My son is turning 17 this year, and I want to surprise him with a really nice birthday. I'm working with his girlfriend to give him a surprise, but feeling kinda guilty about it.

The reason being is I want to take him to a Nascar racing game thing, and it's about $20 per person for 10 people. I'm not sure I can afford that, so I'm asking for his friends to help with it (no more than for their own use).

So, am I wrong to ask them for that? Or if I can't afford it I shouldn't even try? Opinions please? (donning flame retardant suit just in case).

I am not trying to flame you, but as a parent I would find it odd if my child had to pay to attend a birthday party.

I think that you should look for some less expensive alternatives.

Yah, it does seem a little tacky, but not totally off. I would think it was odd, but I would still go.
