I have a hot water tank.
If i meet them at 5:00 with a $20 think they will take it?

I once cut up a sofa and in 3 weeks it was gone.

where I live if you throw it in your car, you can take it to the recycling center and throw it in the recycle bin for metals for free.

Ours took a love seat once, but I agree with the suggestion to post it on craigslist. Lots of people like to use the inner tank to make barbecue pits.

Most cities provide large item pickup for free. Look in your phonebook under city services. Mine have take everything from a castiron bathtub to a lawnmower.

If you put it out I bet it will be gone before the collectors even come...people cruise around for stuff to sell as scrap metal.

We have a crappy looking truck (we call it the Sanford and Son truck:lmao: ) that comes thru every garbage day and picks up anything that looks halfway useable.

My garbage man said he would take a sofa I left out but alas, the Sanford and Son truck got there first!

They would never pick that up in my town.

Here, every house is provided with a large trash bin on wheels. The truck only has a driver and the truck picks up the bin with a claw...for lack of a better explaination. The driver never leaves the drivers seat. Nothing gets picked up that doesn't fit in the bin...nothing.

sure, for $20 they will take it.. but the money goes town in my area.

Any "white" goods you have to purchase a $20 sticker at town hall for. Furniture you need a $5 sticker. They only things mine will take twice a week is 2 garbage cans or 2 bags in not in a can

We hire private garbage haulers in our city. I pay quarterly for one barrel a week. If it doesn't fit in the barrel, they won't take it. If I have something large, I have to call them for a special pick up and they charge me extra.

When we lived in a neighboring city, garbage was included in our taxes and hauled by the city. They took EVERYTHING.

We have Waste Management, and they will literally take almost anything with the "special" pickup for heavy items. We can also do those Bagsters for a small fee if it is TOO big/heavy.

... But that is, if it lasts.

We get about 20 "pickers" that come through and take stuff.

On a pouring rain day, they took our soaked old TV. It was sitting in about 3" of slush on the side if the road. They know where to take it to make some cash! Especially if it is metal. That hot water heater wouldn't last 10 minutes on a Sunday evening on my street!

Where we live, we have to leave out big items on our regular trash day. The waste folks will make a note of it when they come by and send out a truck to pick it up the next day. I just got rid of an old set of Full size mattress and box spring that way. And one of the nieghbors did put their old water heater out (they installed a new on-demand water heater) recently as well.

I think we took our hot water heaters to recyle.

Our town will take big items if you call ahead and they will give you a day to leave them out.
I haven't used it since moving here, but DS did with a couch.

Our trash collectors would pick it up on our next scheduled day for free. However, metal items usually don't stay at the curb very long before someone grabs them. When we replaced our water heater a few months ago, it was at the curb for less than ten minutes. (It's kind of a running joke now, so we time how long it takes for someone to get the items.)

Our town picks up pretty much anything on our second trash day of the week. Furniture, mattresses, lawn mowers, you name it -- as long as it's not hazardous or something. I think they draw the line at engines and tires, but I've never tried that. They also won't pick up construction debris or that sort of thing, but they make exceptions to that after hurricanes.

Have an old tv that's going out to the curb this weekend!

They take everything. Bulk metal including hot water heaters are picked up every Wednesday. But DH usually takes things like that to a scrap metal place

In my area you'd just need an appliance sticker, I think it's $2 but it may have gone up. They send a special truck to pickup appliances/water heaters.

Same thing with furnature, you just need a $2 sticker, though the trash pickers usually beat them to it. We don't even bother with the stickers, we set out the furnature the day before trash pick up and it's usually gone in less than an hour.

We have that here but we can arrange for a special pickup. I just called and scheduled a couch to be picked up last week. I called trash company, gave them our address, they add a $20 charge to our bill and come out to pick up the item.

Our normal trash day is Wed, but they came out on Monday to pick up the couch. Told me to have it out by 6 a.m so DH dragged it to the curb before he went to work and they were here at 7 a.m. But we couldn't have just put it out.

We used to live in Ohio and we could put anything out with our trash. I put a couch out there once and they came on garbage day, tossed it in the back of the truck , ground it up and on they went.

Call your trash pick up provider. They can tell you how to do it.

We have the same automated trash bin. However, you can call and schedule an "oversized item pick-up." The website lists furniture and refrigerators as examples. You also get 4 days a year to schedule a "big trash day" where you are allowed to have more trash than fits inside the bin.

Same here and if the recycling truck comes and knocks over your garbage can then your garbage isn't getting picked up, because they won't pick it back up.
