I made reservations for the Blue Bayou for lunch (our first time eating there! :woohoo:) and I have heard that it is only a good experience if you get a waterside table. Do you agree? How long do you usually have to wait to be waterside and is it really worth it?

The two times we've eaten waterside, we had pretty early reservations and both were for special occasions (big birthdays)...I think we only had to wait 5 minutes each time. I don't know if there are any bad tables but you get less of the magic if you're by the entrance (especially during a sunny day...a lot of light comes in the entrance and kills the dark bayou feel) or by the kitchen (pretty noisy).

We had dinner at a non waterside table and it was still nice, in my opinion.

Once you check in for your reservation tell the hostess you would like to have a Waterside table. I've been told "it's going to be a hour longer" and it never is, they just say that. Also stop by if you have a dinner res and tell them in the early afternoon that you want waterside so they know early on. *

I think the only bad table is the one right at the entrance at the foot of the step into the restaurant. You lose the experience because of the light from the outside and because people are constantly walking by that table in and out of the restaurant. They were going to seat us at that one last summer and I politely asked if we could be seated at any table in the restaurant, but that table. The waiter said that we might have to wait, and I said that was fine. He was able to immediately seat us elsewhere. We have been waterside and non-waterside, and really enjoyed both.

the restraunt doesn't lose it's luster if you don't get a water side table. I know it may sound like people are saying that, but it's not true.

What we (as I'm part of this group) are saying is that it's a whole lot BETTER if you get a table by the water. It's just more... I dunno, special.

The longest we've had to wait (with a reservation already set) for a table by the water was 20 minutes.

Totally worth it.

There are places to sit in the waiting area outside the restaurant. If you are like me, you could use a pre-meal break/warmup :lmao:

We were not waterside last trip. We were a row behind...and still we had a great time. This trip however, I will be making our ressies asap so we get the waterside.

It's great no matter where you sit (IMO), but it's better waterside. :) We are always willing to wait for waterside because it's that much better.

I just made my ressies for lunch, and I was told you have to tell the hostess when you check in if you would like a waterside table. You can't specify that on the actual reservation.

Thanks everyone for the advice! I will try to get waterside, but it sounds like I shouldn't stress if we end up elsewhere.

Ive eaten at BB twice and both times not a waterside table but close to it like the next row and it doesnt take away from the experience not being waterside I love eating their full stop but wont be on this trip (Oct) as its too expensive for my sister (normally do it with DH)

Waterside makes all the difference in the world there. It's not that hard to get seating there, either, so don't worry. Just ask. You won't have to wait long.

Those tables far away from the water--back by the entrance and serving stations--imagine paying what it costs to eat there, sitting there. It's depressing. I imagine you would spend the entire time wishing you were by the water.

It's great watching the Pirate boats go by, they wave, it's just peaceful. It's a very nice place where ambiance is what it's all about. Otherwise, just eat across the way in New Orleans Square where they have much of the same food (monte cristo) and watch the NO Square crowd.

We ate there one time on a Sat night with a 6:30 reservation. We got there early at about 6:00 and told them we wanted a water side table. They told us it would be a 40 minute wait but since we were 30 min early we didn't mind. We ended up getting a table at around 6:45 so not bad at all.

I really liked sitting near the water and the food is good but I was disapointed in the portions. All 3 adults were hungry within an hour of eating as we ate very light for lunch in anticipation of dinner. BB is not the place to go if you are really really hungry. That and the prices make it a "won't do that again" place but it was worth it for a one time experience.

We've been waterside, and we've been away from the water (but not right near the doors). I, personally, like being AWAY from the water.

But I'm an anomaly, because I have low vision in the dark (thank you lasik!) AND extreme sensitivity to light *changes* (again, thanks lasik! 20/20 wasn't worth it!). So not only did it take ages for my eyes to adjust so I could see anything, but any time anyone took a flash picture near us I went nearly blind again, and if I made the mistake of looking near the doors, I went nearly blind again.

NOT my idea of fun.

When we sat away from waterside, at a lighter table, I didn't have those extremes to deal with. And it was still lovely. Lovelier, for me, since I could actually see during my entire meal.

I agree on asking for waterside and making sure you get it. If its your first time, you're going to want the best experience, and you may decide you don't want to go back if you don't like the food or the price :rolleyes1 so don't waste it on a non waterside table. I will tell you they hesitate to seat parties of 2 at the waterside since they make more money off 4+ people, but that doesn't sound like an issue with your group.

My favorite time at the Blue Bayou, waterside of course:
Monte Cristo sandwich......$23
Cookie Boat.....$9
Having people in boats yell out to you across the dimness, "Hey! Throw me some chicken!" ....priceless! :thumbsup2

Sadly, they don't have the delicious Flying Dutchman Cookie Boat anymore. I've heard claims they couldn't find a proper maker for the edible hard sugar sail, but heck, they could have used a plastic one. Nobody eats it anyway, but the rest of the dessert is YUM!!! It was one of the best parts of eating there. You can google it if you want to see it.

I think for the price you should go for waterside. We've never had to wait that much longer and I feel you should really enjoy yourself since its a splurge! Have fun and don't forget to look up to see the "shooting stars"!

My DH and I have dined there at least 4 times , and only once waterside by our request on our honeymoon trip. Waterside is nice and cool and all but I don't think sitting elsewhere takes away from the experience at all. It's a more intimate setting overall and the low lighting and sounds just make it very enjoyable. I respectfully disagree about the portion size - DH and I and our past guests we have gone with have always left full and happy. Of course this is all very personal and take everyone's experience with a grain of salt.

One trip there were nearly 12 of us in the center and my back was to the water and I still enjoyed it just as much. It is very nice but not needed to enjoy everything.

You were hungry an hour later? Did you share meals? I ask because we can go at 11:30 for lunch and not want to eat again until 8 pm. lol There is so much food I can hardly finish a meal, many times I simply can't. You get soup or salad to start, your meal with a side of potatoes (best potatoes ever!) and veggies, plus you get bread during the meal....I always leave stuffed.

DBF and I have eaten there twice as a party of 2 and had no problems getting waterside. They did try to put us at a table by the kitchen once, we asked for a different spot and got it with no problems.

Oh and we usually get "hey, throw me a roll" LOL We usually pretend to toss one and we always wave if we see people in the boat waving to us. :) I do wish they still had the cookie boat, that was soooooooooooooo good!!!!!
