I was wondering if bike helmets are required at FW. My little ones have and wear theirs. I will be buying a bike for myself and need to know if I need a helmet as well.

Thanks

Pretty sure Florida law, under 12 have to wear a helmet. Regardless, helmets are a good idea at any age, I always wear mine (and not a kid). If I can do a little to prevent a brain injury, I'm all for it!:thumbsup2

Bike helmets are only required for those who do not wish to become drooling vegetables in a nursing home before their time.

Bike helmets for kids is a Florida law. Of course, like all other laws and rules, Disney security for the most part ignores any offenders.

I will not tell dd13 about the 12 and under law. She is a klutz and will be wearing one. And I don't care if it is enforced or not. If it is the law, I will be teaching my kids to obey it. None of this "it's ok as long as we don't get caught" stuff.

I see your point on me wearing one too and will think about it, especially since I haven't ridden a bike in well over a decade. LOL But, it might mess up my hair. :lmao::rotfl2: Just kidding. I guess, as the adult, I SHOULD set an example. Aw man, I guess I will be wearing a bike helmet. I think on the military bases, even adults were required to wear helmets. I know the MPs would stop and tell kids to put on a helmet, but would not tell the parents, which aggravated me.

Did I also read that our bikes will need lights on the front and back if we ride them at night? I don't think we will be riding at night. Only to do some looping. We will be taking busses to the outposts on park days.

Do we ride on the sidewalks or street? Can you tell I have not paid attention to bikers at FW?

I'm not sure about the light requirement but...I run at least one headlight on the front and TWO rear flashing tailights (no eyes in the back of my head)! You can ride on the street if an adequate sidewalk is not available but sidewalks run almost everywhere along the main streets (not loops) of FW. Main reason I do this, drivers speeding through the Fort (yes, more rule breakers) and to make sure the Disney buses can see me too.

I almost didn't take my bike on the recent trip. Although I didn't use it as much as I expected I was glad I had it when I did, didn't rent a golf cart. It's nice to ride (loop) and look around.:thumbsup2

The "rules" say you should have lights. The "rules" say you must be a licensed driver to drive a golf cart. So much for rules.

I have front & rear lights on my bike and am reluctant to ride around FtW at night on a weekend. On really busy weekends there are too many drunks driving golf carts. Best to stick to riding in daylight.

As far as where to ride - you can ride on the sidewalks, but especially on the east side (1400-1500 loop area) you will encounter a lot of pedestrians.
