Has anyone asked here about what the meaning is of this song? We've wondered. My husband thinks she might have been drinking paint thinner or something when she wrote it...

If I'm not mistaken, I actually heard her talk about this on some show, once (right after Kat McPhee sang it on American Idol). She said something about the song being about "choices", and that one choice (the "black horse") was about doing evil for the pleasure of it, and the other (the cherry tree) was the harder, but righteous, choice.

Yeah, I don't really get that from the lyrics, either.

I think in my next life I will be a song-writer. I am good at making rhymes, and it looks like you can write a hit song with a title, four lines of nonsensical text, and some funny noises.

Maybe I will work something out this afternoon. I'll share it with you all if you promise not to steal it from me.
