Bill Cosby has more harsh words for black community

I heard parts of his speech on the news this morning and I am so glad he is speaking up. I also feel that this speech would go along well for all races. There is a huge problem in this country when it comes to our youth. I know there are plenty of parents that believe in discipline and teaching their children respect of others but doesn't it seem like it's the minority now?

It is much harder to be a good parent, it's hard hearing your kids tell you that you are mean and "if you loved me you would....(fill in the blank).

I received a great compliment from my 14 yr old the other day. I'm alwasy telling my kids they are spoiled..(because they are compared to how I was raised) She said that they are the least spoiled of all their friends....and thanks for teaching us the values of hard work and not getting everything we ask for!

I told her I'm putting that in writing so the next time she complains because I won't buy her something I'm pulling it out.

I would consider that a HUGE honor!

I totally agree, Nancy. I don't think that disciplining parents are in the minority I just don't think it's PC to talk about it anymore.

Kudos to you and every parent who follow the "Parent Power" creed. My child also respects the fact that I taught him the value of a dollar and he will be the benefactor of this for the balance of his days.

In no way shoud this thread be hijacked, but Daydreamer64, I know where you are coming from, in slightly different circumstances. There are places here in Memphis that I would love to shop at, or go out to at night for entertainment, but am not able to. There are actually neighborhoods here in town that if you are white, and you are driving around in, even during the day, that cops will pull you over. They assume that you are looking for drugs. I almost died when my husband told me this.

I grew up in the rural South, and even I have never seen ANYTHING like it. And it is hard to describe exactly what goes on without everyone yelling 'racist' which couldn't be further from the truth. Both towns I lived in before had probably a 50/40/10 mix of white/black/hispanic and everyone got along. I'm not lying. Everyone's children went to school together, everyone worked together, we were all just trying to make a living and make our community better, because the rising unemployment rates affected EVERYONE.

But now I live in a town that most of the African-American community harbors such a deep-seated hatred towards white people that it's unbelievable. And on the flip side, some of the most racist white people (almost all over 60) that I've ever met live here. It's like time stood still here since the 1960's...

Robin I LOVE your tag:D

You know dh and I really had to put our foot down when our dd15 and ds11 were younger. Between my mom, inlaws, my sister and brother our kids had Christmas morning every day of the year.

Dh and I cut it out quickly when we realized our kids developed a me entitlement. We didn't care how much the grandparents moaned about it, I was not going to stand by and let my children become spoiled rotten brats who think whatever they ask for they should get. Life doesn't work like that, at least not in this household.

They have to earn their allowance by doing chores. They start off with 25 dollars each a week, but the money doesn't touch hands until the weekend. Now if the chores aren't completed, I deduct 4 dollars that day from the person who didn't do what they were suppose to do. Many times dd's allowance was 0 and 2 weeks punishment. Her trying to defy me was not an option which she had to learn the hard way.

Of course they think I'm harsh, I'm the mean parent of the 2 whathaveyou, but we let them know (especially dd15) this is prepping them for the real world. In order to get paid you have to work and do a great job. In order to pay your bills you have to work because mommy and daddy will not be with you always.
It's about responsibilites :D

I would beg to differ on two points.

1) "Our community"? I thought we were all one community?

2) It is not just now entering "our" community. People of all races and backgrounds have been affected by the issues brought up by Mr. Cosby for years.

ITA.

Another point I want to mention is, recently Ray Charles died. I said to my husband, also an excellent musician, that it is so sad to see a fantastic musician die. I don't think my opinion is based on my age, but so many "musicians", don't take the trouble to actually learn their craft. They don't learn all the cords. They just want to get out there & play crap. They play that thrashing noise & call it music. They play (just speak to a synthetic beat) & call it rap. It's not. It's just noise. I do think Tone Loc is good as was Willl Smith with "Parents Just Don't Understand". All those thrashing bands are too numerous to mention. As long as P. Diddy or any promoter, promotes whomever they are choosing to push & put on the radios & CD's is how the genre will be going. The bottom line is money. I only use P. Diddy as an example because that is all that comes to mind right now. The money mongers are of all colors. And they don't care of the long range after effects as long as their bank accounts are busting now.

The bar is lowered all over the place. It isn't just with African Americans. I see it at work, stores. People cannot make simple change w/o a register telling them exactly what to return to a customer. At work, charts used to be in alphabetical order, always. Now, they have them alphabetically by first letter of last name only, then by colors for the letters of the first name. They used to just be alphabetical, period. That's too difficult for many people now. That is very sad.

I'm really glad that Bill Cosby spoke up & I hope many more prominent people will, that people will listen to. I can't remember who it was that said that they have been fighting this for a long time. If others of influence would climb on board, maybe someone will listen.

MScott I live about 3 hours south of you in Greenville, MS. and I know exactly where you are coming from. Our town has become around 75/25 black to white ratio and the blacks in this town hate the whites.

You can't go to Wal-Mart without hearing ""Stupid White Witch"" this or Stupid White that. You don't go out of your house much after dark here because there are countless shootings every night. Its awful!!

I think what hit home the most to me is when we went on vacation a few weeks ago and were in a Target Store somewhere in Colorado. My son looked at me and said "Wow mom, this store is so CLEAN and the people are so NICE!!!!!" It just brings it all home to me.

Its sad of me to say this but I have given up on this part of the South, racism (which is much more black on white that vice versa), hatred and a community living in the past is what we have here and I can't wait to get out.

Snoopy, I'm another one who wish the gangsta rap/thug life mentallity would go away. I know each generation is different, but I've never seen the humor in a man referring to a woman as a "bit** or ho*" regardless of color:rolleyes:

As far as the clothing, why any young man would want to wear clothes hanging off their butts is beyond me. I see this in all races which has me wondering how in the heck do these young men keep their pants from falling down:confused: :p

ON a serious note, I think alot of parents need to realize children soak up every word coming from their mouths like a thirsty sponge.
I also believe the biggest mistake a parent can make is trying to be their child's "friend". Some might dissagree, but I think in this day and age you can't be on your child's level and be the parent/disciplinarian at the same time.

Some people might say this is wrong (for each his own), but in my book I believe a parent should be the strong force parent first and the friendship should come second to a certain extent with limitations.

Again this is only my opinion:D

I bolded the part that I want to address. My niece, by marriage died this past winter. She was 10. She wasn't wearing a seatbelt because she didn't like to. Her parents didn't make her. Her parents wanted to be their kids best friends & they were. A ten year old doesn't need a friend for a parent, there's tons at school & around the neighborhood. Kids need parents to teach and guide them. On July 1st, they had a service for my niece back east. If her parents had been parents, they would have been enjoying this weekend w/their beloved daughter instead of doing a memorial in her honor. She'd be running around w/my other niece, her best friend, that lives next door, as she always did. She'd be jumping on the trampoline and riding her bike. But, instead, she's having a memorial. Parents need to step up to the plate and parent. Your kids will thank you for it when they're adults.

I too hope that clothing thing is a fad. Once they're adults, they'll get a belt & put them where they're supposed to be. That's gotta be a fad.

Axe vx ask

When I was in college in the late 80s a professor addressed this in one of my linguistics classes. Her explanation was that it often was a result of the pidgin languages African-Americans historically spoke. Gullah, for example, is a pidgin language that is a combination of English and African languages and dialects. "Ask" or even the phrase "ask me" in Gullah is ax'me, and "ask him" or "ask it" is ax'um. I was taught that this was similarly constructed in other African-American pidgin languages. It seems to be a linguisitc holdout from earlier generations. So the usage actually does have a historic base.

You're so right! You're preparing them for the real world! They'll thank you when they're adults.

Good for Bill! Somebody needs to acknowledge the problem!

I back Bill Cosby as well. Nobody's a victim because they elected to quit high school. He definitely said what needed to be said.

I agree with Bill Cosby.

I wish he would address the (extreme) rap music that degrades women (especially black women). The terms they use for women and the things they do in those videos! Whoa. I wonder why any woman would participate in such trash. I know the issue has been taken up by black college women refusing to go to the concerts on campus. But I think it would have more momentum with Bill Cosby's voice.

I do know rock music has it's history too. I don't agree with how that goes either. But the rap thing has gone way extreme. And it does noone any good except the people that are making the money.

There was I time when the videos would make me angry. I'd get angry with the rappers and everyone involved with making the video. Not anymore. Those folks are out there to make a dollar. The women in those videos allow themselves to be degraded. Now I just get angry with them. They don't have enough respect for themselves to say no.

I admire him greatly. Add New Orleans to the list. We have one of the worst school districts in the nation, finally get a school board president who is trying to make positive changes, out of the blue a couple of weeks ago, the school board tries to fire him, then yesterday news breaks of more corruption within the school board...

I think the entire state of Louisiana has the worst education system, statistically. Correct me if I'm wrong, please.

Foobs:earsboy:

I've always respected Bill Cosby, and he's just earned a bit more. I think his comments were right on.

I love how Bill always says things as they are, regardless of how much flack he'll get. He's a very compassionate man that really knows the secret to a happy life is to help others.

Look, aside from race one has to admire DR.Cosby. Yes he has a doctorate in education. What big star do you know who goes back to school at the height of his career and earns a doctorate in education. That alone gives him credibility . He is not just talking the talk. He is totally right. I do not care what anyone says, people do judge you both by how you look and how you speak. I am not speaking about race but rather how you present yourself ie dress and speak. I am referring to people of ALL races. I do not think that race is so much an issue anymore as the impression one makes.

I believe that it's an honorary degree.
