It blows my mind to spend so much on a Magic Band, when the same effect can be done for much less with no visible difference (as has been pointed out). I guess it doesn't look bad, but nothing I'd be willing to wear. I'm not into bling.

I have MBs that I keep in my car for last minute trips. Have used them to go to the parks @10 - 12 times in less than 2 years.

Yes... yes... there are locals who visit frequently. That is a tiny portion of the people who visit. Most go every few years at most.

The article says "$450 worth of real gems," but as someone who does a lot of Ebay and Aliexpress shopping for low-priced, wholesale craft supplies from Asia, I'm guessing (hoping?) she didn't really pay that much. The "gems" look cheap and badly cut in the close-up shot, and I'm pretty sure someone who spent $450 on them wouldn't have glued them down so haphazardly or left all those glue spots. Honestly, I'm more offended by how sloppy her work is than how much she allegedly spent.

Lady, next time, I'll make you something nicer for $150 and you can tell all your friends it was custom-made for you by a master crafter for $700.

My point was that there do exist some people, like us, who could care less about the on-ride photos. It is not correct to say that "dead" magic bands are useless. "Dead" magic bands are just fine for us. As a side benefit, if Disney is in fact "tracking people's every move" in the parks via magic bands (which I sorta doubt), using one with a dead battery only gives them data for what rides you actually ride.

And my point is that MagicBands are intended to be temporary, throwaway items. Disney knows this, it's how they were designed. That's why Disney will shower you with them like confetti. They're dirt cheap to make and not intended to last.

You do all realize this has nothing to do with it being a Magic Band for her to use in the park or not, right? The whole point of whether it will work, how long it will work really doesn't matter. This has to do with, "Look at me! Look at how much money I have!"

Okay, agreed. It's still a "Look at me" stunt. It's using the $450 figure to turn it into press and free advertising. Has nothing to do with a working/non-working MB.

It's just not even pretty for 450 dollars. I honestly don't think it looks real, more school aged craft project. Especially not for a temporary item!

Also, my goodness people are being judgmental. It's not my thing but people can use their money on whatever they want. Who am I to judge I've spent more money on sillier things. At least she uses it.

Of course folks can spend however much money they want to spend on anything they want to spend it on. However, when the let their "prize" get posted in articles that we all can read....we are allowed to judge the result of their craft project.

I think it is ugly and that if someone asked me to calculate how much was spent, I would figure about $10 on those little "gems" I buy my granddaughters. It does not resemble anything that is worth even $100, let alone 4 times that much!

They have a short shelf life. Even paying $35 for a "special edition" is stretching it when you'll get to use it on at most a handful of visits.

Maybe people collect them. Maybe it's a souvenir from their trip. $35 isn't much for something small to remind you of a favorite trip or a small token of your favorite character. For someone who loves Disney and wants to make and wear a $500 Magic Band, what's the big deal? It's a bracelet she made and can wear for years whether or not it's functional inside the parks. I'm sure she enjoyed making it and wearing it and showing off her love for Disney. Why do we care what others spends their money on?

Speak for yourself. I consider $35 for a piece of plastic that was designed to be throwaway to be a monumental rip off.
