I'm opposed to the use of these body scanners. :sad2: What say you?

Fort Lauderdale airport starts using body-scanning machines

FORT LAUDERDALE

By using low-level radiation, the new body-scanner machines that went online at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Wednesday essentially capture travelers in the buff.

But the pictures aren't exactly Playboy centerfold quality.

Rather, they're blurred, much like a chalk etching. While Transportation Security Administration officers will be able to tell whether a person is flabby or in shape, they won't be able to see faces or private parts with any detail.

But they will be able to immediately see whether someone is trying to hide a weapon or an explosive substance under his or her clothing — and that's the whole point, said Tim Lewis, TSA federal security director at the Fort Lauderdale airport.

"You, me, your family and your friends will be much safer now," he said. "Having 99.999 percent security effectiveness is not good enough. We have to do better than that."

As of Wednesday, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International became the 27th airport in the nation and the fourth in the state to start using the advanced-imaging machines, which cost up to $170,000 each.

Two Rapiscan Secure 1000 machines were installed at Concourse E in Terminal 3. Several more will be placed "strategically" around the airport over the next month, TSA officials said.

In all, the TSA has purchased 490 body scanners and plans to put them in airports around the nation this year. The machines already are used at Miami International Airport and eventually may be installed at Palm Beach International Airport.

Because each passenger spends about 10 seconds in the machine, the scanners do not slow the security process, an important factor as the bustling summer travel season approaches, Lewis said.

Here's what passengers can expect as they go through a scanner at the Fort Lauderdale airport:

Each machine is comprised of two big blue boxes — each similar in size and shape to a coin-operated photo booth — side by side.

Before stepping into the machine, passengers are asked to take off shoes, jewelry, belts and jackets. They are asked not to carry wallets or any other objects, as the machines detect both metallic and non-metallic substances.

Officials suggest all these items be placed inside carry-on bags, which are run through an X-ray machine and examined separately.

"Divest everything off your body," said John Lenihan, TSA acting deputy assistant administrator for security operations. "That's an important new change for passengers."

Passengers will be asked to stand between the two boxes, facing one of them. They will be instructed to raise their arms. A five-second shot of low-level radiation will capture an image of the passenger and send it to an officer monitoring a screen in a separate room.

Lewis noted the radiation is extremely minimal.

"It's absolutely safe for everyone, and that includes my pregnant daughter and my grandchildren," he said.

To emphasize the point, he said it would take 5,000 trips through the machine to amass the same amount of radiation as in a single chest X-ray.

If a suspicious item is spotted, the passenger will get a secondary screening, including possibly a pat-down.

The scanners are used for primary screening. If passengers are uncomfortable going through a machine, they have the option of declining. However, in that case they must walk through a metal detector and endure a secondary screening, said TSA spokesman James Fotenos.

"Passengers always have the option of opting out," he said.

Several steps have been taken to protect passenger privacy, Lewis said. The transportation security officers viewing the images sit in a room with opaque windows several yards away from the machines, so they never see the actual passenger. Faces on the images are obscured. And as soon as officers determine a passenger is safe, the images are deleted.

"There is zero ability to save the images on the machines," he said.

Lewis said he is well aware of an incident at Miami International Airport earlier this month, when during a test, a security officer made fun of the size of another officer's genitals after viewing images in a scanner. The offended officer attacked his co-worker with a baton in a parking lot and was charged with aggravated battery.

Any similar lack of "professionalism" in Fort Lauderdale would lead to swift and severe punishment, Lewis said.

Surveys show that most passengers have no objection to the machines. John Pietro of Pompano Beach, a frequent flier and salesman, is one of them.

"If it stops one bad guy, it's a good thing," he said.

His wife, Denise, however, approached the machine apprehensively before flying to Pittsburgh on Wednesday. She didn't like the thought of screeners peeking under her clothing.

"I'll do it," she said. "I don't have anything to hide. But I don't like it."

Tim LeBon, of Baltimore, a CEO for a disaster restoration firm, said he's concerned the images will somehow end up on the Internet, despite TSA's assurances they will be destroyed.

"You can delete an e-mail, but it's always there," he said, prior to a Maryland flight Wednesday.

Tamara Bell, who flew into Fort Lauderdale from Charlotte Wednesday, said she would refuse to go through the body scanner for privacy reasons.

"I think it's going too far," said Bell. "What's next? Are they going to put a chip in you to see if you've done anything illegal?"

I think they're horrible too.

Behind the wheel for me... It's a beautiful way to see the country. I'm not a fan of flying even if i have flown to and from texas several times now. And I'll be flying in just a month again.

popcorn:: I just want to get a good seat for when this takes off.

I have no problem with them. Flying is not a right, we must abide by the rules put in place or don't use that service and I also have ZERO self-esteem problems, or modesty isssues about my body. If naked pics of me ever got "out there", well...enjoy!

I dislike flying in general, but certainly not for this.

I do completely understand that many others do not share my sentiment and my heart does go out to you, particularly if this will prevent you from flying in the future.

They're coming to Pittsburgh too. We are going to Europe this summer and the thought of going through them makes me very upset - however, the alternative is a pat-down, which is even more distasteful. I really won't feel any safer with them!

I don't see it as a self-esteem problem, more a complete invasion of privacy, a violation of my body.

I have no issues with them per say... but I still think it's overkill on nothing. We're so worried about another plane attack, do you really think they'd go the same route again?? We're so prepared for the past, we're not ready for the future.

I prefer driving every where, and I will fly when I have to.

Me too, considering that just back in December there was a 51 page, very heated discussion over the very same thing.

How about some beer and popcorn? Together :lmao:

Oh, and I will reiterate my position from the last thread.

I would much rather be anonymously seen nekkid than have some power-hungry TSA agent putting their hands all over me in person in a search.

Yes they would as evidenced by the wackos that try to put things in their shoes and underwear. :rotfl2:

Seeing me nekkid will be a MUCH more painful experience for the TSA employees than it will be for me.

I have mixed feelings, though. I'm glad for increased safety, but it feels awfully invasive.

I can say for sure that I wouldn't want that job. The body scanner images I've seen online look really creepy to me. I think it would give me nightmares to have to look at them all day.

But the scan would not have found either :confused3.

I have been scanned without my knowledge and next time I will be asked to be patted down. If it's going to uncomfortable for one of us it should be uncomfortable for both of us.

I'd rather go through the scanning machine than have someone pat me down. That's horrible when they do that.

I 110% support using them.
I have nothing to hide..so scan away, i could care less.
If it makes us more safe..go for it.

Agreed....while i love to fly...it certainly isnt a right.
Folks that seem to have an issue with this, i dont think get that.

You are right, they wouldn't have been found, either by pat down or by scan. I was just replying to the post that said that airplanes wouldn't be used again.

I can guarantee you when the TSA agent sees this blubberous body nekked it is going to be WAY more uncomfortable for him than it is for me to stand around perfectly clothed. :lmao:

I really don't care one way of the other. Can they stop some attacks, of course. Will they stop all attacks, of course not.

There is no silver bullet that will make flying completely without risk from attack but even if no one is ever caught trying to bring something on a plane that doesn't mean the scanners have no purpose. Even if just the deterrent is enough to stop one person from trying they are serving their purpose.

Look at it like a Speed Limit. Just having one is enough to stop a lot of people from driving 100 down a side street. Even a street that never has anyone get stopped or get a ticket is safer because there is a speed limit because of it's deterrent nature.

In the end flying is a privilege and not a right. If the scanner is at the airport you are using you can either go through it, request a pat-down (as long as they remain an option), or choose a different mode of transportation.

All true. However, I will probably at the minimum have tears in my eyes as I am subject to it, if not streaming down my face. It will not make me feel safer, only humiliated, and will make me have second thoughts about flying unless I absolutely have to.

WHY?
Only females view females and males view males from what i understand.
I just cant understand the humiliation.
If someone wants to get their kicks from these machines....so beit.
I'll never see them again.

This attitude is frightening to me. It is what people usually say when they express willingness to give up their civil rights. No, flying is not a right, but not having strangers look at naked pictures of me should be.

^^Why would it be better for strange females to look at the pictures? Makes no difference, it is still an invasion.

I wonder if they'll be able to *see" the rather large tube of lip stuff I seem to accidentally on purpose always leave in my jeans pocket? :p

This has nothing to do with civil rights.

I am a huge defender of civil rights, This is not a civil rights argument.

If you do not want to be scanned, then you have plenty of other options to get to your destination; Amtrak, Greyhound, QE2, the highway. Your other options may not be as convenient as flying, but you do have options available to you if you do not want to be scanned or patted down.

IF you choose to fly, then you choose to abide by the requirements of flying. Since you consciously chose to fly, and thus agreed to the requirements of flying, then scanning is not an invasion as this is the choice you made.

Don't want to be scanned, make a different travel choice.

Since it is a choice made by the traveler, there is no erosion of rights.
