Boat Horns

On our last trip to Boardwalk Villas (October 2001) my wife and I noticed that the horns on the Bay Lake Friendship boats had changed. Previously they had been friendly 'ttots', sounding much as you would expect a boar's horn to sound like. They now sounded like truck horns, a much more unpleasant sound. A boat captain later confirmed that they had in fact been changed and they were in fact truck horns.

My wife wants to know if they still have these as our villa next trip (September 2003), like as not will be facing onto the MGM canal, within earshot of the Boardwalk/Swolfin bridge where every boat sounds its horn.

Boat horns add to the 'seaside' atmosphere, truck horns do not!

Where I live, for many years the fire horn atop a building was sounded once at 8 PM every night. Honnnngk! (They discontinued it recently)

I used to avoid walking on the street at that hour as it usually startled me.

Then I was on a tour boat in Pittsburgh PA one summer. (Downtown Pittsburgh is at the fork of two rivers) The pilot sounded the horn which was just above me on the deck. Boy was it loud. I looked up and the horn looked the same as the fire horn back at home.

PittsburghTrivia

Pittsburgh is at the point where 3 Rivers come together. Allegheny, Monongahela, and the Ohio.

They were probably changed as a result of some safety concerns and the ability to "hear" them over a certain distance, with a boat load of noisy passengers and noisy boat motor.
