How early do they board the plan before a flight?

How late can you board before take off?

Well, generally, boarding begins 30 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time, and they close the door 5 minutes prior to the departure time.

and if you are not on the plane or have not checked in 10 mins. before departure, you won't get on, they can release your seat to any standbys.

When I was returning from my trip to WDW, they were still doing last call and people were still in random security check, so it varies.

Last chance for boarding varies from one airline to anothe also. I think Delta gives away seats (not just the assignments) to standbys ten minutes before "departure time". Also Delta expects (or used to expect) you to have checked baggage in by 30 minutes before departure time, otherwise you may be bumped then and there with no compensation.

I think United "closes the door" ten minutes before departure.

However on my last WDW trip (Nov. 01) Delta held some flights for people stuck in security lines, my flight out of BOS was held 20 minutes.
