Birthday Pin "Grey Area"?

I loved wearing my birthday button when DH and I went last year for my birthday trip. We were almost 2 weeks later than my birthday, but couldn't get away until then because of school starting and my mother's work schedule since she was watching our kids!!

I wore my button on one of the days that we were there and had many birthday wishes. It was really fun. I didn't wear it any other days we were there and had a CM tell me I should have worn it the whole time because it was my *birthday trip*. It now sits up in my drawer and I see it regularly and remember how much fun we had on our trip!!

When we went in March I saw a CM wearing a birthday button and made sure to wish him Happy Birthday, since it was so fun to have all those b-day wishes when I went. :woohoo:

Get your son the b-day button and have him wear it the whole time. Especially if he would love the good wishes.

:rotfl:

That would be too funny

I think so! I mean, of course, it wouldn't be funny every day because everyone should be able to feel special for the day - especially kids - but it would give me a big chuckle if every single person had to wear a Happy B-day button in the park. The CMs' heads would be spinning and their eyes would be glossing over with confusion:confused3 :rotfl: !

I said in one post yesterday, wearing these birthday buttons seems to promote friendliness, good cheer, good vibes and positive energy amongst people in the parks and all that. How could that possibly be a bad thing? And the kids are expectedly thrilled with the attention and 'talking to Goofy' on the phone, or maybe the occasional free sundae at a restaurant or something, but the jaded, seasoned adults seem to get an extra little thrill from it too! So it is spreading happiness all around!

Aw darn! We went on DS's b'day, which was the 26th of May, and that day wasn't blacked out for Deluxe. I really wanted to go the evening before, but we dealt with having dinner, my guys went for a swim, and I went and met a couple Dis'ers, so it was OK to not go in. :goodvibes

Bumber I wanted to go but we both had to work the next day and since it's so long a drive we would have had to leave on Monday. I was bummed but now I figure I get a make up trip for MY birthday...right? ;)

My birthday is on 10/10, but we don't even check into the GCH till 10/11. I never even consider getting a birthday button because I wouldn't want to take advantage of the system. Besides, when someone to wear a button when it is not their birthday it just makes it a little less special for those whose birthday it actually is. If 1 out of every 365 people at DL will be celebrating a birthday, can you imagine how many people can "almost" be celebrating a birthday? However, in situations like your son's, I'm sure those whose birthday it actually is wouldn't mind sharing their special day!!!! :thumbsup2

BTW.... I am a systems administrator that does a lot of computer programming not unlike your DH. :rolleyes1

How is it less special?? My DD12's bday was on the 8th, we drove down on the 8th and went to the parks on the 9th. It made it no less special for her knowing it was a day late she was just very excited to get to go!

I tell everyone I notice wearing a button Happy Birthday, I love doing it and every CM I see with one on gets a special wish from me. And sometimes they get a bonus....LOL You know, a pin, a hug, an autograph....ok, just kidding about the autograph. lol I gave one CM a cookie once....LOL

I dont know about wearing it TWICE a year. Wearing it once a year simply b/c you had a birthday SOMETIME that year is a stretch even for me, but twice is definitely too much, thats just overdoing it and taking advantage of the system imo. (especially for an adult) :thumbsup2

Personally, I would only wear it if my birthday was actually in that month or within 30 days before/after you are there (I dont think it needs to be on the EXACT day though!) And I would definitely stretch it a bit if it was for a child's birthday, especially if you are going specifically to celebrate the birthday.

I think you should DEFINITELY get a birthday pin for your son!!!

O.k. I think that I am confused now, but that is o.k. I will figure things out.
One thing that I do know, is that I do not wish to carry tortillas all the way back to Northern Ca. he he! ;) seriously. Now, if they were delicious chocolate cookies, I can figure out a way, to make that room! ;) ha.

They are the freshly made tortillas from their little factory. You normally get just one per person, and they are absolutely delicious. We eat Mission tortillas all the time, but the fresh-made ones are incredible.

So when they notice the button, they'll get a pack of 12 (I guess) of them (they are small tortillas, more of the soft taco size than the burrito size if you're familiar with Mission sizes) for the b'day person. They can be used for snacking later. We did end up, gasp, throwing about half of them away b/c we just weren't hungry enough to eat all of them, and after a few days of forgetting to put 'em in the fridge we were a little scared of them.

You know the thing about wearing the button is that if the person grows tired of well wishes, they can take off the button. On DS's b'day we had planned to hop, and I figured DS wouldn't want to wear it every day. We were moving slower than expected and didn't hop, so we decided that the 26th was his DL b'day and the 27th could be his DCA b'day. That worked for about half of the 27th, and after that DS knew it wasn't his b'day anymore and was tired of it. So he took it off.

I had the same feeling in September when we were celebrating our anniversary (we checked in to PPH exactly a month after our anniversary, and we had NOT celebrated it in August so it was a true celebrating in Sept). Wearing the button on the 18th was fine. Hubby wanted to wear them on the whole trip so on the 19th I did, but it got old hearing the well wishes when it wasn't the day and we had already had our day of celebration.

Let me tell you, having one partner wear the HA button while the other isn't sure causes strange facial expressions on people who notice!!!!:rotfl:

Your kids are little cuties!

Anyway, I wouldn't wear a button just because I had a birthday sometime that year - everyone has a birthday every year - but if my trip is specifically FOR my (or my friend's) birthday, regardless of the date and how long ago the birthday was, and it is a celebratory weekend for that event, then I am wearing it! It clearly is not a big deal to Disneyland, as they hand them out to anyone and they don't ask for ID! As others have stated here before, they want everyone to celebrate!

That is funny bumbershoot, about the strange looks that some people can give when one person is wearing the happy anniversary pin, and not the husband or wife. he he!
Very true, one can always take the pin off, if hearing HB's gets old.
I would like to go on the tortilla factory tour, however most likely will do so, on a future trip. Tortillas, can be store out of the refrigerator, safely. I love tortillas, and would love to take a package of them, back home with me, for as long as I have enough room to do so. :)

I know what you mean - the well-wishing can get old. When we first got ours last year, we were wearing the buttons right out in plain sight. As the weekend wore on, my friend started either 'forgetting' to put hers on at all or she would put it in a sort of obscure spot on her shirt that could not easily be seen. At one point I was sitting in the lobby of the GCH by the big Christmas tree, on Saturday night right before Christmas, and I had already moved my button closer to my hip because it was doing battle with my purse strap during the day and I thought it would fall off! I was twisted in the chair in such a way where that the button was almost buried in the seat. When the Christmas Carolers came over to perform for everyone and do their little take-requests set, one very sharp-eyed Caroler somehow noticed my button, which I didn't realize. I saw him nudge the guy next to him and wink, and then they all sidled over in perfect formation to sing happy birthday to me! Not only was I very embarrassed, but I was amazed at how this one guy could spot my button smooshed between my hip and the chair, but he did it! Not sure why he was looking at my hip, but after all the food I had been eating, I imagine one could not help but notice my ever expanding hips!

This thread and the message behind it reminds me of an old 'I Love Lucy' episode. Lucy and company are visting Italy, and are staying in a hotel with endless stairs. When she and Ricky get a call from their little son back in the USA, they have to climb up and down these ridiculous steps and practically pass out in order to take his call. They desperately want to speak to Little Ricky because it is his birthday and they can't be with him. Meanwhile, Lucy has befriended an Italian boy named Giuseppe, who says it is his borthday as well. So Lucy gets all these presents for Giuseppe to make his day special, and he then presents about 15 other kids to her - all of whom are having birthdays as well. He says, "Theresa? She's a her birthday, too! Paolo, she's a his birthday, too, Senora!" So, Lucy gets all the kids presents to make them all feel special. Finally, Giuseppe, distraught with guilt, confesses that it isn't any of their birthdays at all, until one of the little girls runs up and cries that it IS really her birthday. So the party goes on as planned... even though Lucy would have thrown them the party rgeardless, real birthdays or no. Sometimes, people just need to feel special!!!;)

Is City Hall the only place to get a birthday button? Can you pick one up at the Disney Hotels? We are going with our daughter the end of September. It will be on her birthday. I have never gotten one at DL only WDW.

Yes, you can absolutely get the b-day buttons at all three hotels. I think they even have them at certain shops here and there. BUT you only get the special 'phone call from Goofy' when you get the button at City Hall, so if your daughter would like that, then get it at City Hall.

And if you eat at any of the character meals, you can get buttons for those restaurants too, though you sometimes have to ask the wait person.

You can also get them at Guest Services in DCA. We got Cassidy's there because we slept late that day (we drove until about 1 am, we were tired!!) and went to DCA first. We were glad because later we found out that DL was out of them.

Last year, we celebrated my son's B-day (albeit 6 months off). He wore his button at Ariel's Grotto. The servers were extra attentive to him. They brought him a B-day card signed by Mickey and a special Tinkerbell pin. It had been a tough year, and this made his day! It is definitely worth it to get the button. Don't be shy about it!

Yes, get the pin! :goodvibes

My twins birthday is July 9. Due to work and other issues we couldn't travel to DL in July. Only during the second week of June.
Did that mean I was going to deny them the chance to celebrate their b-day at Disneyland? Nope.
We got the pins, and they wore b-day crowns that I bought them. They received many birthday wishes and had a great time.

My birthday is October 24 but we'll be in DL the 13th-19th. Just the way it worked out schedule wise. But I'll still be getting a b-day pin.

I guess it's not a big deal to me because growing up, we amost never celebrated a birthday on the actual day. If it fell on a school day, then we waited until the week-end before or after to make it easier for those in school and those working. So I suppose I'm just used to it.

Places that I know of that have the birthday buttons include:
City Hall
The Guest Services desk/kiosk near the hub
Innoventions
(usually) the Emporium

Many other shops have them if you ask.

:lmao: That would have so been us if DH insisted on wearing it the next day. We were in a store one time, DH was somewhere looking at something. I had a CM ask me where he was, like I was there alone celebrating our Anniversary. :rotfl2:

My Birthday is in March. So, we never go then due to the traffic the parks get then. So in Jan when we were there the last day, I got a pin. It was as close as we will probably ever get to my birthday. It is also a winter birthday. That is why I am keen on un-birthdays. My Dd has it even worse as it is up agianst a Major holiday so she has had un-birthdays her whole life!! An unholiday school birthday party. And then a small family party on her real day.

You have the right idea! For me, it is almost impossible to get to DLR on my actual birthday anymore. Not to mention the fact that mine is in July and it is really TOO hot for me in the parks at that time. Also, it takes some wrangling to get other people coordinated to be able to go at the same times. So usually, my 'birthday celebration' at Disneyland comes AT LEAST two months later. I didn't do anything at all on my actual b-day this year. Didn't even go out to dinner. So Disney will be it, the only thing, all year. It is nice to have a button! (Also, I can justify the expense of going to DLR in October in the first place by reminding myself that I didn't do anything for my b-day and this trip is for that purpose:thumbsup2 )
