Nope, there is an owner representative appointed by Disney that votes for the members. The only time we'd actually vote would be to withdraw a resort from the DVC System. Which means we'd no longer be DVC owners, but that our resort would be an independent timeshare. Not likely to happen at all, though never say never.

It isn't like stockholders. I doubt that the member representative would ever vote against the rest of the board, at least not at the meeting.

The meetings are pretty much carefully scripted and everything of importance is cut and dried before the meeting ever starts. It is mostly a place to gather info about upcoming changes in the resorts and rules pertaining to DVC. Nice to attend occasionally, but usually there is someone doing a play by play via twitter and usually someone posts a nice summary shortly after the meeting ends.

WebmasterDoc does a nice recap report here on the DIS whenever he attends. I do wish DVC would webcast it, either live or delayed...or tape it and post it on Youtube.

The belief that the first thing members would do, if allowed any control, would be to vote for lower operating costs and dues and thus diminish services performed at the resorts, is likely the reason members are given no control. The official documents (declarations and agreements you get from DVD if a new purchaser from DVD) have convoluted terms concerning members rights to vote but result in your agreement to appoint DVD as the party that can vote for you in the way it wants to vote when electing directors. In one breath the documents declare that the timeshare owners will elect the directors of the associations that manage the resorts, and in the next they declare that you assign DVD your rights to vote in such an election and give it the power to choose on your behalf the directors it wants to elect.

There are usually several hundred members in attendance at the meeting each year and the number has been growing from the early days.

The meeting is usually divided into two meetings - the DVD Board Meeting and the DVC Board Meeting. The DVD meeting typically lasts no more than 10 minutes and the DVC meeting will often last well over an hour since (after the voting components have been completed), comments/questions from members in attendance are invited. There will be reports from the GM for each DVC Resort including what was accomplished over the past year and what they expect to do at the resort for the next year.

There has often been some form of entertainment and previews of Disney movies and DVC Resorts.

DVC Members in attendance do not have any opportunity to vote at the meetings - our vote is made by a representative appointed by Disney.

Members will soon (in the next month) receive notice of the meeting, an opportunity to register to go and the proposed maintenance fees for the coming year for the resort(s) you own. If there are any special motions to be voted on, that will also be noted in the announcement. In 2007, they held a meeting for OKW owners to explain the extension for contracts being offered at that time (lunch was even provided), but that was a rare event and not a usual component at these meetings.

I have attended many meetings over the past 20 years and have found them to be interesting and a glimpse at the "man behind the curtain". If you already have a reservation at WDW during the date of the meeting, it is worthwhile attending. I would not make a special trip just to attend the meeting.

I will not be able to make this year's meeting but would suggest following tjkraz's twitter feed for a good summary of the event.

As part of your annual fees documentation, the budget is broken down somewhat, so you can see where your fees are going. Basically, the only "fat" in the dues is the administrative fees for managing the timeshare. And there isn't much to be done there either.

Salaries go up each year. Utility costs go up each year. Maintenance costs go up each year.

The thing to keep in mind for lowering operating costs is where would that come from? Reduced housekeeping? Reduced transporation services? Less people working at the front desk? If they did that, members would be screaming.

Couldn't you just hear it? "I'm a DVC member and I paid good money for this. I demand you get me my room now!!" Or "What do you mean I have to pick up my clean towels myself?" (like every other timeshare)

I just RSVP'd for DH and I. We have not attended one before. We'll be down there and the timing of the meeting doesn't really conflict with any plans per se, so I figured it would be nice to attend if even just once.
