Black Rapid Strap

My camera is a Canon SX20 is.

I debated long and hard between this one and a DSLR. My thought process is that if I can learn all the ins and outs of this one using manual settings, etc., then I'll spring for bigger and better in a few more years. Meanwhile, I'll be content with the 20x zoom and optical image stabilizer (which my last super zoom didn't have :headache:).

What I'm thinking about is the Black Rapid RS-5:

I need a place to put the iPhone, tickets, Fast Passes, ID, credit/debit cards and a set of spare batteries. I had also planned on carrying (in a pocket or in the strap) a large ziplock bag in case of rain or water rides.

We're going to Disneyland in November/December and we'll be staying at VGC. So, if I try going "bagless" and it's not working out well that first day, it won't be too hard to run back to the room to pick up a bag. I have the Lowepro Fastpack 100:

I like it, it's very comfortable, but I don't want to carry it around all day. I also have a smaller bag with a shoulder strap that I could use, but I'm trying to avoid the bag.

Danielle, the lenscoat pouch looks promising. Is it fairly stiff, or could I fold it up and stuff it in a pocket?

Thanks for the help all! I really appreciate it. My goal for this year is to really learn how to make my camera(s) work for me.

I'm a huge fan of Think Thank belts, but they don't ride well all geared up. This is me, but typically I have two bodies and a dual rapid strap, that day, I just took one body in with me.

That's a great camera for a noob, here's mine::rotfl:

I had the exact same thought as you while drooling over a DSLR for weeks... Let me not dive head first into a rig that costs me a month's rent until I know what I'm doing.

These powershots are a great in-betweens and I've been learning more than I ever thought I would. The best part is I've been able to establish the features that I want in my DSLR, rather than buying one and finding out later it wasn't everything I wanted. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll find a dslr that has all the features I love about this camera, and I know I've spotted more than one dslr owner looking at mine somewhat enviously.

BTW, a speedlight on top is well worth it, if you haven't gone there yet.

Happy hunting!

Why not? ;)

All done with my camera on my Black Rapid strap. And a good firm grip on my camera!

Wow! Maybe I should invest in a hand strap too then. :rotfl:

Ack, more gear I can't live without!?

And to make life really interesting...I got a phone call from my mom inviting me to take her travel companion's place on her trip to Hawaii. All I had to do was buy my plane ticket. So, now I'm going to Hawaii next month!! :cool1: Oh, and really my favorite part, I'm staying right next door to Aulani! :woohoo:

So, what else should I put on my shopping list for my trip to the local camera shop? ;)

$700 underwater housing for reef diving? :rotfl2:

Why are the best hobbies so expensive?

You got me searching and I think I found a Canon DSLR which has a rotating live view lcd, AA batteries (sort of), and SD cards... so I'm imposing a moratorium on any more spending for the powershot until I get one of them EOS'. At least the flash, rechargeable AA's, and SD cards will carry over.

I should be able to buy that EOS in about 3 years

I'm good on that one. I don't dive, so no need for that stuff. And if I really have to take an underwater photo, I'll just borrow the waterproof Olympus I bought my son for camp. :goodvibes

You got me searching

Yikes! Sorry about that! Glad you found one that might work for you though. :thumbsup2

been there done that, but I use the optech dual harness....

optech now has a sling type strap for around 25 bucks...
Follow my thought process here - let's say that I want a sling strap but that I don't have any other sling strap accessories. Here are my options:

1) Buy a Utility Strap for $25
2) Buy pro strap for $22 and get the sling adapter for $11 for a total of $33

OR - and here's where I think I'm going to land if you think it will work out:

3) Buy the strap I want (pro strap), and get the "3/8" connector collection" that says it comes with the sling strap adapter (see # 14) for $8. That brings my total to $30. Thoughts?

Oh, and yes - I am that cheap that I'll do that much research just to get a $3 savings. :)

In other news, has anyone looked into their neoprene camera cases? What are your thoughts on them?

Hi all,

I've been eyeballing the Black Rapid straps. My concern is that if I buy it, I don't plan on carrying a bag to the parks. So, how do you protect your camera on rough rides if it's not in a bag?

I carry my camera on a BR also!

One of the nice feature is the quick release clip. You can just unclip it and slide it into the basket or nets on some rides. But most of the time I'm shooting with it on the rides.

I use a Zing Neoprene Camera cover for my Rebel XS. It works for those times when you don't want to tote more than just the camera (and perhaps a second lens in a belt pouch).

I've used it on all the rides in the MK - it's got enough padding to handle the bumps the camera takes getting into and out of the rides as well as the bangs against the sides of rides like Space Mountain. I wouldn't want to depend on it to protect the camera if it were to fall off of a table or anything.

It's lightweight, easy to wrap/unwrap around the camera and stays attached to the camera when it's not wrapped around it. I definitely recommend it.
