We will be celebrating my DW's birthday in WDW in a few days, and I was wondering if there was anything special that the Poly could do, like decorate the room, etc. If so, should I call ahead and say that we are celebrating a birthday, or should we tell them when we are checking in?

What has the Poly done for birthdays?

if you want them to do something. then you need to do something.

send her flowers, have a cake made, etc.

they might send some ballons with the cake - but no guaranteeds.

lots of time if you get a nice cm checking you in - they will send something.

but lots of time you won't get anything.

so as I say do it yourself.

I'll second the do-it-yourself b-day room decorating. You could send her out for coffee, or buy the refillable mugs, etc. While she's out, put up the window clings that you have snuck into the luggage, and your specially created birthday signs. You could have the disney florist deliver some flowers.

When you get to the parks, stop by guest relations and pick up the birthday button. It's a lot of fun! The CMs and guests will wish your DW happy birthday.

We will be celebrating my mom's 75th birthday at Disney on July 12th. What I did to make her day special was to make reservations at Le Cellier and order her an 8 inch cake to be delivered to our table after we eat. Also, I bought four t-shirts that say something like - Wish our Gram a Happy Birthday Today - and we are wearing them to the parks on her special day.

I'm not sure how much you are wanting them to do for her, but we have been several times when it was my mother's birthday and when we got back to the room that day AFTER mousekeeping had been there and cleaned, we found that they'd left a balloon and a card 'signed' by Mickey and the gang.
You can probably check at the front desk to see if they still do this. Just be sure they note it...w/ my mother, her name was on the rooms so they had all her info.

Also, be sure that you go to guest services and ask for a birthday button for her to wear, every CM she passes will tell her Happy Birthday.:thumbsup2

Another thing you may want to try, we have found that if we hop on a bus with a friendly, fun driver, we have told them and they've had the whole bus sing to her before.

Hope you guys have a blast!

If you had more time to plan, the folks over at Gifts of a Lifetime do offer a room decorating service. Sarah does a beautiful job on gift baskets, but again I'm not sure if she can do something in a week. You might have to contact the Disney Florist if you want to guarantee that something is done for her. The Poly has room service, so you can arrange for a birthday cake to be delivered to your room. I believe they decorate the table with party supplies. Contact them at this number 407-824-2000 and ask for private dining. They usually need 24-48 hours notice, depending on what kind of cake you're looking for. I love the t-shirt idea from Linda T. If you're handy on the computer, you can design them yourself and print them onto iron-on transfer paper. It's pretty easy to use and you only need to pick up some white or colored t-shirts to iron onto.

Aside from that, you can take your chances that the resort will recognize her special day. Unfortunately, it's a busy time of year and with all the AKL re-locations to this resort, I'd kind of figure that chances might be on the low side for receiving complimentary items.
