Okay, I'm all for riding bikes when and where you can, don't have a problem with them on the roadways, etc. But if I recall correctly from my bike safety info from scouts, 4-H, etc. If you are riding your bike on the road with traffic (yes you are supposed to ride with the flow of traffic, not against) aren't you supposed to yield to the same traffic laws as well. For instance if you are barreling down on a red light and it's still red, aren't you supposed to stop just as you would when driving a motor vehicle? I almost crashed into a lady on her bike who blew through a red light at an intersection I was crossing.....I had the green light......her's was red and all those cars she passed were stopped at the red light. :confused3

:thumbsup2 I agree with you 100%! I think that if bicycles are considered motor vehicles, then they should be expected to follow the same rules of the road that cars do. I have seen what you mentioned before, as well as cyclists failing to yield and other infractions. I think it's great that people are out and being active and healthy, but please follow the rules of the road so you don't get hurt!

You are correct. I bike often and only on roadways and you are supposed to bike with traffic and obey traffic laws. Ideally you also use hand signals but I usually don't unless I am trying to get someone's attention.

Cyclists need to know how to safely interact with cars and motorists need to know how to safely interact with cyclists.

Where I live, yes. The bike is considered a vehicle.

And while it isn't much consolation if you get hurt, failure for a cyclist to obey the laws...means they have no claim against the driver of the car that hit him/her.
