Hi All,

I am a first-time buyer and I want 100 points for BLT. Disney is offering them at $114 per point ($120 - $6 promo) with a June UY and they include 100 points for 2010 (to be banked), but I only have to pay one month of dues ($31.46) to get the 100 2010 points. Also thinking of using the Disney VISA for the 6 month 0% financing. They will honor this offer to me until Dec 11 2010, since I called prior to the upcoming price increase.

The other option is to try get BLT @ $100 per point via resale, but many listings do not even have the 100 points for 2011, since they have been banked or borrowed.

So, as I see it, on a 100 point contract, I pay an extra $1,400 for buying from Disney instead of resale, but I get the 100 2010 points, 6 months 0% financing and no hassles for my 100 points in 2011. I think the 100 2010 points alone are worth it. Am I missing anything?

Thanks!

I paid $100/pp resale. However, I saw on one of these boards recently that Disney was selling BLT for $97pp for some black Friday deal!! To not have to deal with the hassle of ROFR and higher closing costs would be fantastic. I'm not sure if you can still get that deal. It was a Disney place in Chicago or NY (I'm not really familiar with the satellite places and how they work).

Anyway, for $1400 you have to ask how valuable/important it is to be able to use your Disney CC to finance? You will also gain 140 Disney dollars! So, that's some savings. If you really want to use the CC, just buy through Disney.

No, I don't you are missing something and the deal is pretty good.

I bought my BLT points through Disney and used the Visa and it is great to delay having to pay the numbers.

Not only do you save the interest, but you do get the 1% back in reward dollars, bring your difference to around $1300.

And, if you value those 2010 points (that the resale contracts don't have) at 10.00 per points (what you could get if you rented them), it brings your extra cost to around $300. The ease of going thorugh Disney is worth it.

When I bought, I even got them to delay the final charge to the Visa so it missed my statement closing date and ended up with closer to 7 months from when I agreed to buy to having to pay it off.

I just did this again in August with my add on. I put the deposit down on August 8th and then they did not bill the CC the balance until September 8th. I still had access and use of the points, but got an extra month!

Good luck!

Hey, Kansas wazzoo,
Yes, direct from Disney in this case may be the way to go.
Your closing costs would be at least $425, so even if you got the contract you want with use year you want and 100 points from 2010 at $100 per point, you would still be paying $104.50 per point.
I bought a resale in Sept 2007, sent deposit and notoriazed paperwork Sept 30, 2007, and it took until 12/27/07 to close.!!!! 3months!
It is sometimes difficult to get 100 point contracts, so if that is what you want, I say go for it, and Merry Christmas.
:santa:

Didn't know you can use the Disney VISA for the down payment. That's a good option. Wish I would have thought about that two weeks ago when we were there.

We recently purchased BLT direct from Disney in 2010 and couldn't make the resale avenue worthwhile. There were some stripped contracts (no points until 2012) that were listed for $92 but wrong use year for us.

Otherwise everything was $102 or so and paying $112 to Disney for the right use year, 2010 and 2011 points available and no closing made it a no brainer. We could have sold our 2010 and 2011 points and come out ahead of resale.

Now, for resorts other then BLT, resale is can be very advantageous from a price perspective.

JWG's comments were spot-on. I purchased BLT direct from DVC to get the:
  • Number of points I wanted (smaller than I thought possible for a new buyer. never hurts to ask)
  • Use Year I wanted (June)
  • Full allotment of points, including 2010

I just dropped off the paperwork in the FedEx box. Now I am reading the rules in the Vacation Planner and reading posts on a blustery morning.

They aren't giving you anything. If you buy a June UY contract, you are currently in June 2010 UY. Only one month left in the calendar year - dues are paid calendar year, not UY - so that's why you only pay for one month of dues before next year. Then in Jan, you pay the entire year's worth of dues.

In reality, you've lost out on nearly seven months worth of usage on those June 2010 points. But you are only paying dues for the last month of the calendar year.

Then June 1, 2011, you get your next set of 100 points.

Resale or direct. Like any other purchase you make in life, make sure you understand how it "fits" for you. I know I did resale because the per point $ was great but financing was not an option which was not an issue for me since I was paying cash. so there is probably not a perfect answer. somewhere along the line you will have to make compromises. In the end, I hope you become a DVC owner- you will forget the purchase process soon thereafter!

No you are not missing anything. It makes sense for you to buy thru Disney.
Good for you!!!!

I don't see how she is losing out on anything regarding the 100 points from 2010. She is having them banked and she can use them between 6/1/11 and 6/1/12. If she wasn't able to use them during that time then I would agree that she would miss out on those points as they would be wasted.
