I recently came across discounted rates for car rentals in BJ's wholesale club's travel brochures. I was able to get a quote using my temporary shopping pass which is about $40 less than the best deal I can find. Can I use my temporary shopping pass to book a rental or will the rental agency (Hertz) require me to show my BJ's card?

Normally I would just join BJ's but the membership is $50, so any benefit of obtaining the membership just for the rental will be lost

You can book the rental with the code on your shopping page. I'm rarely asked to prove any discount I claim (AAA, COSTCO, AP etc) but I always have my ID available.

Alamo (PHX) not only asked to see my COSTCO card but also swiped it to capture my membership number.

The discount is for BJs members. The temporary card doesn't make you a member. It's unlikely Hertz will ask. You might be able to get them to accept your shopping pass. Maybe not.

I'd just take a look at mousesavers and limit my searching to discounts I qualify for.

I sure wouldn't. I'm sure the Terms and Conditions of use of the discount code clearly state for valid paying members, not those using free passes.

Sure, you might not be asked, but again, it's the time you are and/or the time you have an issue with your rental that you will run into a major problem.

We are members of BJs Club and use them for our rental cars every trip. We have never been asked for our membership card but that doesn't mean that at some point they will ask for it. We always take it with us just in case.

Same here about Costco and Phoenix! I had the same thing happen a couple years ago at Sky Harbor. Thankfully I had my card (normally clear out purse for trip). In 2 weeks we are renting from Budget in Phoenix (they are by far cheapest right now and I check daily). They said in order to get second driver free (which is Costco benefit) my husband and I both had to have our Costco cards! Thankfully I found this out ahead of time and made a note for him to keep in billfold.

These cases might be few and far between but everyone should be aware they can and do happen. If you can't produce ID then the rate can change and there isn't much you can do. Good advice to limit discount to those you qualify for. You never know....and I'd hate to pay more for a car than I thought. FYI people have reported being asked for ID when returning a car too! So even if you use the kiosk someplace when that person scans it on return they could ask for ID!

We are BJ's members and on two occasions were asked for our card. One was in Orlando at the airport. I think it's hit or miss, but I know they have the right to decline for the BJ's quoted price.

I used the BJ's website and tried renting a car from Dollar . Out of curousity I erased the BJ's code and up came a city special for a mid size car at $118 per week at the end of August. I booked. :thumbsup2
Went back and tried again with various BJ codes for Dollar and had to laughh!!! NO CODE for my dates was cheaper :laughing::laughing:

I've been searching daily and on numerous sites and BJ's is about $48 cheaper than the best rate I have found. Unfortunately a BJ's membership is $50 so it earases any savings..
