do young kids seem to enjoy these areas? We will be going in march with an almost 4yo and an 8mo...wondering if we should bother going to these areas...

Don't forget this is YOUR vacation too -- there are stores in DTD that cater to kids more than others.....

we walked from mgm to epcot round the boardwalk with my 2 year old early one morning and although not much was open it was really pretty and nice chill out time. my daughter loved it round there
downtown disney shops are kids dream shops although we made the mistake on going one evening and it was packed. we went again in the daytime and it was much better and she had fun filling a box with pony stuff and mr potato head stuff

My son loves DTD. It's a great place for kids. I would agree with the crowded part though.

We love DTD and have been there countless times, it's best to go there in the morning on the weekdays. We love to stroll and shop and eat there.

The Boardwalk we've visited a couple times and it doesn't do much for us.

I definitely don't think either area is a "must do".

DTD has two must-see toystores, Once Upon a Toy and the Lego Store. (Of course, if you are totally anti-shopping, you wouldn't want to do them.)
Also a major ice cream opportunity at Ghirardelli's, and two themed restaurants that cater to kids (T-Rex and Rainforest). On weekends there are often musical acts playing on the outdoor stage there.

The Boardwalk has a beach (on the YC side) and a serious ice cream shop (Beaches and Cream). They can play on the beach as much as they like (not in the water, though) while you sit in deck chairs and relax. There is also a nice playground near the S/D Pool area. Little kids LOVE riding on the open back seat of the Friendship boats that crisscross the lake between Epcot and the Studios.

DTD is always part of our plans on each and every trip. The last trip in 2005 our DGS was 4 years old. He remembers a few of the stores ... esp the Lego Store and is looking forward to going back to DTD. Remember ... this is Disney's "Shopping Ride" so have a nice talk with your budget. And try the Earl of Sandwich - and buy less than your eyes ask for ... GREAT GRUB!!!

Another fun store to visit in DTD is Goofy's Candy Co. Yummy! (see here). It's fun to watch them make the candy covered pretzel sticks. Also next to Raglan Road is Cookes of Dublin :shamrock: where they make "Doh-Bars" (snickers that are battered and deep fried). We tried one for the first time this last trip. Wow, it was good. Obviously, skip both of these venues if you're on a diet of any kind. :upsidedow

If you go to the Boardwalk, go in the evening. That is when the street entertainers are out. They are kind of hard to describe, but fun to watch. During the day, there are boats you can rent on the Y&B club side & at DTD, including the Sea Raycers (two seater mini boats). The Boardwalk also has surry bikes you can rent. You can read more info about this here.

the boardwalk won't do much for kids during the day, however after dark the street performers come out and the kids love them. very funny and my boys have a great time
