her but he really didn't. He wakes up next to her one morning. Basically its the EXACT same thing Phyllis to Danny Romaloti.

BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL: Tip Vs Bridge! Look for the feud between these two couples to heat up in the coming weeks as Taylor and Brooke continue to battle over Thomas and Whip maintains his distrust and dislike of Ridge. Taylor will start noticing just what a jerk Ridge really is about the entire line and perhaps this is Brad's way of breaking any possible ties with Tridge.....Meanwhile, Ridge's distrust starts to grow some as Brooke and Thomas seem to get closer and closer. Will they cross the line? I am hearing we will all be surprised by the outcome of this particular storyline that is gong to crest in January.....Amber and Brooke's paths will cross very soon as Amber keeps a backup plan on the burner by batting a few eyes at Rick who is still smitten slightly with her.....Steffy's coming back soon, and she comes back with romance in the air.

Cancer survivor Kathryn Joosten is taking her real-life drama to a daytime soap. The veteran actress, a two-time Emmy winner as feisty Karen McCluskey on Desperate Housewives, will appear as herself on the 6000th episode of The Bold and the Beautiful (airing February 7). The show's matriarch Stephanie Forrester (Susan Flannery) is currently battling lung cancer, which Joosten has kicked twice — in 2001 and 2009. The anniversary plot finds Stephanie going online to try to form a lung-cancer support group. Joosten decides to join up, as do several other real-life lung-cancer survivors who will also appear in the episode. TV Guide Magazine spoke with Joosten about her very Bold guest stint.

TV Guide Magazine: Sight unseen, this sounds like great and valuable TV! Talk about the decision to play yourself, rather than playing a character who has cancer.
Joosten: I don't think it would have been as successful if I'd played somebody else. I've been very open about my experiences with lung cancer — no big secret there — and the show is set in Los Angeles, so it made sense to do it this way. It was easy playing myself because I'm so familiar with the subject matter and so passionate about lung-cancer advocacy. Susan and I have some great scenes together, discussing the disease very realistically. We get to talking about the fear of death and how it feels when you wake up in the morning and think, "I may die from this." We talked about so many things — the depression and the anxiety and the importance of getting into therapy. It got a little heavy at times, and I'm sure they're not going to use all of it, but it's still an incredible opportunity to talk about stuff you don't hear on TV.

TV Guide Magazine: Didn't your Desperate Housewives character get cancer?
Joosten: We did one little bit of it where Karen announced she had lung cancer. Then, by the next episode, she'd already had it treated and was out of the hospital.

TV Guide Magazine: That's often the way the daytime soaps handle this stuff — now you see it, now you don't. But B&B has really proven its commitment to following Stephanie's story.

Joosten: There's a real stigma attached to all this. Lung cancer today is thought of like AIDS was in the '80s — it's considered the disease you gave yourself. Basically the public is saying, "You did it to yourself. You're not gonna live. So what do you want us to do about it?" People only got serious about AIDS when it shifted to the heterosexual population. But B&B is really getting the truth out there — they're actually listening to what cancer patients have to say — and that's thrilling. And this is a very successful soap around the world so the potential here is huge.

TV Guide Magazine: How did you link up with the show?
Joosten: [Executive producer] Brad Bell called me because he was having trouble finding stage IV lung cancer survivors in L.A. — he couldn't find a support group! And it's true. There isn't one! When I was being treated at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in L.A., they had a support group that met once a month for stage I cancer patients only. That was it.

TV Guide Magazine: Wow. And that's L.A., where you'd think everything's available. I imagine the situation is even worse out in real America.
Joosten: It is, and if you want to form your own group you can't just call a hospital and say, "Give me the names of your cancer patients." That's why Stephanie uses the internet.

TV Guide Magazine: What did you do when you needed support?
Joosten: I got myself a therapist who had a lot of experience with people with cancer, and had studied with Kubler-Ross. That was enormously helpful to me. I'm a big fan of therapy.

TV Guide Magazine: What kind of insight do you bring to Stephanie? Does this mean we'll see you on B&B on a recurring basis?
Joosten: I do agree to join the group, though I'm really not sure what that means as far as [future appearances]. I would love to go back. I do tell Stephanie that somewhere along the line she's going to need to have a professional run the group because, frankly, in the course of events some members are going to die and we'll all have to deal with that. That reality is not easy for group members to face.

TV Guide Magazine: Jack Wagner's character, Nick, is also part of this. How does he fit in?
Joosten: Nick has a spot on his lung — he thinks it's scar tissue and I tell him he's in denial. When I had cancer the second time, my doctor saw something on my lung and said it was probably a scar but checked it anyway, and it's a good thing. I tell Nick he needs to get himself tested. He's in total denial, you know? That's why this is all so phenomenal — we got to have real, plain-talking open conversations. Off-camera, too! I was talking to one of the cancer patients who's going to be on the show. She was diagnosed with stage IV but wasn't taking antidepressants. She said, "I'm going to just tough it through." I said, "Why on earth would you do that?"

TV Guide Magazine: Again, the denial.
Joosten: Exactly! And listen to this! One of the guys on the B&B tech crew told me that six of his relatives have died from lung cancer. I said, "Really? When did you last have your chest X-rayed?" Well, he's never been X-rayed! So here's someone working on a show that's getting out the message and he's hearing it but still not doing anything about it. Another lady at the show told me her doctor said she didn't need a chest X-ray because she'd never smoked. It's crazy. The largest number of new cancers happen to women between 40 and 65. It's rampant, and the numbers are climbing. That why I hope there will be a whole lot of PR done on this B&B episode. Hey, can I ask you something?

TV Guide Magazine: Of course.
Joosten: Because I didn't have the guts to ask this when I was at the show. What are they going to do with Stephanie? You can live with stage IV for two or three years, but not a whole lot longer.

TV Guide Magazine: Well, Flannery has talked about possibly retiring. Maybe this is setting the stage for that. Let's just hope they don't go for that old soap-opera chestnut — the miracle cure! That would be a cheat.
Joosten: If they do, I will be all over them!

TV Guide Magazine: Then again, it's a soap so they can always play with time. They can slow it down. Hell, you're from Wisteria Lane. You guys zipped ahead five years! By the way, aren't you safe on Housewives anyway? I once interviewed Marc Cherry and he told me he'd promised you that he'll never kill off your character. True?
Joosten: Absolutely. I was killed off on The West Wing, and then again on Scrubs I even got killed off on General Hospital. I said to Marc, "I will do your show but don't kill me!" And he made me that promise. He's a man of his word. [Laughs] And I bet he's sorry now!

Ellen Greene Soaps Up for a Gig on The Young and the Restless
And baby makes three? That terrific character actress Ellen Greene of Little Shop of Horrors and Pushing Daisies fame joins The Young and the Restless for a five-episode stint starting January 7. Longtime fans of the soap will get a kick out of this: Greene will play Primrose DeVille, who is the niece of black market baby racketeer Rose DeVille, a notorious character played back in the '80s by the late, great Darlene Conley. Primrose will connect with Billy Abbott (Billy Miller) soon after he and wife Victoria (Amelia Heinle) get word from the doc that it'll be near impossible for them to conceive children. Y&R has Greene under gag order about plot details but, as you can see in the photo, Primrose does hand Billy a newborn. And Daisy (Yvonne Zima) gives birth to her baby this week and abandons it in a church. Are the bambinos one and the same? We'll leave it up to you to connect the dots. In the meantime, here's what Greene had to say to TV Guide Magazine about her trip to Genoa City!

TV Guide Magazine: What a cool way to kick off 2011! How did Ellen Greene — famous for her quirky choices — land on Y&R?Greene: Here's what happened: A long time ago when I was very young I played a nurse on one of the New York soaps — I can't even remember which one — and it just terrified me! The whole experience! I just hated it! [Laughs] So I swore off soaps but then, a few years later — I think it was after Little Shop — I was offered a part that actually appealed to me. It was this sexy, rock 'n' roller chick on All My Children, just two days work but I had a great director I just loved and still remember to this day — so I show up at Y&R all these years later and it's the exact same director, Conal O'Brien! I mean, what are the chances with all the directors in the world? At first I didn't want to do the role, but in Judaism there's a word "bashert" — destiny. I took it as a sign that I was in the place I was supposed to be at the right time and definitely in tune with the universe.

TV Guide Magazine: Why didn't you want the part to begin with?Greene: Because I still had that horrible nurse experience in my head! My agents got the call from Y&R and really liked the role and the whole idea. They said, "Ellen, you should do this." But I was too afraid. Soaps move so fast and I'm a snob. I like to really prepare my scenes and have time with the director, so I tried to turn it down. I even said, "Will you hate me if I say no?" I've always had trouble saying no. When I was little I had to write down what I wanted to be when I grew up and I wrote, "I want to be an actress-singer-dancer because you can be a rich fairy princess and tell someone off." Well, I still can't tell anyone off!

TV Guide Magazine: So what changed your mind about playing Primrose?Greene: I read the script. It was so good I was shocked. I just had to do it. I can only tell you this much: Primrose will bring happiness into Billy's life. Anything more and they will have to annihilate me. That Billy Miller is a very good actor, by the way. So much fun to work with, and such a dear. In fact, every single person at Y&R was kind to me.

TV Guide Magazine: Who wouldn't be kind to Ellen Greene? You're Audrey for crying out loud! Greene: Oh, a lot of times you go into a show where the cast has worked together for a long time and they can be very cliquish. I like kindness. Who doesn't? Life is definitely too short for self-centered, abusive people. I would play those characters but I don't want to work with them.

TV Guide Magazine: You started out in cabaret and Broadway musicals. Now you're all about TV. Will you get back to singing?Greene: I do miss the saloons. I grew up watching old black and white movies where Marlene Dietrich or Jean Harlow would go walking down some cobblestone street in ripped stockings and head into some smoky boite and sing for a pathetic living. That's so what I wanted to be. Maybe one of these days I'll start singing again. I recently lost my mom and, when my heart gets heavy, singing is the one thing I can't do. But this is interesting — years and years and years ago I made an album with Joel Dorn who produced "Killing Me Softly" for Roberta Flack and Bette Midler's first album, The Divine Miss M, and it was never released. Now, like, 30 years later, it's finally being released this year. It's called All the Lives of Me, which is a Peter Allen song I always used to close my act with. It's kind of wild and very esoteric — one of those one-of-a-kind albums you put on your shelf and only you own. [Laughs] It's definitely not commercial.

TV Guide Magazine: That's good, because if Ellen Greene goes commercial on us, it's the end of civilization as we know it. You're all about the oddball jobs.Greene: I know! I almost turned down Pushing Daisies because I was also offered a role on Heroes playing Sylar's mother. As it turned out, I was able to shoot both at the same time, but I was all set to choose the drama because I love that sort of thing. A serial killer's mom!

TV Guide Magazine: People still miss Pushing Daisies. Big time.Greene: So do I! I always cook for [Daisies creator] Bryan Fuller on Thanksgiving and Christmas. I just loved that show. The art direction! The costumes! You should have seen the fitting room. It was wild. I felt like a drag queen trying on everything and anything — hats, bags, gloves, suits — in wild combinations. It was so much fun. I wish they'd let it come back on TV every year like Miracle on 34th Street. Pushing Daisies, a Christmas tradition. [Laughs] I can see it, can't you?
