Blackberry Texting in US

We have a blackberry World Edition - Bell service and was wondering how the Blackberry Messaging works? Should we get a US service pack on the phone or will it be okay if we just blackberry messenger each other. Do we have to turn off anything else so we don't get roaming charges? Does anyone know?

I have a BlackBerry Tour from Bell and I always purchase the US text message plan, which lets me send up to 100 text messages without being charged roaming prices. I am not sure about BlackBerry Messenger however if I had to guess I would say you would be charged a lot for using it in the United States, because whenever we write a new e-mail we get charged a lot for doing that.

I have used BB messenger in the states many times and have not been charged for using messenger. Messenger goes through the BB's own messaging system and not through a cell phone provider.

However I also have had a data pack during those times for regular roaming for emails. So I'm unsure what would need to be turned off so that you would only have BB messenger working. Definitely contact your cell phone provider. Even if there is the possibility that you may use your cell phone for a voice call or to get emails, I'd get the voice and data plans. Saves you a lot.

With TELUS, at least on the "old" network, texting is free from the US if you have a text package. ie, they count towards your limit the same as if you are sending texts from Canada.

I was dubious and checked several times last time I went, and sure enough, no charge.

BB Messenger uses data I believe, so that would be different. Better (though not as convenient) to send regular texts.
