About a week after we returned from Disney, which included a trip to bippity boppity boutique, my daughter complained that she had a sore, hard lump on her scalp. When I checked it, it appeared to be a clump of styling glue stuck to her head. When I scraped it off I discovered the hair at that spot was no longer attached to her head; she had a bald spot!
Has anyone else had this issue? Did the hair ever come back? We're at almost three months later...image.jpg

I've heard of it happening before. Since it's been 3 months, you really should take her to the doctor. Usually it doesn't take this long to grow back if it's just stressed follicles. She may have alopecia areata.

I'm pretty sure she doesn't have alopecia. This is directly under the location of the princess bun. I AM surprised that the BBB would continue to pull the hair so tight that it causes hair loss if this is a known issue.

That doesn't necessarily mean that it isn't alopecia areata. The fact that it hasn't started to regrow could be an indication of alopecia or something even more serious. Or it may be nothing. Take her to the doctor.

Thanks for your concern but that's not why I posted. I'm interested in whether others have had this happen.

Oh my goodness! I am interested to see if others have had this happen as well. DD has her first appt there in a few weeks. Yikes. I hope your daughter starts to heal soon!

yes it happens alot people have been reporting it here for years. Most say it is because their daughter had their hairdo in for multiple days. We have done BBB 2x- without a problem, but our girls have a ton of hair, I don't know if that matters but maybe girls with thinner hair, or the very young ones (3yr olds) with "baby hair" should wait until they have more? though it looks like your DD has a good amount of hair so maybe I am just over thinking! :) I have not heard of it lasting so long though. I hope she is OK and everything works it self out.

Oh my, I didn't mean she had the bun in her hair for a week! That's just when she complained. she wore the bun for 2 days. She's 12 with long, thick wavy hair. BUT that may be why they had to pull so tightly for the bun?

My other daughter got the rock star looking one with twists brought back to a pony tail they then braided and looped. She didn't have any issues. have the reports all been from the bun style?

DD5 has had the princess bun twice with no issues but the amount of gel in her hair was just crazy. Both times, I washed her hair the same day as BBB and it took a good 20mins to get the gel and glitter out.

We have never had an issue; but then they just used enough gel to get her hair to lay down pretty much the same way I do when I put her hair up and the glitter wasn't a huge amount. It's never been to the point I had to work to get it out when I washed it.

So sorry this is happening. I can't believe people still get this hairstyle if this is a known problem. I have read about it happening multiple times. Bbb is so not worth it.

I really don't know if it is just the bun or other styles. Wow for a 12 yr old I would be worried.

Yes there are many reports of it. It also happens with what I think is called Diva. It is the one with the giant poof.

It does not have to stay in overnight for it to happen.

You can google it or do a yahoo search. A lot of people say it is that alopecia but that many girls having the same issues at the exact same spot...I don't think all the girls have a disease.

Had two girls doing it 2x without this issue. 3 buns and 1 twisty braid ponytail thing. I don't think it is that well known of a thing or everyone would be talking about it with all the BBB questions.

I'd mimic showing this to a doctor, since I'd also think the hair would've started to grow back by now,

If you look closely there are a couple baby hairs starting so I'm hopeful it will at least end up smaller. I'll show her doctor but really, with the wad of hair product stuck to her scalp right there with the hairs stuck to it, I'm pretty sure there's no underlying disease process.

Luckily she has an off-center part so it's not noticeable. The only reason I noticed was because she got her hair cut in a new style last week and I was helping her separate out her new layers.

Have you considered calling disney and complaining? I wonder if they could do anyhitng, bag least get you the styling gel ingredients for the doctor or somehitng?

Fractional alipicia isn't a disease, but caused by

Traction alopecia is not a disease (unlike other types of alopecia). I doubt Disney would accept liability, but I've seen stories of this happening. Of course, it doesn't happen to everyone. My girls Irish dance, and traction alopecia is an issue to some. In order to secure the big wigs, there is a lot going on underneath with pony tails, elastics, bun form, etc., and tons of bobby pins. So far, even after many years of competing, my girls are fine, but it does happen to a lot of the dancers.

Something is wrong. You need to go to the doc. Even if you had intentionally waxed your daughters head (for some strange reason). The hair would be quite long by now or at least very noticeable. Waxing only lasts a few weeks, a month to 6 weeks max (to the chagrin of all of us women that using waxing as our primary hair removal).

To your original question, it is common on the dis to hear of hair being damaged, but it is only a very small percent of girls have the issue in the general population that have done BBB.
