Birthday party help? What do they mean "semi-formal"?

I was invited to go to a friends 16th birthday party, and it says "semi-formal"? I've not been to a 16th birthday yet so I'm kinda clueless.

Do they mean something casual like a sundress, like this: http://www.ae.com/web/browse/product.jsp?catId=cat1320034&productId=0393_9148 ?

MY school has semi-formal dances all the time



It means that you could so as casual as that sun dress or go as formal as the other dress. It just means dont show up in jeans and a t-shirt

Most of the girls wear short dresses or a skirt and nice tip

We have a dance soon that I have to go to that is semi-formal.
Our teacher said slacks and a nice blouse would be fine or a nice dress.
Sorry if that isn't much help. I'm not so sure myself.
I'd imagine either of those dresses would be fine.

Both dresses would be appropriate for a semi-formal event really.
I'd go with something like the sundress from AE, just because it's dressy, but not overly dressy so you wouldn't look over or under dressed.

Semi-formal typically means cocktail/party dresses for girls and black/navy dress pants and a dress shirt with tie for boys.

The second dress is closer to being semi-formal. And it's not too dressy. (Plus it's really cute - love it!)

The first dress looks like it might be a bit too casual (it's made of cotton!). However, you could dress it up with accessories and wear with nicer shoes.

I have a feeling there will be a lot of varieties of "semi-formal" at the party, so no worries.

I've been to a bunch of semi-formals, and the general dress code is more like the second dress there.
But as long as you're wearing a dress, you'll be fine.
