BLT- MF's

We were at Kidani last week and ate at Chef Mickeys for dinner. We were a little early and wanted to go see BLT. So we asked the DVC rep there at Contemporay how to get there b/c we wanted to see it and go to the gift shop. He told us that we could only go between the hours of 2-4 and that BLT didn't have a gift shop like the rest (we didn't know that). His other comment was, "that's why there MF's are so low". Has anyone else heard that. Just curious

IMHO low dues are a sales ploy. BLT members will still pay for all of the common fees just like any co-located DVC. Front Desk, Mousekeepers, Bell Services, Buses, Monorail are paid for by dues. Just wait for the bill when they have to clean the windows at BLT.

BLT doesn't have a store or front desk either. You check in at the Contemporary. Also, the grounds surounding it are smaller, less upkeep. That is what I was told by another, more friendly, person. There is nothing in there besides the rooms and the lounge. Those are great, though. It is the reason we joined DVC.

VWL and BCV do not have a store or front desk either.

VWL doesn't have their own gift shop or 'front desk' either; BLT isn't really that odd in that respect IMO. I lurked around my first Disney home in Oct. and will be staying there for the first time the Sunday after Thanksgiving! Can't way for my 6 night research trip! (LV studio)

That's incredible! If the gift shop at Kidani is the reason that the MF are higher there, then please shut down the gift shop immediately and lower my MF's!

The reason for the higher fees at AKV is the upkeep on the animals and grounds. That part costs a lot of money from what I have been told.

A major factor resulting in the lower per point MFs at BLT than other resorts is mathematics. It has the highest per point per room cost per night of any of the resorts. That means DVD is selling a lot more points per unit at BLT than it is at other resorts. Thus, the MF's are being spread among more points per unit than at other resorts, resulting in a lower amount of MF's per point than at other resorts.

When you look at MF's at a resort, you also have to look at how many points it takes to stay there. For example, 1 week, 1BR, Magic Season, AKL Savann View is 270 points. BLT MK View is 361 points. Multiply that by the MF's and you get a rough idea on cost to stay there (not including initial purchase).

Agreed, which is why I think the most cost effective use of points for BLT owners is to use their points at other DVC resorts.

However, I think everyone can agree that it makes no sense to spend more on points at BLT and then just stay at other DVC resorts. It would make more sense to buy at a resort where you can get points for $75 - $85. There are several resorts on the resale market at that price including AKV, BCV and BWV. But then again, they all do have higher MFs....hmmm. It's sounds like a debate ... again.

Probably best "not to go there," but--what the heck--I definitely think the point is debatable. I know I bought at BLT (in the $90s per point after incentives) thinking that the most cost effective use of my points would be to stay at other resorts. I didn't mind paying a little more upfront than resale because of the 2060 expiration date.

I agree with you about e cost to care for e the animals. I just think its a stretch to attribute the lack of a gift shop as the reason given for the lower MF's at BLT.

Generally, I would agree that if you have no intent of staying at BLT it is better to buy elsewhere although ultimately the difference in overall cost is unclear. BLT, because MFs are spread among more points per unit resulting in lower per point MF cost for a member, will likely continue to have a lower per point annual MF cost than other resorts. Thus, in comparing overall cost between BLT and another resort over the years, the higher per point sale price for BLT may ultimately be made up by the lower per point annual dues for BLT. Nevertheless, that is probably unlikely when you are looking at a $30 per point difference in sale price. However, I would have serious reserves about choosing BWV or BCV in the resale market over a purchase of BLT from Disney because there is a another major factor to consider which may not make BCV or BWV the better choice -- BCV and BWV have a 2041 end date compared to BLT's 2060.
