Boiling hot dogs... Gross or not gross?

I hosted a Super Bowl party a couple years ago and I made a hot dog buffet. Boiled them first then put them in a steamer tray to serve. Had a warming pot filled with coney sauce and set out chopped onions, relish, shredded cheese and a selection of condiments. Went over well!

Also, if I were to boil hot-dogs, OMG, please do not over-cook them and boil them to death! bring them to a boil-simmer and then take them off the burner. Of course, keeping warm until served is okay.

And, here is one that I think the Southern folks here will really get.
Bologna, of course, is like sliced off of a huge hotdog.
Yes, one can eat cold bologna sandwiches.
But, here, fried (skillet browned) bologna is not unheard of.
Ever had fried bologna on a biscuit!!!
My son as actually picked up Oscar Meyer bologna at the store, so he could throw a couple of pieces in a hot skillet, and have fried bologna for breakfast. :faint:

Had a fried bologna sandwich last weekend for lunch! I normally do not touch the stuff and hate it cold but dh had some leftover from his week in the truck and I just got a craving for fried bologna. I swear they make if different now though than when I was a kid. It doesn't char and bubble up in the middle like it used to!

As for hot dogs. Either grilled or heated up in a small amount of water with some butter (sort of a steamed/fried thing going on there).

If you're going to go the crockpot route, throw in a beer instead of water...you get beer dogs, and they're great.

I 100% prefer grilled hotdogs, I would eat a boiled hot dog if there was nothing else there to eat though.

Wow, it looks like a pretty even split boiled vs. grilled.

Ugh, I need to figure out my menu. Here's the deal... We were not going to host a party this year. We host every party all year for every occasion. Easter, Halloween, 4th of July... Seriously every holiday other than Christmas we host a party. And we usually do it up with a ton of good food, not hot dogs. We spend a boatload of money every time and I just wasn't feeling it this time.

So I told my friends let's just do desserts and my husband will tend bar for the adults. He makes a great frozen Margarita. But then I felt guilty because we always serve a big spread.

So I moved to at least having hot dogs and a big crockpot of queso with all the fixings. I'm just tired, we have a lot going on this summer behind the scenes that I haven't shared with my friends. Not really in the party mood.

So why don't you just keep it as a "Dessert Party"? That sounds fun! Have everyone over for drinks & dessert - but start your get together after the dinner hour. Maybe 7ish or 8ish?

Instead of doing hot dogs, you could do a big bowl of fresh fruit as an option to the other desserts. Maybe some homemade ice cream! (We always do homemade ice cream on the 4th.) An ice cream sundae bar would be wonderful!

I'm not even sure I would do the queso - just keep everything within the "drinks & dessert" theme.

Regarding the hot dogs, growing up, we always had them boiled except if we were also grilling hamburgers. I prefer grilled. If I'm fixing hot dogs for the kids for a quick lunch, I broil them in the oven.

It looks like I'm the oddball here who likes them both ways. Make it easy for yourself.

Stick 'em in the oven~! That's how I fix mine most of the time. You can cook them about 8-10 min, turning them over once so you get a little char on two sides. If you need to keep them hot, just put them in aluminum foil so they will remain moist and leave them on top of the stove, or you can turn off the oven and put your package in there.

If you really want to get fancy, cut some hot dogs down the middle but not all the way through. Put a small, rectangular piece of cheese in the cut and bake in the oven about 8 minutes. My kids think these are da bomb :thumbsup2

Go to BJ's, buy a couple boxes of frozen pigs in a blanket, pop them in the oven and that is that.

You don't owe anyone anything no matter what you usually do. If this year you want to host a party with just desserts and some munchies, do it. If they are close enough to you they'll know something is going on and understand. If they have a problem, leave them off the guest list next year :lmao:

I like your dessert party idea. If you feel bad about not having some "real food" then your idea of dogs is great - stick some in a crock pot & let people know they're there if they want them.

As for hot dogs...I like them prepared any way. I love that the ones that have said that they are surprised at how many boil hot dogs. If you look at their locations, most (not all) live in locations that don't live under a mountain of snow 6-7 months of the year. Many of us do not have grilling capabilities year round due to weather.

Well, after reading your update, I would ditch the dogs! Keep it simple, a dessert party is an awesome idea! I would love that.

If you feel the need to offer something other than dessert, I would just put out some fruit, cheese & crackers, pepperoni, olives etc. That way folks that don't want dessert can pick at that.

If I am feeding hotdogs to my kids they usually go in the microwave, however my kids do like them cold straight out of the fridge. But if I am feeding adults they always go on the grill. The crockpot idea does sound intriguing though. ::yes::

We always throw a huge 4th of July party every year since the city fireworks are shot off in our backyard pretty much. This is our 5th year doing it and every year it gets bigger and bigger and the cost keeps going higher and higher. We enjoy it though and look forward to it every year and I enjoy cooking a big spread.

I prefer grilled, but dh prefers boiled, so we usually boil them (he eats way more of them than I do in a sitting so.....).

I agree with the "just keeping it to drinks and dessert" theme though. :goodvibes

I remember having hot dogs that were fried and put on toasted buns. Oh those were so good. But nothing wrong with boiled hot dogs either.

Boiled! Definitely boiled. And they have to be Sabretts.

Oh and they are lovingly :rolleyes1 referred to as Dirty Water Dogs here in NYC! That's how you get them most of the time from the hot dog vendors on the street, although some do grill them.

My DD recently cooked hot dogs in the crock pot, she didn't even put any water in. I admit I was skeptical at first but they were really good. Just put them in the crock pot and forget about them until you're ready to serve them. Very easy and tasty too.

:thumbsup2 I've never stood them up before. I do this for church for kids' events all the time.

I'd prefer grilled, steamed or microwaved before boiled, but I like them about any way you can do them. If I'm at somebody else's party and they're feeding me, I'll just be thankful for the food they're providing. No big deal.

Hey, OP, don't let this 'debate' stress you out more.
Serve up some dogs, the way YOU want to fix them.
They are easy....
No reason not too.

The crock-pot thing sounds good, and soooo easy.
If you do heat them in boiling water... just don't actually 'boil' them to death!!!! :goodvibes
