Blue Lagoon Dolphin Encounter

I have been researching this excursion and have a few questions. At Blue Lagoon's own website, it says that children 3 and under are free with an adult. Disney seems to charge for 3 year olds. I am guessing the the excursion price is higher than the price direct because of transporation to the area?? Does the Disney excursion take you directly to the Blue Lagoon, or do they take you to where other people catch the ferry?

I would love to hear about any of your experiences with the dolphins. Thanks!

I can't help you with the 3-and-under questions, but I can give you some details about the Blue Lagoon Dolphin Encounter that we did last month.

We enjoyed the dolphins, but we had not expected the long boat ride ahead of time. We enjoyed it but probably wouldn't do it again.

First, according to the instructions on our tickets and in the Navigator, we all met in a bar onboard. A Disney person had us sign the waivers . . . then she gave us tickets for lunch, tickets that showed we'd paid for the dolphin excursion, towels, and stickers that showed we were part of the dolphin group.

The people who were going on the Blue Lagoon Beach Day met in the same place, but the received different stickers. Note: do not pay for BOTH the dolphin excursion and the beach day -- some people did this. They're right there on the same island, which is very small. If you do the early dolphin excursion, you can spend the rest of the day sunning on the beach for free. The boat left (I think) at 2:00 and 4:00 -- you decide when to return.

We left the ship in a HUGE group -- we didn't like that part -- and walked, I guess, half a mile through some shops, etc. to a two-decker boat. My family was the last to board, and we didn't get a seat on the boat. It was rather like the chairs at the Mickey pool; some people would rather have two chairs for themselves and their stuff rather than let other people have one. The ride was about 45 minutes.

When we reached the island, the Blue Lagoon Beach people were instructed to go one direction while the dolphin people went the other. It is something of a walk to the dolphin area -- perfectly do-able for school-aged children and adults, but I don't think I'd take pre-schoolers. We could see the dolphins as we walked, so we were very excited!

Once we were there, we heard a short talk on what we'd do in the dolphin area. Our photography options were explained to us at the end of the talk -- after all, they're trying to make money.

We were then divided into two groups, and we went down to the water! Each group was taken to a floating O-shaped dock (covered, no fear of sunburn), and we sat on three sides of it. We were given lockers big enough to hold fanny packs and maybe shoes. We were asked to remove jewlery, but cameras were allowed in the dolphin area (with the warning that they would get wet).

The dolphin trainer introduced us to McGuiver, who'd starred in the '95 version of Flipper. Each individual family got into the water briefly (there's a nice wide metal grate about 3' in the water that you step down onto, and a picture was taken as the dolphin kissed one person. The picture is $15, if you wish to purchase it.

The trainer then began the program in earnest. He took 1/3 of the group into the water, and each person got a chance to interact with the dolphin: the dolphin kissed us, danced with us, etc. Two small children (including my usually 1st grader) were frightened by the size of the dolphin and they got out of the water. Just as the advertising said, we were in the water with the dolphin for about 20 minutes.

When it was over, we exited (through the gift shop) and went to eat lunch at the only restaurant on the island. Disney had provided us with tickets for lunch, which was suprising because it wasn't mentioned in the brochure. It might have been a mistake. Lunch was good: burgers, hot dogs, chicken, fish . . . we enjoyed it.

We had some time left before the 2:00 boat back to the ship, so we spent a little bit of time on the beach, which was beautiful! DH wanted to go to Atlantis, so we chose to take the early boat back; because the crowd was split in half (many choosing to stay on the beach), seats were plentiful. I think I would have enjoyed the Blue Lagoon Beach Day very much -- it's almost as nice as Castaway Cay.

When we returned to Nassau, we were beseiged by the hair-braiders -- that wasn't pleasant. We walked through the shops, but didn't really see anything interesting.

Again, we enjoyed the dolphin excursion. It was expensive but worthwhile -- except for my scaredy-cat child. I was disappointed that we spent so much time on the transfer-boat; that really wasn't made clear, and I didn't know to ask. I might do this again when the girls are teenagers -- they'd see it differently then. It's not an every-year type thing.

Questions? Please ask.

We did the dolphin encounter in October with a 4 1/2 year old and a 7 year old. This excursion was the highlight of our trip.

Yes, the Disney excursion takes you to the ferry where other people get on with you. I found the boat ride to be very relaxing.

My 4 1/2 year old did freak out upon entering the water during the encounter. However, I thought all the people at the encounter were very professional and did not a blink an eye when my son started to cry. If you think about it, that dolphin is a lot bigger than son's 40 inch body.

I LOVED the beach at Blue Lagoon. I thought it was a lot less crowded than Castaway Cay and still very beautiful. If you go behind the gift shop there are picnic tables where you can sit and enjoy the view with very few people around...especially after the encounters are over and everyone has left.

You can also do a dolphin swim but the children have to be over 6 or 7 years old. You have to book the swim directly with the company.

I would say DO this excursion. We thoroughly enjoyed it!

Thank you so much for your great description of this excursion. We are now thinking of scheduling our cruise for our DS 4th birthday (which means the age thing won't matter anyway). Have you done any other dolpin swims/encounters? Just wondering how they might compare. A few years back, DH and I did the swim at Xcaret (near Cancun). It was amazing.. the dolphins jumped over us and actually pushed us through the water.

We did the Dolphin Swim in Nassau about a year ago. It was the highlight of the trip! My DS (12) and DD (6) thoroughly enjoyed it. We booked ahead of time directly with the company at http://www.dolphinswims.com. I'm not sure you can book through the web site, but you can at least see what's involved by checking out the web site.

We did the "Swim with the Dolphins" rather than the "Encounter". The Swim was very involved, lots of time with the dolphins ("dancing", "kissing", petting, foot-push, etc.). Also very educational. I very highly recommend it, but be aware it's more pricey than the "Encounter". Also, I don't think you can book the Swim through DCL - you have to book it direct with the company.

My daughter was frightened a bit by the dolphins and decided to forgo the foot push, but she did everything else. Truly no need to be frightened - the animals are very gentle.

The boat ride over is kind of a pain - they recommend you get there an hour or so before the boat departs. They recommend that so you'll shop in the little terminal area. You probably only need to arrive 15 minutes or so before the boat departs.

The taxi over to the terminal was a trip, but only because of my daughter's behavior! Long story there - I think I've posted that on another thread...

We decided not to get the video/pictures they offer there. We brought our own camera and camcorder, but were only able to take pictures with the camera (it was waterproof). Even then, we were so involved with the program that our pictures weren't that great. If I did it again, I'd either have one adult not join the program so they can take pictures, or pay for the pictures/video they offer. If you enjoyed this excursion as much as we did, you'll kick yourself for not having more mementos of the trip!

Have a great time!

Just a Post Script to my post.

I agree with family dad. We purchased both the video and photo album. We got to spend more time with the dolphins so they could get some great pictures of us....a definite plus. The video was $50 and the photo album, about 20 pictures in all, was $100. These two items are the things that I treasure most from our cruise. The kids watch the video over and over again and I enjoy looking at my picutres.

I did see some people at the encounter hand their video camera to couple that had not gone into the water yet. They agreed to tape for them but also dropped their lens cap into the water. I also saw a lot of people with waterproof cameras taking pictures. A lot of times you were not facing the other people (when the dolphin kisses your cheek) so the pictures they took probably were not as good as the one's we got.

If we take the Dolphin Encounter with Disney, will we have a chance to get the package for video and picture album? thanks in advance for the info!

The video/pictures are sold by the company doing the excursion, not DCL. But I would guess that you could buy the video/pictures whether you book through DCL or not.

We did the dolphin swim at blue lagoon & loved it, our 10 yr old GS was with us. We loved the pictures that they took and bought some of them and wanted so bad to buy the video, but some how when they loaded the camera the film had messed up so no video. :(
For next year we already have booked discovery cove for the day after the cruise (pray we don't get rained or stormed out) since it is in july.
We were on a cruise in 1998 and had booked a sting ray excursion, it got cancelled due to rough waters. Hopefully we will be able to swim with the dolphins, and sting rays at discovery cove, and also snorkle etc, and relax while floating around.

30 days...
I can't wait to do this excursion! When do they offer their pictures? Does the album include all the photos of the family? or would it be 50.00/person...same question for the video...is the 50.00 for video of the family or just of one person?
Thanks!

Good info Mrs Pete.. I like details!! Sounds so nice!::yes::

It is $50 for the video and that is for the whole family. It is $119 for the photo album and again it is the whole family...about 20 pictures, excellent quality. When you get to the encounter, they will ask you if you want the photo album package. You tell them before you enter the water and then the fun begins.

Make sure you bring a credit card or cash to pay for the video and album.

Have a great time!

awsome...I dont know if BF will let me though...I already want the pics on the ship...but I'm undecided on all of that (ship packages and such)
I'm a photo nut!!!

We didn't buy the photo album package. They had other prices can't remember what they were. We were offered to pay so much per print or a price for a few which worked out cheaper then buying individual photos. Sorry I can't remember what it was.
I know we only bought about 4 or 5 pics. and I agree the quality was great.
After the swim we picked up the photos in the gift shop.

I'm a little confused. Getting more time with dolphins by buying the album can be done even if you take the Disney excursion? or do you have to go wtih the other company for great pictures and extra time. Please let me know, any info. would help.
thanks:wave2:

Polynesianfirsttimer - I took the Dolphin excursion through disney and purchased the album. However, Disney has NOTHING to do with this album purchase. You tell the people at the encounter that you want the album and then they take pictures of you and the family. In order to get good pictures for you, we got to spend an extra 3-5 minutes with the dolphin...not a lot of time. I hope that helps.

I have a question for the original poster.....did you ever make it to Atlantis? How far was it from the Blue Lagoon beach? Thx for all your comments!!

These are all great questions-thanks for posting!!! We leave in 1 month-I can't wait!!!
How was the food? I'm a little undecided...just a couple of photos or an album...a woman I work with said that when she went she would have gotten the video...but that si going to total like 160 $$$ thats a pretty big hit...but it sounds worth it!!!

I just booked the encounter at the website. Much cheaper than the DCL excursion price. Much less expensive, just need a taxi to the ferry.

Maybe we'll see you there! however, we booked thru dcl...
