My friend's blood pressure is 165/90, and I told him he should get to the doctor as soon as possible to get treated with medication, or whatever. He said he will go next week....in the meantime, I hope he doesn't have a stroke. Any medical people out there that can give me any information regarding this, or some good advise on how to get him to go for medical attention soon???

Do you know if he has a BP cuff so he can check it throughout the day? I have high BP, I am on meds for it, but pre-meds it would often run 165/95. I wouldn't say* he's in immediate danger of having a stroke, but he really should be monitoring it several times a day to see if there's a pattern. For all he knows that could be low for him. :confused3 I was having dizzy spells and heart palpitations, which is why I ended up at the doctor's office.

The day I went on meds was the day I went to the dr. and had a 165/105 reading. She said it would have to be quite a bit higher than that for me to be in danger of having a stroke, but she also said I should start the meds ASAP.

Sorry I'm not much help. I do think he needs to check it again and make an appt. if it's still that high or higher later today. He should call the nurse hotline at the very least.

* I am not a doctor or medical professional. ;)

where di they have it checked if not the dr office, i know the ones in our pharmacy the machines are not always calabrated correctly, or the cuff may off been to small resuling in higher or in correct readings.. i would encorage them to make an appt. offer to go with them.. High bp is nothing to play with, which i can tell you already know by your concern for your friend.. after a few checks my Dr did put me on med when i was 29 i am 50 now .. and it is still controled by two meds now.. and still i have trouble controling. good luck

Thanks for your input. My friend has had high blood pressure before, and was on medication. Then the blood pressure went back down to a normal level, and they took him off the medication.

He says that right now it feels like he has pressure on his chest, which is not a good thing either. I'll try to encourage him to get a doctor's appointment soon. He has a blood pressure check at home, and has been monitoring his own pressure, so not sure exactly how accurate the numbers are. He'll be 50 in June, so still relatively young.

My Dad had a massive stroke about 14 years ago and was never the same after that. I sure don't want to see anyone go through that.

Thanks again.

I was told the bottom number was the more important one? that is the pressure when the heart is at rest..

Your friends blood pressure is at stroke or heart attack levels and should consult a physician ASAP to get medicines. A stress test and blood levels would also be in order.

I recently read that the optimum BP level was 110/70.

If he has pressure on his chest he needs to go to the er now. Not the dr next week. He could be having a heart attack. I was a paramedic for many years and this is a sign of a heart attack. Please encourage him to be checked out ASAP!

I went to ER about 3 weeks ago with shortness of breath and a tightness in my chess. When I got to the hospital my BP reading at one point was 220/141!!

I was sent by ambulance to a hospital specializing in heart situations where I spent the next 4 days.

Hearts fine, luckily but my bp still spikes to awfully high numbers for no real reason, even while on bp meds.

The problem with hypertension is that the heart (pump) is working harder than it has to, and that extra workload, over time, weakens the heart muscle. You really don't even know this his happening which is why it's called the Silent Killer. But by the time the pump is weakened, it's very hard to manage at that point. The smart thing to do is to lessen the workload on the heart before damage occurs. This often isn't what happens though. People wait.

Needs to be evaluated immediately.
heart, liver issues, brain, muscle issues, many things to consider here

When I was having pounding headaches a while back, I went to Dr. They would not let me leave, literally called an ambulance. (I recall bottom number above 100!!) NOT good at ALL, top was also too high. They had me laying down and after a while, no reduction and off to ER we went.
It was so bad. Went to ER for full evaluation.....tests, etc and
No brain bleed as they suspected, instead just blood pressure that had been going up for a while and despite exercise, eating better, did not go down to satisfy either one of us. Had to have IV to get it down, that took longer than they expected,
back to doctor next day and onto meds to reduce it.
Doing great with meds (about a year) and feeling MUCH more secure. That was SCARY!!

A few months back, I was sick. I had bronchitis and was on all kinds of meds. I went to the doc and my BP was really high. it seems like it runs higher with the machines than it does manually. My resting puls is getting up there too, so this week i'm having resting don on my BP. My parents both dies of heart disease, so I can't be too careful.

I would check it over and over to look for trends.

My doctor has said to watch anything over 130/90, with the lower number bring more important. I typically run 125/85 and am not on meds.

I recently read that the optimum BP level was 110/70.

The thing is - that number has gone down over the years. 15 years ago - that 'optimum' number was much different.

Same with blood sugar levels - those readings have gone down, as well.

To me - it seems like "they" just want more people being more careful (or to be on meds.... )

I'm not saying the friend shouldnt see a DR - of course he should. But I do not believe his current number couldnt wait until next week. Some people have numbers higher than that, and never even know it - KWIM?

The pressure in the chest would worry me more, however that could also be due to a number of things....stress being one of them (which could also be the cause for the HBP reading)

That being said - where did he get that number from? Like a pharmacy chair thingee? I cant even tell you how many DR's have told me not to even bother with those machines. Theyre inaccurate more often than not.

I am also not a Doctor. Just a hypochondriac. ;)

His blood pressure has gone down since I originally posted this. He takes his own blood pressure at home. He has had high blood pressure before, usually related to stress (the company he works for has filed for bankrupsy and he is really worried about losing his job, many have already been laid off). So, I think his blood pressure is stress-related, but still, not a good thing.

Thanks to everyone for their posts.
