Biscuit's Grand Adventure 2 - Adventures in Opposite - 12/3 Another Update!

After reading your past trip reports, I am fearing that this was literal and not figurative. :rotfl:
:rotfl2:
Luckily there was no cabbage on the flat bread so we were all safe.

Loved the Double update and I am really looking forward to what the surprise is.:cool1::cool1:
Thanks! Next update is written, it just has to be proofed. AND I have to resize and upload the pics. Hopefully in the next day to two it will be posted.

Previously on Biscuit's Grand Adventure 2, my body wanted to die, we all went to fly, and a snack was consumed rather quickly.

Not long after our last trip, I took an inventory of all the various junk we had picked up in the parks. After surveying our pile of "memories", I decided that the next time we went to The World, I was going to do something different. Rather than throw down wads of dough for multiple little trinkets, I was going to get the girls one big item, and leave the rest of the souvenir purchases up to them and their piggy bank.

I knew pretty much right away what the one big souvenir was going to be, and for five years I have mentioned it from time to time to torture, I mean to help build anticipation for our trip.

I never told the girls exactly what they were getting, but instead gave them some cryptic "clues" as to what lie in store.

They consisted of this:

It goes from ugly to pretty.
It goes from dark to light.
It goes from wet to dry.
Hoshimoto Soda
Sponge Bob

It drove the girls nuts, and they kept guessing what it was whenever I brought it up. (They actually guessed it mostly correct once, but I kept my poker face on and they didn't realize it.)

Reaching our destination required a considerable hike, and after psyching myself up for it, we set out from The Land and began our sojourn around the World Showcase Lagoon. The construction walls continued to dominate the landscape, with the area between Innoventions West and the Canada Pavilion being wholly consumed by barriers.

Before the trip, I looked up the Friendship schedule, so I knew when we left Soarin that we had JUST missed the final Friendship launch. Reaching the Promenade, we turned right and began navigating the World Showcase as pedestrians. The sun was beginning to ease up a bit, which I was more than happy about, and the crowds around the lagoon were heavy but not oppressively so. I soon found that the deeper into World Showcase that we traveled, the better the crowd levels became.

Despite it still being warm out and us being on a time table, it was a still great evening for stroll through Epcot. (Really when is it NOT a great evening for a stroll around Epcot? Oh wait. I answered my own question a few days later. But that's getting ahead of myself.)

Off Kilter was playing their last set of the evening as we rounded Canada, and I am sad to know that this was my last time ever seeing them there. But hey, at least we now have a group of lumberjacks hosting a log sawing contest.

Progress.

By this point in time, the combined forces of my earlier excursions and the limitations of First Lady Biscuit's RA were taking their toll on our walking pace. Easing up the throttle a bit, we soon settled into a more leisurely pace. Man it sucks getting old. But as my grandfather used to say "It sure beats the alternative."

After a bit, we found ourselves crossing the bridge over the canal that links The World Showcase Lagoon with Crescent Lake and encountered an unforeseen resistance to my master plan. For reasons I have not yet determined, Tahlia has had a thing for France lately. (I am told that many junior high girls go through an "I LOVE PARIS!!!" stage so I guess it's our turn.) As we headed towards the France Pavilion, Tahlia was hankering to head that way and do some exploring. Suppressing the urge to chant "Resistance is Futile!" I promised her we would explore it at a later time. Encouraged by my response and a promise of finally solving the five year mystery, she was content to move along.

Squeezing through the narrow passage between Spice Road Table and an in-progress performance on the outside stage in Morocco, we closed ranks, subconsciously grabbed the girls' hands, and shuffled through the standing crowds.

Soon we arrived at our target destination and turning right, headed into Mitsukoshi. The girls were immediately oohing and aahing over all of the Hello Kitty and cartoon merchandise. I had never been inside this place before, but didn't have too much trouble figuring out where to go. (The massive crowd of people and hearty drumming was my first clue.)

In case you hadn't guessed by now, we were going to do Pick A Pearl.

Do you get the clues?

I have read about this multiple times on the boards and always thought it sounded like a cool idea. It appealed to me for multiple reasons: it is a souvenir the girls can actually use and enjoy outside of the parks; they won't outgrow it; it will last for a very long time; it isn't your typical park merchandise.

For those unfamiliar with the concept, the way it works is this. You go around to the register side of the counter and tell them how many oysters you want to open. You then pre-pay for each one. (I can't find the receipt, but I am 99% positive they were $17 each.) The receipt is numbered, and once you have the number, you wait for it to be called. After your number is called, you point out to the cast member which oyster you wish to take a gamble on. The cast member then fishes it out of the tank for you and performs a little ceremony to open it. Whatever pearl is in there, you keep and can either take home as-is or have made into jewelry on site.

Once the girls figured out what we were actually doing, they were insanely excited.

IMG_6525_zps9b1d82b9.jpg

They look excited don't they?

There were about four people ahead of us, so we had some time to look around the shop and watch a couple of groups open their pearls.

IMG_6536_e_zps0a51b686.jpg

While we were waiting, I shared a tip I found on the DIS: pick the ugliest, nastiest, most horrid looking thing in the tank, and you'll have a better chance for getting a great pearl. I wasn't sure how accurate this advice would be, but I was about to find out.

As their turn approached, the girls got down and dirty searching both sets of tanks.

IMG_6529e_zps3fbd6761.jpg

Finally, after much conferring and plotting they found the ugly oysters they were looking for.

IMG_6527_e_zpsfc457338.png

Soon it was our turn and they pointed out their selection to Anna, the cast member from ***uoka Japan who was running the Pearl station.
EDIT - (Okay, apparently the DIS filter thinks her hometown is a dirty word. :rotfl2: Let's just say she is from northern Kyushu Island.)

IMG_6541_zpsf4d1f474.jpg

Anna scooped out the girls' selections, and placed them on a dark bamboo tray to be opened.

IMG_6543_zps96914023.jpg

I switched my camera mode from photo to video and took up position in the official Dad's video zone. (Well it was official to me anyway.) Below is a 3 min and 50 second video clip (just click on the picture right under here) showing the oysters being opened and the little ceremony they do.

YouTube Link

If you have trouble hearing it, want my thoughts as things were happening, or just aren't that interested in watching other people's vacation videos (I feel you, I really do), you can find the summary below.

_________

With their two ugly oysters sitting out and ready to open, Anna started by explaining the process a bit and then opened Tahlia's oyster first. As soon as she opened it up, her eyes lit up and she rolled out a mother of a pearl. She complemented Tahlia on picking out such a big pearl and told her she did a great job.

Two thoughts then crossed my mind at roughly at the same time. "Hey that's really cool man!" and & "Oh Lord, PLEASE let Hailee get a good one too." Because you parents know how it is with sibling rivalry. And let me tell you, I've seen wars erupt over the perceived injustice of the level of milk in two identical cups. I didn't want this really cool moment to be ruined by the green eyed monster.

Have you ever had those times when you think God is laughing at you? Not a like a mean "You're an idiot" laugh, more like an "If you only knew what I had in store!" laugh. I'm pretty sure that in those few moments, I had some divine chuckles thrown my way.

Anna picked up the second oyster, had the girls count in Japanese while she commenced to shucking, and then made a sad face at Hailee. In a very serious tone, she called Hailee "Princess" and told that her sister had been very lucky to get a pearl so big and rolled out a small pearl from Hailee's oyster. Then her eyes lit up and she showed Hailee the oyster shell. Tahlia saw it first and yelled, "Hailee, you got two!" Then Anna rolled a second pearl out of the oyster.

I smiled and kept filming, remaining the stoic, calm and collective DIS Dad. But I am compelled to admit what the dim lighting of the store had concealed. I was a bit misty eyed at that point. It all turned out far better than I could have imagined. That both girls had a special moment full on made my night.

They measured the pearls and Tahlia's was 8.5mm. She got a second kudos for having the biggest pearl of the day. Hailee's were then measured and we found they were a perfect set, both being exactly 6.25mm.

Anna then finished up the ceremony by banging on the drum, and (after the video stops) gave them some instructions on caring for their pearls.
_________

Once we had the bagged pearls in hand, it was time to move over the jewelry case. We knew if we brought home the pearls as they were, they would sit in a drawer for untold years and eventually wind up lost. Part of my souvenir master plan was to have them made into jewelry while at Mitsukoshi so that the girls could wear them during our trip. Finding the "perfect" settings was not what one would call an expeditious adventure, but we had plenty of time before Illuminations and the girls were having so much fun, that I was happy to step back and let them browse.

They eventually settled on a pair of earring settings for Hailee, and pendant setting & chain for Tahlia. Though they didn't coordinate their "picking out" efforts, the girls managed to come away with matching pieces. (There is a rumor floating around that First Lady Biscuit helped out, and thought a matching set would be great in case she needs to borrow them sometime. But that's JUST a rumor mind you, and I already clobbered the guy spreading it around.) Once we paid, the cast members took the bagged pearls and the settings and moved them over to the other side of the booth where the jewelry makers were working.

Mitsukoshi does not have resort delivery for the pearl settings and they close at nine so there was no coming in after Illuminations. We waited it out and passed the time by browsing around the store and watching the girls' jewelry being made.

Our official pickup time was 8:50, but Cast Member Yuki was fast and they were ready closer to 8:40.

IMG_6546c_zpsf98f59bb.jpg

As we were picking them up, the cast members switched stations and Anna moved over to the jewelry making area. She once again congratulated the girls and told them they were very lucky.

Not lucky really, just blessed.

I took a couple of photos there, but they did not turn out well, so here is one I took last night that shows what they look like.

IMG_8930_zps11a03da7.jpg

We admired the new jewelry a few moments before First Lady Biscuit commandeered them for safe keeping.

For the curios among you, Tahlia's pendant was $29.00 and the chain she picked was $15.95. Add that to the cost of the pearl and hers was $61.95. Hailee's earing settings were $35.00 which when added to the cost of the pearl made them $52.00. While they weren't exactly cheap, when you compare it to the cost of 3-4 little gifts, it is actually not bad at all. And it made for an amazing memory.

It was nearing time for Illuminations, so we left Misukoshi and headed out to the lagoon. Since it was closer to go back the way we came than to complete the circle around the lagoon, we turned left to see if we could find a decent viewing spot. The stage show in Morocco had ended so we had an easier time getting through. Just past the pavilion, in the area between Morocco and France, there was a small sidewalk cutting down by the lagoon. There were very few folks down there so we joined their ranks and grabbed some railing.

We would later discover that some friends of ours were stationed just on the other side of France, but we missed hooking up with them. (I blame them totally, just so you know. After all, they had thrown down some mess earlier that afternoon about not going back to the parks that night and then tried to play it off as a last minute thing. It's okay Connie. I know when I've been blown off. Fortunately I'm not a bitter man. I just kept that spare bag of Julio's chips I had in the van to myself that's all. SIDEBAR - yes I did bring a crapload of food with us including a well stocked supply of chips and salsa. Wow. I've digressed from my digression. Back to the fireworks.)

By the time we got into position to view the show, the pre-music was starting up "Appalachian Sunrise". For those that wish to listen along, I once again recommend going to D-Cot and pulling up "Epcot - Parades & Shows - Illuminations ~ Reflections of Earth ~ An Evening at Epcot." Or you could acquire all of the tracks individually as well as the tracks for the alternate pre-show soundtrack & the shows itself, and then load them all up in iTunes. Some of the tracks are hard to find though so you may need to do as I did and invoke the kindness of some Swedish relatives and have them sent across the pond.

There was a breeze blowing that night and I was VERY excited for the start of the show. The girls really didn't remember it that well from our previous trip, plus we had watched it the rain the last time. Before long, we were welcomed and invited to gather around the fire and show share a story.

I didn't have my tripod or monopod with me, so I shot some pics as well as I could shooting handheld and enhanced them in Photoshop. (Actually most of the pics on this report have some sort of Photoshop touch-ups. Some of are minor things, some are major.)

After taking a opening burst of quick pics, I spent a good amount of time just watching and enjoying the show and occasionally popping up and shooting off a half dozen bracketed pics in rapid fire, hoping one would turn out.

Once the show ended, we had LONG way to go in order to reach the van. We took our time moseying through the park and by the time we made it to the front, the crowds were fairly sparse.

We were tired and worn out from the three day drive down, the insane amount of walking, and the lack of sleep. As we made our way back to the van, I was more than ready to shower the day away and enjoy some Disney sleep. Yet, I was still full on giddy about the night we had spent together as a family.

On our way out to the parking lot, we made contact with Nick and Tammy's crew and planned to drop by their room to check out their digs. Everyone was eager to share their stories of the first day, and I was anxious to get their take on Chef Mickey's. Little did I know as I drove back to The Lodge that there was another surprise in store that night. And this one, was going to blow my socks off.

You had my eyes watering with your pearl story as well! What a wonderful idea for a magical souvenir and a memory that they will never forget. :lovestruc

And I hear you on the wars started over "I want that cup, cereal bowl, plate... etc." and "She/he has more!" I feel like putting the kids in solitary while they eat sometimes!! Is that wrong?:rolleyes1

Great photos of Illuminations. Can you believe we stayed at the Yacht Club and were at WDW for 10 days and I didn't see Illuminations once? It just doesn't hold the same draw as Wishes for me.

Can't wait to hear what surprises are up next.

Enjoying your trip report!

My daughter still enjoys pick a pearl. She's got three necklaces from this and already knows which setting she wants when we go back. Pick a pearl is something we do together. I've got a ring, a pair of earrings (twofer!), and an unset pearl.

You are correct about this making a good souvenir. My daughter's pearl necklaces do not sit in a box gathering dust. Although she has many necklaces, "The Pearls" have a day out many times a year!

Wilderness Lodge is my husbands favorite resort! You got a great room!

More updates please!

I had a feeling it was going to be pick a Pearl!

As soon as she said that the pearl was large in the video, I grimaced. I was hoping there would be just as magical reveal for the second one, but I never expected two! It pretty much doesn't get more perfect than that!

What a lovely night!

A surprise to knock your socks off!?!?!?! Hmmm. I wonder what it could be!

great job with the surprise! I did guess it based on your clues - though, the fact you were already in EPCOT helped out as well.

We did the pick-a-pearl for the first time our last trip as well and I thought it was really great! And fully agree with you that once you add in the jewelry it isn't exactly cheap, but you figure a stuffed animal and t-shirt is gonna run you $40+ as it is so really isn't bad compared to that

That is an amazing coincidence that they wound up with a matching set, just stunning ;)

wow, a digression from your digression - you are a professional!

I think a lot of us do the "get a couple of pictures at the beginning and then just take in the rest of Illuminations" ... just a great, great show.

Glad you had such a great family day!

I'm glad that Pick-a-Pearl went so well. Somewhere along the line in getting to the chapter I saw the "you're lucky" quote and I was worried that one sister wound up disappointed. (From one dad of 2 girls to another!)

And yes, picking ugly oysters works! :thumbsup2

What a wonderful surprise. I am sure it was a ton of fun. WOW about both girls getting so lucky, that could have turned not so nice fast. And I love that the set is matching (Great job, Lady!).
Lovely pics of Illuminations.
And you sure do how to bring the cliffhangers, GB! Can't wait for the next update.

It was one of my favorite moments from the trip. And DEFINITELY worth the cost IMHO.

And I hear you on the wars started over "I want that cup, cereal bowl, plate... etc." and "She/he has more!" I feel like putting the kids in solitary while they eat sometimes!! Is that wrong?:rolleyes1
Amazing what battles a single morsel of macaroni can cause isn't it?

Great photos of Illuminations. Can you believe we stayed at the Yacht Club and were at WDW for 10 days and I didn't see Illuminations once? It just doesn't hold the same draw as Wishes for me.
:faint: It grows on you.

Can't wait to hear what surprises are up next.
I definitely won't go as long between updates.

Enjoying your trip report!
Thanks, Howdy, and :welcome:

That is too cool! We've talked about doing this again. It really was an attraction unto itself.

You are correct about this making a good souvenir. My daughter's pearl necklaces do not sit in a box gathering dust. Although she has many necklaces, "The Pearls" have a day out many times a year!
Both of our girls wear them regularly. (Though we typically don't allow them to bring them to school except for picture day. Once they are a little older, we'll probably relax that restriction.)

Wilderness Lodge is my husbands favorite resort! You got a great room!
Mr. Rozz is a wise man.

More updates please!
Soon and very soon. (Hopefully by the end of the weekend.)[/QUOTE]

I had a feeling it was going to be pick a Pearl!

This just started playing in my head:
I gotta feeling that tonight's gonna be a good night
That tonight's gonna be a good night
That tonight's gonna be a good, good night
A feeling that tonight's gonna be a good night
That tonight's gonna be a good night
That tonight's gonna be a good, good night

I know! I was like  :worried: popcorn:::yay::woohoo:

What a lovely night!
It was awesome!

A surprise to knock your socks off!?!?!?! Hmmm. I wonder what it could be!
I'll give you teaser...it involved French Cheese. (As all the best surprises do.)

Indeed. We would have spent that and more on things they'd outgrow.

That is an amazing coincidence that they wound up with a matching set, just stunning ;)
I'm still not sure how that happened. :rolleyes1

wow, a digression from your digression - you are a professional!
There has to be SOME benefit to having ADD.

I think a lot of us do the "get a couple of pictures at the beginning and then just take in the rest of Illuminations" ... just a great, great show.

I truly do love that show. And it was a very nifty day indeed.

What a wonderful surprise. I am sure it was a ton of fun. WOW about both girls getting so lucky, that could have turned not so nice fast. And I love that the set is matching (Great job, Lady!).
It was a blast! Highly recommend it!

Lovely pics of Illuminations.
Thanks BSG!

And you sure do how to bring the cliffhangers, GB! Can't wait for the next update.
Hopefully it won't be too long. Working on the next one.

I'm glad that Pick-a-Pearl went so well. Somewhere along the line in getting to the chapter I saw the "you're lucky" quote and I was worried that one sister wound up disappointed. (From one dad of 2 girls to another!)
Amazing how sisters can go from besties to beasties in the blink of an eye. Sometimes BECAUSE of a blink of the eye.

And yes, picking ugly oysters works! :thumbsup2
All those years of DIS'ing was bound to pay off!

I will admit at first I was  with the clues. I let it marinate a minute or two and then :duck: it almost hit me. :lmao:

Great job torturing them for years to get to this point.

What a magical time for both girls. Yes I was holding my breath when you said the first pearl was pulled out huge and the hopes that the second oyster held something just as special.

Great work on a matching set. :worship: They each have something individually unique yet can make a special set together.

IllumiNations is my favorite and while I especially love the beginning and the end I had no idea the pre-show music was "Appalachian Sunrise".
That music really sets the tone for the special presentation to follow.

I can only imagine the exhaustion after the first day. All the excitement and finally the knowledge that all the hard work and secrets have paid off and you had a fabulous first day, yup fall into bed and dreamland.

More surprises!!!! I look forward to reading all about it. :goodvibes

What a great surprise! That's something so special to always remember their trip. Such an amazing start! Looking forward to more:)

I can't emphasize enough how much I loved that experience. Definitely recommend it!

That's the final track in the pre-show music. I finally managed to collect all the songs for iTunes. Some I was able to purchase as tracks, some I had to get on CD from relatives who live in Sweden. (Several Swedish/European artists.)

Previously on Biscuit's Grand Adventure: Memories were made, Fireworks displayed and the contents of oysters made me giddy.

Following a day of endless Epcot ambulation, I found myself wearily piloting the Blue Beast down Ep-Kit drive. It was a fairly short hop up to the MK parking lot, and seeing our resort parking tag on the dashboard, the cast member at the toll plaza waved us through.

A moment later, we were pulling into our resort. There are truly few things in life as nifty as turning right onto Timberline Drive on the first night of your trip. Arriving at the gate, I scanned my Magic Band and smiled as the bar raised to let us in.

I felt bad about dragging my poor wife halfway around the lagoon and back, so I did the gentlemanly thing and dropped the girls off under the portico. Heading down the hill, I started searching for a spot to park and am pretty sure I drove half way to the Magic Kingdom before I located one. My climb up the hill (does that parking lot actually get steeper as the day progresses?) was made all the more difficult by the two liter soda bottles I had stashed under each arm. Plus, I was schlepping both our ungainly backpack and my camera bag. To the casual observer I no doubt looked like a fat hairless husky hauling a sled full of supplies back to base camp.

I finally made it inside The Lodge, gulped in a few lung-fulls of gloriously chilled Disney air, and once again admired the lobby. Unlike earlier that afternoon when the crowd noise was over the top, the atrium was empty and quiet. I could hear the area music clearly playing, and I found myself thinking "I don't think I could ever stay anywhere else."

I caught the elevator up to the fifth floor, and headed around the bend to see Nick and Tammy's room. The girls were already admiring the bunk beds, and I set about finding an empty cup & the ice bucket. Fetching a hearty batch of frozen floaters from the machine down the hall, I poured myself a glass of Dr. Pepper and started slamming down shots of syrupy goodness like a man half-possessed. After quenching all of the parts that were parched, I headed out onto the balcony to check out the view. (A task not easily accomplished in the dark I discovered.)

The girls showed off their pearls while we looked at all of the photos from Nick & Tammy's night at Chef Mickey's. I was eager to hear what they thought of the place, and we once again gathered around the fire to share a story. (Okay technically the fire was the flickering glow of The Disney channel, but it was all we had.)

Here is how their evening went down:

After our families parted ways at Roaring Fork, the N&T family changed clothes and headed down to the Silver Creek Springs pool to enjoy some quality slide time. They greatly enjoyed it and reported both the slide and the hot tubs were nifty things. Enjoying some fun in the sun, they eventually returned to the room to get ready for Chef Mickey's.

Now here is where some of my "expert guidance" went awry.

In coaching them on getting from the Wilderness Lodge to the Contemporary, I recommended that they get to the boat dock about an hour before their reservation time. This allowed up to 20 min for a boat to arrive, 10 for it to unload / reload, 10 to cross to Fort Wilderness, 10 to unload and re-load, and 10 to cross to The Contemporary. Based on what I'd read it made perfect sense.

Yet, as is often the case, reality didn't quite line up with what was posted on the internet. As they were walking down the wooden planks of the dock, a boat was heading towards them. They only had a couple of minutes to wait before it pulled in.

DSC_04701024x685_zpsb787c7dc.jpg

The folks who were on the boat stayed on the boat, and Nick's crew was the only group getting on. They were seated and moving fairly quickly. Rather than crossing over to Fort Wilderness, they went straight from the Wilderness Lodge to The Contemporary.

And so it was that Nick and Tammy found themselves at Chef Mickey's with a good 40+ min to spare.

DSC_04801024x685_zpsa8c7d068.jpg

OOPS! Sorry y'all!

On the plus side, they had plenty of time to explore the area before they were called back to be seated.

My nieces Nikki & Sammie were getting really excited seeing all of the characters and couldn't wait to finally make it inside. They wound up being seated about ten feet from where we sat on our 2005 trip which I found humorous. They wound up jumping into a napkin waving ceremony almost immediately, then hit up the buffet.

I was happy to discover that their girls enjoyed meeting the characters at Chef Mickey's, and my brother-in-law enjoyed the meat and Parmesan mashed potatoes. (As all good brothers-in-law should.) It wound up being a trip highlight for them which made me happy.

After our own opening night celebration at Chef Mickey's on our last trip, I really hated to miss this one. Particularly after the special character moment which ended that afore mentioned experience. (What is it about seeing my daughters have "magical" moments that makes me all sappy?) I really wanted their family to experience something similar and to have a great time. I could not be happier that they came away with great memories of the meal.

After dinner, they again had a short wait time for a boat back to the Wilderness Lodge.

DSC_05061024x685_zps5cc6a5c5.jpg

Returning to their room, they got the girls ready for bed while waiting for us to arrive from Epcot. Once we all met back up, we spent about an hour hanging out and enjoying our time together. The cousins spent most of their time sharing their excitement while sitting up on the top bunk. After looking over photos, we adults sat around the table / bed and finished catching up on the joys of travel and our first day impressions. (I just called myself an adult. That's new.)

We soon turned our attention to our mutual new-found love of The Lodge. I loved that our room had a courtyard view and was close to the boat dock. I also loved that Nick and Tammy's room was so close to elevators, bus stop, and parking lot, & the girls really loved the bunk beds. One of the things that we noticed though was the noise level. Down where our room was at, even though we had the pool and the music right outside, we never did hear it during our stay, nor were we disturbed by noises coming from the door. Nick and Tammy reported that there were several times that they could hear the hoopla going on downstairs in Whispering Canyon, particularly in the morning hours when they were still trying to sleep. (Apparently "WE NEED KETCHUP!!!!!!!" is not something a fellow wants to wake up to every day.)

Fatigue was quickly setting, so after a bit, we started preparing the girls for departure. After finally prying the cousins apart and promising to meet back up the next morning, it was time to say goodnight, and enjoy some Disney sleep. Stepping out of their front door, I crossed to the railing and took a couple of quick shots of the view below.

Once the girls finished up their good night hugs, we headed off to our own room. On the 5th floor, (unlike the 3rd) the hallway runs all the way from the lobby rooms down to the courtyard wings. Rather than take the elevator to the lobby, walk around by Roaring Fork and take the other elevator up to the third floor, we decided to just walk around the fifth floor hallway to the courtyard elevator. After wondering aloud more than once "Just how big is this place?!" we finally made it to our beaver-adorned lift carriage.

Arriving on floor number three, we had another walk down the hall before finally arriving at our room. Holding my Magic Band against the door, I was happy to see Mickey spin and turn a bright shiny green.

After turning on the lights and heading inside, I at first looked at the beds. I had called and requested turn down service, (which is a free service available by request at The Lodge by the way) and was happy to see mints waiting on our pillows.

Turning around, I noticed something in front of the TV.

Something that hadn't been there when we left.

Upon closer examination, we saw that it was a canvas bag in a Mickey motif with our name on it and a card attached. Pulling out the card and reading the contents, I found it was from some Disney friends. (Friends whom it is been great a joy and honor to get to know over the past few years.) Opening up the bag we found that it was filled with all sorts of delectable treats: candies, fruit, crackers, pretzels, popcorn, drinks, even some French cheese. (Which I found highly amusing by the way.)

We were all amazed that this family wanted to bless us in this way, and it was the fantastic end to an amazing first day. As the girls started diving into the spread and getting sugared up, I whipped out my phone and let my buddy know how much we appreciated it.

After enjoying a late night snack, hopping in the themed shower to wash the park off my general person, downloading and backing up the camera card, plugging in the gazillion chargers we had with us, setting out clothes for morning, and setting an alarm, I took a final gander at the room, and flipped out the light. Then I realized I had forgotten to brush my teeth and tried to make my way over to the bathroom without turning back on the light so I wouldn't disturb First Lady Biscuit.

It was working well until I smacked my toe on the chair, hollered and disturbed her anyway. After a hearty mouth scrubbing, I returned to bed minty fresh but partially wounded. Fortunately by morning, my toe would have forgotten the woes of the night and it would be time for our first full day in the park.

And oh what a day that would turn out to be.

But I'm getting ahead of myself.

Closing my eyes, and saying a prayer, I shimmied down into the pillow and was out almost instantly.

sounds like a great end to the first day! And if the "worst" of following your advice is that they got to Chef Mickey's 40 mins early, I'd say you did pretty good!

Glad they enjoyed Chef Mickeys! A few trips ago friends came with us and I was very nervous that they wouldn't like some of our recommendations, etc. - so glad this worked out for all parties involved.

That was super nice of your friends to send you that give bag (does seem like the brie was a little out of place though) - and wonderful surprise to end that first day!

It was a nifty way to wrap it up, for sure!

It's tough sometimes as you never know what someone is actually going to experience. (Hence part of the frustrations with Disney's quality inconsistencies of late.

We were completely blown away! It was really cool. The french cheese cracked me right up. They had some crackers in there that were pretty durn tasty. Though my new favorite thing is the Goofy's Candy Company Sour Cherry thingermabobs.

Despite it still being warm out and us being on a time table, it was a still great evening for stroll through Epcot. (Really when is it NOT a great evening for a stroll around Epcot? Oh wait. I answered my own question a few days later. But that’s getting ahead of myself.)

I can't imagine there was actually an answer to that question.

Off Kilter was playing their last set of the evening as we rounded Canada, and I am sad to know that this was my last time ever seeing them there. But hey, at least we now have a group of lumberjacks hosting a log sawing contest.

Progress.

(cough)

Yeah.

Once the girls figured out what we were actually doing, they were insanely excited.

They look excited don’t they?

About as excited as mine get anymore.

Two thoughts then crossed my mind at roughly at the same time. “Hey that’s really cool man!” and “Oh Lord, PLEASE let Hailee get a good one too.” Because you parents know how it is with sibling rivalry. And let me tell you, I’ve seen wars erupt over the perceived injustice of the level of milk in two identical cups.

:lmao::rotfl2::rotfl: It's funny because it's SO true.

Have you ever had those times when you think God is laughing at you?

Yes! I call them "weekdays".

Not a like a mean “You’re an idiot” laugh, more like an “If you only knew what I had in store!” laugh.

Oh. I wish that happened more often, actually.

Tahlia saw it first and yelled “Hailee, you got two!” Then Anna rolled a second pearl out of the oyster.

Wow! Fantastic!

I smiled and kept filming, remaining the stoic, calm and collective DIS Dad. But I am compelled to admit what the dim lighting of the store had concealed. I was a bit misty eyed at that point.

Probably a lot of dust in the store, bothering your eyes.

I didn’t have my tripod or monopod with me, so I shot some pics as well as I could shooting handheld and enhanced them in Photoshop. (Actually most of the pics on this report have some sort of Photoshop touch-ups. Some of are minor things, some are major.)

These look really great!

I finally made it inside The Lodge, gulped in a few lung-fulls of gloriously chilled Disney air, and once again admired the lobby. Unlike earlier that afternoon when the crowd noise was over the top, the atrium was empty and quiet. I could hear the area music clearly playing, and I found myself thinking “I don’t think I could ever stay anywhere else.”

Quite possibly the best area music in all of WDW.:thumbsup2

And so it was that Nick and Tammy found themselves at Chef Mickey’s with a good 40+ min to spare.

OOPS! Sorry y’all!

Much better than being late!

Aw, come on! That never gets old!

WOW!!! Totally hooked you guys up.

What a great start to a trip! That weird exhilaration/exhaustion that you feel at the end of the first day is one of my favorite feelings!
