I'd like to be going to a Super Bowl Party but alas I probably won't be.
Vija all I can say is
Vija all I can say is

oh whgrn (Wendy)! What a nightmare. Hang in there, you will get it all figured out. I didn't see soy on the list. If that is okay, maybe it will help with the dairy substituting, once you get used to it. Hugs![]()
Thanks guys. It really is going to be hard, but I will manage. I'm determined to get healthy, no matter what it takes. And GG, soy is not a great option for me because I don't digest it well--never have. I'm just praying that goat's milk is ok, and then I can at least have my goat cheese.
So this weekend will be my "last hurrah", so to speak. Pizza, cheese, pasta, and then it's all bye bye, at least for now. I WILL try not to overdo it though...
This is from my WISH blog for today.
Oh my, Toto, I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore...![]()
OK, so the day started off fine. Had breakfast (Kashi, banana, and cottage cheese--remember that...), hit the gym and did 31 minutes on the treadmill--probably the last time until after surgery, since I'm very stiff and sore without the Mobic for 4 days, did some errands and came home for lunch (a hamburger, couscous and salad--remember that too...), had a lovely massage, and then...it happened.
The results of my food allergy testing arrived. And eating for me will never be the same.
For starters, the results are given a number from 0 to 6. 0 means no allergy or sensitivity. 1 means a slight sensitivity, but no big dea. 2 means sensitive, but only a problem if it's something I eat all the time. 3 is very sensitive. 4 is allergic. 5 is very allergic, and 6 is extremely allergic.
Well, who knew I'd end up with a 6 for egg whites??? Yolks were only a 3, but I have been getting quite fond of my egg white omelets! So eggs are a permanent no-no for me. Not sure yet if I have to eliminate anything with the slightest bit of egg in it, or just not eat eggs.
I highly suspected that milk would be on the lsit, and it was, at a 4. So that's more than a sensitivity. Crap! I was hoping for a temporary elimination. The odd thing is that cheddar cheese and yogurt are only 2s. So maybe I can add them back in eventually?? No mention of goat's milk, so I may get to keep my goat cheese. (of course, I really like that in salads and in OMELETS, which I will NOT be eating!!) I have no idea where to go with dairy free--there really are not acceptable substitutes for me.
At 3, besides egg yolks, we have processed cheese (like American) and BANANAS. Huh? NO ONE is allergic to bananas!!! It's what they give babies as their first food along with rice! OK, banana free is pretty easy, although I will miss my favorite fruit.
The 2s that I eat all the time (and will therefore have to eliminate for a few months) include wheat bran, cheddar cheese, wheat, and yogurt. So not only dairy free, but wheat free too? Eggs, milk and wheat...what else IS there???????
Well, at least I won't have to be totally gluten-free. THAT would be a nightmare!!!
Remember I said to remember what I had for breakfast and lunch? Well, breakfast is a goner--Kashi has wheat, cottage cheese is dairy, and bananas, well, that's gone too. And lunch? Bye bye couscous. And I'll have to read labels for salad dressings. Fortunately, my 3 favorites--the organic honey mustard, my homemade raspberry viniagrette, and my homemade apple cider viniagrette, are all clean. So I won't have to give that up.
So, dinner tonight. Well, I'd been feeling icky and full ever since my snack (yogurt...), and after cooking school I came home and up came my snack, my lunch, and God knows what else. So not a big dinner night. I did eat some mac and cheese (for the last time...), and an apple. Later I will have my beloved cheerios, but I may use yogurt instead of milk. Or not....
So, I've ordered some info about food allergies and eating dairy/egg/wheat free. Like it isn't already hard inough just sticking to a food plan, now I have to do it without many of my regular choices. Milk, cottage cheese, cheese, yogurt, butter, eggs, couscous, bulghur, Kashi, whole wheat wraps, Cheerios (yup, they have wheat bran in them...), and even the healthy canola oil mayo I just got--all gone.
I will have my phone consult with the doctor from Canyon Ranch on Monday morning. Then I will cry. I will speak with the nutritionist on Thursday, and then I will REALLY cry!!!
Well, tomorrow I'm going to Mom and Dad's and I guess I'll be making a slight detour to Whole Foods. Gotta read some labels and see what I can do with this mess.
This is NOT the life I signed up for!!!!!!!

I am sure you will adjust. Quite a curve ball. You sound like you have a great attitude about it all. Thanks guys. It really is going to be hard, but I will manage. You are SO SMART, what a strategic plan all the way around. Everyone should be happy and enjoying themselves this wayI have been very good with my eating this week...we have a monthly potluck after our church service and tonight it is. i think i may pack a salad and then just pick and choose a couple things
QOTD -- my neighbor and i decided to scrapbook, i'm going to her house and we are kicking out her DH back to my house to watch the game with my DH. we are so smart
I shoveled snow and cleaned up the little bit of a mess from yesterday. Then I came inside and did my sit ups along with some weight training. I need to get my ticker going for February goals.
TAKE CARE ALL!
Wendy - Sorry about your news. I know that right now it seems shocking to you but changing your diet to avoid those foods is not the end of the world. I'm currently changing mine to avoid a lot of the same foods without having been tested. It's amazing since I've cut out wheat how much better I'm feeling. My muscles don't hurt like they did. Luckily, we have the wealth of the internet at our disposal to learn about how to eat without these foods and to obtain receipes. The one big problem is the higher cost of the other things such as different types of flour and grains. Rice spaghetti costs more than regular pasta - that's for sure. Best wishes to you this week when they provide their follow-up.
You guys are the best! Thank you all soooo much for your support! I know I can do this--it's just going to be hard for a bit.
I'd be intrested to know what things you've found to substitute. I went to Whole Foods today, and it seemed like EVERYTHING had either eggs, milk or wheat in it! My sister told me I probably need a list of what I CAN eat--it might turn out to be shorter than what I can't!![]()

Went out to dinner tonite with my parents, and my sister and her family. I had my "last supper" with pasta! I'm trying to come up with a list of questions to ask the doctor on Monday. I am sure it will help to talk with him, and maybe I'll feel a blit better after. (or maybe not!!) Meanwhile, I'm just trying to get used to the whole idea.
Good Friday morning.
Question of the Day
Are you going to a Super Bowl Party?
COngrats to all the winners this week.
You're welcome! I am becoming a firm believer that so many of the foods that we eat contribute to many of our problems. As an RN, it is difficult to use these beliefs because when I teach patients about health related issues, what I teach needs to be what is called "evidence based." In my house, we are getting rid of high fructose corn syrup, preservatives, artificial coloring, wheat and gluten. It's a slow process because I couldn't afford to throw away most of what was in my pantry. As we finish something, I will be replacing it with healthy alternatives. I am trying recipes for my own barbeque sauce, chili sauce, etc. to use for flavoring our foods. Kind of hard finding the time between working fulltime and everything else but I am determined. I am already seeing a huge difference in my 7 yr old DS who has been diagnosed with a "mood disorder" and has taken medications for several years to maintain his violent outbursts. He is so much calmer it is often unbelievable. If this works and I can get him off of his meds or on as little as possible this will all be worth it. I am also serving a lot more veggies than I used to - instead of the grains and potatoes, so that most of our meal is veggies. This way we have something that helps fill us up. I'm glad you have a Whole Foods around you - the closest one to me is about 40 minutes away so it is a little difficult to shop there on a regular basis. I do have a great health food store that I go to occasionally that is also 40 minutes away - the staff there is very knowledgeable about their products and give many solutions. It might be worth checking out some health food stores for ideas as well.
As to your list of what you can and what you can't - sometimes, with a food sensitivity, when you've been without the product for a long time, you can occasionally handle it (or at least I remember something like that from something I read). Ask the doc or the nutritionist about it when you speak with them.
Let us know what you learn.
We actually ran out to Dick's Sporting Goods as soon as the game was over. They had said that when the Giants won, they'd reopen and stay open until midnight to sell all the Super Bowl Champion stuff. So at 10:15, after Mom and Dad left, DSis and I loaded the 3 kids into the car and off we went. (yes, I'm the totally coolest Mom on earth right now!--but I'd figured the game would go until 10:30 or 11, so it was still "early").
The kids got short sleeved T-shirts, I opted for a long sleeved one. And DS actually found me a car magnet!! Even DSis and DNiece got Tshirts--and they aren't even football fans. (well, European football--soccer...) So we will all be dressed alike tomorrow!!
I did pretty good with food today. My last kashi/cottage cheese/banana breakfast (all 3 are out as of now). A slice of pizza for lunch (I'd planned on 2, but really only wanted the one), and an apple. Dinner was my VERY yummy chili (everyone raved about it--there's barely anything left for lunch tomorrow!!) with a little cheese (for the last time) over rice, some homemade hummus that I didn't love, with raw veggies, and about 6 tortilla chips. Oh, and that one obscenely wonderful chocolate chip cookie that DMom baked fresh just for my last hurrah! And, for the last time,

my bedtime snack of Cheerios and milk. (Gosh, I'm gonna miss that!!) I was low on veggies, had almost no fat (other than in the cheese and hummus), and my water was lower than usual, but it was only one day.
Tomorrow I begin with the arduous task of starting my new life without dairy, eggs and wheat. I will speak with the doctor at 10 and ask hiim my many questions (if I remember to write them all down!)
I really feel ready for this. I'm up for the challenge. I am going to be a VERY healthy traveller when we head to Scotland in July!!! I CAN DO THIS!!!!!!
