Well its been ten years since I was at Disney. Have always liked staying on sight for the convenience of DW transportation and just enjoy the DW experience. This trip will be a little different than previous ones.

I am coming down solo for three days to visit my son who is lifeguarding at DW so really cannot justify the expense of an onsite hotel for myself. Basically need a flat spot to sleep and a warm shower. I usually do a weeklong bike trip with camping so am not new to sleeping on the ground.

Plan would be to bring my bivy bag or maybe buy a cheap tent on the way in from the airport. Leave my clothes and stuff in the rental car and just roll out the bag and sleep at night.

Is simple camping a realistic option?

Absolutely,,if your use to that sorta camping thing.
It'd kill me,,I'm a wuzz.

whats a bivy bag ??

Absolutely this would work.

Frank, I know what a bivy is. Personally I wouldn't use one in this case. I'd use a small tent and bring a fan to circulate some air in the tent on a summer night.

[A bivy is a cigar style tent that is basically the shape of a sleeping bag. Not much room for anything else]

Book a Partial site at the Fort which is the cheapest type per night and enjoy your visit....

Have your son make a "family discount reservation" for you at one of less expensive resorts. It should be less than you will pay for a campsite.

You can get a decent, cheap WalMart tent for the same price as a bivy sack and you'll have better ventilation and be able to actually sit up... search Walmart.com for "Exxel dome tent"; there's a 7' x 7' for under $30.
