Biggest Loser "Sizzlin' Hot" Summer Challenge

Variety is the spice of life!

farmers-market-photo1.jpg

Hello Sizzlers!!

Variety is something we need halfway through this challenge, we get stuck eating the same turkey/cheese roll up or oatmeal in the morning...time to give our body a shake up!!

QOTD: Name 3 foods you began eating as an adult that you did not like as a child, and name 3 foods that you may consider eating that you have not tried before. For all you eclectic eaters who have tried everything, teach us something!! :)

Let this Saturday be a losing day! The hardest day of the week for me foodwise...making a big salad for lunch loaded with crunchy veggies....:)

:dance3::dance3::dance3:

I keep forgetting to answer my own qotd. I could not eat brussel sprouts, broccoli, or cucumbers as a child, I still struggle with cucumbers but I don't gag if one goes down! :) I would love to be able to eat mushrooms, zuchini or squash, those I need to try and eat!

I eat a lot more fruits and veggies and fresh fish than when I was a child. For starters, squash, zucchini and salmon. I wish I liked cantaloupe better, I can tolerate it in a fruit salad but not all by itself. I read it has some great nutrients in it. There are not many foods I won't eat:cool2: Not sure I can bring myself to try oysters, escargot, frog legs:eek:

I did an elliptical workout this morning, washed all the sheets and towels and am watching the British Open now. Could do some cleaning, organizing, etc but not in the mood. DH and I are working the concession stand for the Glen Campbell concert tonight. It's a fundraiser for DS soccer club. DS not old enough to work it though. We also get to take $ off training fees. The guys did a cross fit class this morning. DS thought it was easy, DH thought it was hard.

Laura, congrats on your new job! Good luck on the bike riding. We did a lot of biking in Germany and I loved it. I want to buy a new helmet and bike basket from LL Bean.

Melissa, congrats on the 5 lbs gone.

Pamela, good luck at the swim meet. I want that crockpot oatmeal recipe too. I remember when it was originally posted here but I didn't save it. DH eats oatmeal every morning since finding out his cholesterol was 203. He was mad mine was 176 and I prob have higher BMI than him.

Jill, I am like you, the Summer is fling by and I don't have a lot to show for it!

Tracey, :grouphug: for you and your family and the upcoming decisions. Anything I can do for you down here, please let us know:flower3: I still haven't taken time to look at your Cruise pics on FB yet!

Lisa, good job maintaing at DL. Sounds like a fun trip.

Trina, good luck on your test!

Kaiti, you were a great coach!

Dona, happy birthday to your son!

Others I would like to respond to but afraid to stay on here too long and get bumped off.

We are having Chick fil a for lunch, I' m having the grilled. Tmrw we are going out on our friends boat, there will be water skiing and knee boarding and tubing. Hope I can survive. Aug 8, 2011 was my first day back working. I was hired to work on a one year project that is winding down. Next week my boss is going to meet with me to discuss " how best to use me in the future". I am really nervous for my next assignment. Work is miserable when you don't enjoy it. They've used me a lot in the past to train new people and I HATE that!!

Have a great weekend all:flower3:

Shawnprincess:

Tara, here is what I take to snack on at work

Strawberries, blueberries, raw almonds, low fat cheese sticks, laughing cow cheese wedge with whole wheat crackers, cut up celery, carrots, green and red peppers with hummus or tzatziki dip, protein bars (these can have a lot of calories though),granola, pretzels, Greek yogurt. At home I like Edys' frozen fruit bars.

Hope this gives you some ideas:)

Mushrooms, onions, bell peppers.
Food I'd consider eating, hmmm not sure on that. I'd try new fruits or veggies, but nothing too different like brains or tripe.

The QOTD is a bit tricky for me. There really isn't much I eat now that I wouldn't or didn't eat in my childhood. My mom says I ate fish, veggies no problems. I was not a picky eater. I guess that's why I was a somewhat chubby child.

There is more that I DONT eat now that I did then. :rolleyes1 Veggies are still fine I eat them all except corn but its not really a "veggie" anyway. Well on a rare occasion I'll have corn on the cob and of course we know corn is some form is in most everything. lol

I'd like to learn to cook a lot more stuff that I don't eat and didn't really eat as a child because my mom just didn't buy them or know how to prepare them, stuff like artichoke, kale and stuff like that I never get because I'm clueless on prep. They are stuff I'd like to try.

I have an announcement to make -

Sue (dvccruiser), CC (cclovesdis) and I (buzz5985) are stepping down in our roles of weightkeeper, HH, and hostess. We wanted to give plenty of notice in order for other's to step up to the challenge.

Any questions regarding any of the positions, just PM me. We will help any new people in anyway that we can.

Janis

Say it ain't so!!!!!! :sad::sad::sad:

I'm sad but I can completely understand why.

Thanks to all of you for your hard work and dedication.

And......... GIANT step back because sadly I don't have the time to commit to that in the fall, sports come first.

ok I must have missed something. How come all of you are leaving? That is so sad. You all will definitely be missed. Does this mean no more challenge?

I wish I had the time...school starts for us in 2 weeks and I am swamped creating 46 writing folders with over 300 pages in each...wish I could help! Hope someone has the heart and time to help!!

You all are awesome!

So very sad but understandable. You guys have done a lot.

Thank you for all that you have done. I know that it is a lot of work.

May I offer a suggestion? How about we Just have a discussion thread and not challenge. (There are a couple of other threads like this on the WISH) We can come on and discuss how we are doing and what we are doing. WE can use it to encourage each other. We could try it for the fall and see how that goes. I would be willing to moderate that without all the work of bookkeeping of weight and HH points. We could still have people doing questions of the day.

Just a thought.

They've been doing these for a long time so it's just time to pass the baton.
They will still be around, just not as hostesses.

I like that idea. It's kind of like, "we have to go home from the ranch sometime". Now it's time for us to do it on our own, and we can just check in like Bob and Jillian used to do when the contestants went home.

Well that's too bad. I appreciate all that is done to keep this going. It seems like something must have happened for all three to quit in the midst of the challenge.

I'd love to see them be able to finish out this challenge, but if that is impossible, I'm willing to take over the weight tracking. Keep me posted.

I'm pretty sure they will be finishing out this challenge, I think Janis just posted this early in case anyone wanted to step up to take the roles. It's a lot to learn so they just want plenty of notice.

I don't think anything bad has happened, CC would have told me, I think it's just time for them to step back.

Laura!!! WOW!! I know you must be thrilled!!! Sometimes it's not the money that counts but all the other perks...3 minutes from the house! Can you bike to work?? That would be soooo cool!!! So excited for you! And having a routine will make it easier to get those pounds off...:woohoo:

Congrats on the new job. Being 3 minutes from work is a great thing. I know it is not money but it does help that the commute is so short. Good luck with the bike. It should get easier.

Keep trying with the bike. IT will get easier and easier. Glad you didn't hurt yourself.

Laura, congrats on your new job! Good luck on the bike riding. We did a lot of biking in Germany and I loved it. I want to buy a new helmet and bike basket from LL Bean.

Thanks to everybody for the well wishes on the job. I am eager to get into a routine. (Before being laid off, I worked from home - so I haven't had a "real" routine in nearly five years.)

I was able to pick up a cute insulated lunch tote - I'll post of picture of it tonight.

Hopefully I'll get better with the bike. I don't think biking to work is an option - even though it is super close, I would have to cross an intersection on a road that has been named "the most deadly stretch of road in Nassau County". (Our newspaper recently did a multi-part series on the most dangerous Long Island roads for pedestrians and bikers.)

QOTD: Name 3 foods you began eating as an adult that you did not like as a child, and name 3 foods that you may consider eating that you have not tried before. For all you eclectic eaters who have tried everything, teach us something!! :)

Never ate bell peppers, eggplant and black beans as a kid - now I can't imagine not having them as staples in my kitchen.

I think I would like to try beets one of these days - I've always said "yuck", but the truth is that I've never actually tried them. For those of you who eat (and enjoy) beets - how would you suggest that I prepare them? :confused3

Making it Healthier!

best-pizza-ever.jpg

All right, sometimes just one slice of something is enough to get us over those cravings! :)

QOTD: For day to day eating, what is something you have done to a meal to make it healthier?

For me, I have tried to really watch sodium intake. I try to buy frozen vegetables (if not fresh) instead of canned ones that can have a good bit of sodium, and have stopped frying as much...I think in the past year I have bought only one bottle of wesson oil and still have half of it :) I try to stick to sauteeing with olive oil or baking.

A big thank you for our tracking crew!! WE so appreciate your time and help in helping us get healthy!!!:banana::banana:

I am not a beet person either, I know my grandmother would eat pickled beets! :) And borscht is a beet soup (Russian) I believe, but someone must have a good way to eat them, candied beets :) Me, too with the black beans, LOVE them! Still trying to get some eggplant in there...:)
