Now my question - from what I could find, the mugs can be filled at Joe's Coffee cart, and Boardwalk Bakery. Are these convenient to the BWV rooms??? Or would I just be throwing away $22?? Any suggestions???

Here's another view of the mugs for you to think about:
IMHO, the mugs make nice souvenirs, but I would never buy them for the free refills. The places to get them refilled are quite a distance from the rooms and the mugs only hold 12 oz, less if you include ice (I measured). Milk and juice are not part of the program.
All of the DVC rooms have coffeemakers and refrigerators (the studio has an under counter model and the other rooms all have full size refrigerators). I think it is much more convenient to make coffee in the room and also I prefer to bring along (or buy there)my own favorite brand. I don't much care for the coffee most Disney places serve, although I thought Boardwalk Joe's was OK. A case of soda runs between $4 and $5 or (16 or 20 cents per 12 oz can), so I also do not think it is all that good of a deal. At 20 cents a can, you'd have to refill each mug 55 times to break even, if you don't consider the cost of the mug. I suppose if you plan to spend a lot of time at the pool (we don't), refilling the mugs would be convenient. But no way could I drink 55 12 oz mugs of coffee/soda pop in 5 days. I'd be spending way too much time touring the restroom!
Now that said, I did buy some mugs because I wanted a souvenir. We didn't use it much for drinking while at the BWV. Used it maybe twice as we soon got tired of the walk to fill them up and I definitely did not like carrying them around all day. We originally thought it would be nice to have a drink on our way to a park in the morning. Well, it was, but I really, really hated carrying them around for the rest of the day.
If you posted a thread asking for ideas on how to present your very generous Christmas present, I bet you'd get lots of other options to consider.
Whatever you decide, I'm sure your parents will enjoy their stay. What a generous person they raised!
