Does anyone have one??

What do you eat?

I was recently diagnosed with a black pepper allergy and while eating salad (daily) has done great things to my waistline, I'm getting REALLY tired of lettuce and veggies.

I had a post on here a while back because I was (and still am) experiencing a swollen throat. While the allergist was able to give me a bit of peace of mind, it's not been a 100% fix. We are still throwing around the idea that it may be reflux (I don't think so, but I'm still doing what the doctor ordered).

I am trying to be conscious about my food intake. Any recipe ideas??

I found out I was allergic to Black Pepper back in 1976 when I was in the Marine Corps. It is the most aggravating allergy to have.

People don't believe you, restaurants are impossible to navigate. Church and family gatherings always have pepper in them.

The worst part is people really don't believe you, you feel like just going ahead and having something with pepper in it, to prove the reaction (last time was to the hospital - could not breathe, throat was closed up).

You get the reaction - "there is just a little in it, you won't even taste it" - GESH.

I use all the recipes that everyone else uses WITHOUT the pepper. I love beef, and love LAWRY'S® Seasoned Salt and Worcestershire.

I am glad I found this post, for it seems no one else has this problem !

I have a moderate intolerance to black pepper AND garlic according to my blood tests (along with a billion other allergies, including wheat, soy, egg, peanut, vanilla, yeast... list goes on). Trying to eat out without black pepper and without garlic has so far proved to be impossible. I haven't eaten out in 9 weeks since the diagnosis. When I make a recipe that calls for black pepper, I use cumin powder. It isn't exactly the same, but it gives a good kick and is better than no kick at all. It is frustrating to have allergies that are in everything. Good luck as you navigate your new diet! :thumbsup2

Hey there! Black pepper is the only food allergy I did not outgrow. Mine is mild to moderate--not life threatening, my system just hits the *eject* button in a big way.... I have no issues not using it when cooking. Outside of WDW, I rarely eat out but that is due to living very rural and being a food snob--not the allergy. At social gatherings, I only eat the dishes that I prepared--and desserts of course! The only food I ever had issue with at WDW was the cheddar cheese soup ay LC, but that is MY fault for not asking.

One of my biggest issues is that I don't really know what black pepper tastes like so I cannot detect it in a dish, even when it is a prominent flavor.

I agree that is it nice to find others with this problem.
