This might be a stupid question but we dont know the answer yet

I have a friend that is a manager at a blockbuster and is planning on relocating to Flordia. She concerned if her salary would change and if so is there a cercern % that they can decrease. She has not mentioned anything to someone above for the simple fact that is going to happen till later this year

Anything that you guys know would help
Disboards never lets me down

I don't know what kind of money she would make, but remember, no income tax! :cool1: That should save her a lot right there. Also, Florida isn't to bad about taxes like some states. North and South Carolina will nickle and dime you to death, or bankruptcy, whichever comes first :rotfl: .

It really depends on where you will be in the state. We are moving to Fort Myers in 2 weeks from Gainesville. We are paying twice the amount for the same size house we are in now. It is definately a more expensive area. When we were in Tallahassee the cost of living was comparable to Gainesville. I was shocked to see houses in Fory Myers.

unless your friend has a contractual agreement for how much her salary can increase or decrease based on a specific location it is at the employer's discretions. most retail companys pay whatever the going rate is in a specific area so while she may earn $10.00 an hour now, the going rate for her job title in the new state may be $7.50 per hour. it's important to find out what the salary will be and what the cost of living for the area is (this can vary alot between regions in states as well-i knew/know plenty of people who commute up to 3 hours each way because they can in no way afford housing in the area where they work-and there is no work in the area in which they live).

Housing has gotten so much more expensive here - it isn't really much cheaper to live anymore, IMHO (though other areas of the state aren't quite as bad).

Confused No income tax am I missing something

There is no state income tax in Florida, just Federal taxes.

As a side note, I lived in Florida in the late 80's, and worked at Lane Bryant at the time. My salary decreased considerably between NJ & Florida, but my cost of living also decreased considerably (we lived in Winter Park, just outside of Orlando)

It hinges on Blockbuster's policy, I would imagine. In some companies, transfers allow you to maintain your current pay rate (as long as your position remains the same) no matter the cost of living/local pay scale. (Incidentally, Disney is or was one of those companies -- I transferred from FL to NJ in the mid-90s and was able to keep a higher pay rate than my NJ peers.) Best of luck to your friend.
