Just got a phone call from DD21. her Dr wanted to do some blood work,so after fasting all last night she walked into the clinic 7 Oclock this morning for 9 different tests. She is terrified of needles also, she was lucky that her newly wed DH took her. She was told that one test was $90.00:eek: forget that, what kind of person has an extra $90.00.Not us.

Sometimes when there is a blood test that there are charges for come hospitals will pay the fee. This was the case when I needed to have a blood test done for Celiac disease. My doctor told me to have it done at McMaster and I wouldn't be charged.

Might be worth looking into.

I am a lab technologist at a hospital here in BC. There are so many blood tests that can be done and many of them would cost $90 or even a lot more. But wouldn't your daughter have a medical plan that would pay for it? If it was some special test that was not covered by this plan (can't really think of many instances) then the doctor should have warned her about the cost. Just my opinion. Best of luck. Also, about being terrified of needles - the more you tense up, the more it will hurt. And most of the times, the needles hardly hurt.

I have to go and get my blood work done next month- 4 different tests- no costs. But my sister, she will have to pay $90 for the Celiac test. I don't know why she would have to pay either. It's weird! :confused3

I've had many blood tests done in my life :headache: But I've never had to pay for them. I'm surprised OHIP doesn't cover your DD's costs

There are many tests not covered in Ontario...... here is one list http://www.lifelabs.com/files/Ontario_QRA_files/Non-OHIP_Billable_Tests.pdf I know it was in the news that prostrate test (PSA) IS now covered so I guess it changes depending on what ones they decide to fund. Our drug plan covers them (80% anyway) but all plans are different. There was a good W5 show about all the drug costs many cancer patients have to pay for themselves......thousands and thousands. Our health care system is FAR from perfect.

My sister took her daughter in for a blood test yesterday. It took my sister and 3 other nurses to hold her so a 4th nurse could draw the blood. She didn't mention a charge for it so I don't think there was one.

I guess that the test was to see if she was alergic to wheat.DD called our doctor and he said that it wasn't that important anyway.Dh's cousin said that she went for blood work and one was over $200.00, she also said forget that.

Hilarious typo!!

Also, the PSA (for prostate) is only covered if there's a family history or other high risk factors, at least in Ontario. Otherwise it's around $85.

I am a lab tech here in Nova Scotia and I've never heard of a blood test ordered by a physician for diagnostic purposes that isn't covered by our version of universal medical insurance. Paternity testing is not covered but all allergy testing is, in my experience. I don't even think our hospital has any kind of ability to accept payment at the out patient collection lab. When you use a private collection service there is payment for that service but not for the diagnostic testing of reporting.

Sorry but I have no insight for you, just stumped a bit.

It was just the image of a special blood test that must be done while laying on the floor...

Actually I'm a lab tech too....and we do have tests that the person needs to be lying down...but they're called supine...not prostrate!! We also have a standing version...apparently there is something that the levels may be different standing or lying down. But I'm getting off topic....I'm surprised the doctor didn't tell your daughter there would be a charge. I'm pretty sure that the allergy testing on blood that we do in our hospital is billed, as it is an uninsured test, and quite expensive to run.

I'm having a PSA done next week and was told that as there's no family history I will have to pay. (If you are diagnosed with prostate cancer the test magically becomes free.) But now that I've hit the half-century mark I think it's prudent to get a baseline for these things in case issues develop later on. I only hope I'm not prostrate following the blood test... :worship: ;)

Last time I had my blood test(mine were free); there were others at the lab that had to pay to the tests. You would think that the doctor would have stated that there is a cost for the tests so that you are prepared.

That is for Celiac disease, and is not covered in Ontario, Tiger

The Celiac test was the one my Dr. advised me getting done at Mac as they will pay for it but I would have to at a regular lab. Maybe there is a hospital in your area that would cover it.
