Blu-Ray Players - Any recommendations?

My wife, bless her soul, decided to treat me to an early father's day present and bought me a blu-ray player. She bought a Sylvania. Watched "Twilight" last night, and picture was amazing. Unfortunately, there were several skips throughout. Disc is brand new and didn't appear to have a scratch on it.

We're going to return the player tonight and pick out a new one. I'm looking at both a Sony and a Samsung. Sony created the technology, but their products have gone downhill over the past decade. Samsung has always been iffy, but I've read good things about their players.

Anyone have any opinions?

We have a Sony blu ray player and had problems with a few discs not loading or freezing, a little research online let us to upgrade the firmware on it and it has been working fine since but I'm sure over time we'll need to do this again as newer firmware upgrades come out, it is not hard to do and probably common for all brands? Maybe yours needs an upgrade...I would check the support website for that brand before taking it back.

We've been shopping for a Blu-Ray player for about a year and a half... I'm procrastinating because something better is always coming out in six months.

Anyway, I always have "the best" Blu-Ray player sitting on my Wish List at Amazon.com. Currently, it is this one:

We have a panasonic as do our friends and neither one of us have had problems. We got it at costco for a good price.

PlayStation3 is an excellent blu-ray player.

We bought a Samsung one last weekend. We ended up with a more expensive model so that we could coordinate it with our entertainment system. We've been watching Netflix instant movies/tv shows on it through our cable connection and it's great.

I don't know if any of this still holds true... and it may never have been true, maybe it was just a sales pitch.

...but when I went to buy a blu-ray player in late 2007. The guy in the blu-ray department said the lower end models weren't that great. (It seems like maybe there was some sort of audio issue.) He said to get the best experience you needed to get at least a mid-range player. He then said if you are going to do that, you might as well get a Playstation 3 since it was about the same price and then you get the whole video game system as well.

I bought a P3 and we've been very happy with it. I also think this guy might have been legit (and not just selling me) because the PS3 was in a different department so he didn't get commission on it.

Generally, I like Samsung products. I have a Samsung printer and DW has a Samsung cell phone--they're good quality and have held up reliably.

(I'm lusting after this sweet Samsung refrigerator with french doors, digital thermostat control and ice dispenser in the front door, but that's another thread.... )

Sony for 1.5 years and no problems... love HD blu-ray!

PlayStation3 is an excellent blu-ray player.

We have a PS3 and the reason we got a the Sony blu ray BDPS300 is mainly the noise factor, also if you like to use a universal remote you can't do that with the PS3 and be aware that the PS3 comsumes much more power than a regular player.

It's funny - I bought a Samsung Blue Ray player and my husband wanted to get another Play Station 3 player for it. We have a Play Station 3 Blue Ray on our main TV, but I laughed and told him are you kidding me.

The Samsung gets stuck sometimes and we have to go downstairs to finish watching a movie on the Play Station.

If we buy another I'm getting a Play Station again. It works beautifully! Way better than the Samsung.

I'm going to try the firmware update when I get home. Should be interesting as I'm not in the least bit computer literate.
