I am terrified when it comes to roller coaster (or most rides for that matter). I truly think the dip in POTC is a "death defying drop." That is why I love WDW. There are so many rides for people like me. My DH and DD on the other hand, are thrill seekers. They have told me that BTMRR is very tame with no real big dips and plunges. I am seriously considering trying it this Christmas while we are there. I am beginning to not trust them, as they are telling me space mountain is very tame too, just fast. Can anyone help me decide? I'm getting tired of sitting around waiting for them to get off splash mountain, space mountain, BTMRR and thought that one might be worth a try (if it truly is pretty tame).

I am not a splash mt person because of the drop.......but I can truly do this ride and just a little heart pounding when we go around the corners........I think they told us to sit behind the engine and it is the least movement of all the cars in the train ride........Give it a whirl....
Like I said I do not do Splash Mt because I hate to come out of my seat but I can do this one

Ok, I am a huge chicken. HUGE! But, I don't mind the drop in POTC, and I even ride Splash Mountain. That being said, I despise BTMRR. It is not tame at all IMO. If you are afraid of rollercoasters and the "death defying drop" on POTC, you may want to skip this one. ;)

If you truly want to give it a try, my advice would be to go on the Barnstormer in Toontown first. I feel that it is similar but much shorter. I don't like it either. :rotfl: But if you like that, you can give BTMRR a shot! :thumbsup2

Just want to add that in over 30 trips, I have never been on Space Mountain. I know. Chicken. :rotfl2:

BTMRR really is pretty tame; however, if you think the drop in POTC is a death defying drop, I don't think you would like it very much. My mom, who hates roller coasters, will ride both BTMRR and Space Mountain. Neither one has any huge hills or long drops, but both use helixes to give a great effect of speed and g-forces (neither one goes over 24 mph). If you want to try one, BTMRR is the one to try (just because SM is in the dark).

They are correct in that both are very tame as roller coasters go. Space Mountain's top speed is under 30 mph, to give you an example, though it does feel like it goes much faster. "Feel"wise, BTMRR is the tamer of the two coasters. One thing that non-coaster fanatics do appreciate about BTMRR is that the track is on the mountain itself for the vast majority of the ride, not up on a wooden riser like a traditional roller coaster (which, it should be noted, is exactly all that Space is, just indoors with the lights out and star effects). BTMRR really does just feel more like a runaway mine train than a roller coaster. My mother (50's) hates coasters and rides BTMRR every trip now that I convinced her to try it. However, I would recommend skipping Space UNLESS you ride AND love BTMRR.

You should definatley give BTMRR a try it has no drops and is not too bad at all. I am not a thrill seekerand hate big drops but I love this ride makes me laugh, space mountain is a little bit worse as it is in the dark but I can manage this one too no big drops either. Hope you have fun whatever you decide :sunny:

I too am , or should I say was, afraid of Roller coasters and never went on them in my life (i am 56)
I just came back from a family trip to WDW (my 5th) and decided what the heck
I started out on Big Thunder Mountain, found it to be not to bad (there are some drops) and continued on to all the others
I never had a problem with Splash and always went on it
By the time the trip was over I went on Space 3 times, Big Thunder 4, Splash 7, Tower of Terror 8, Test Track 5, and Soarin 3
The only thing I chickened out on was Rock n Roller Coaster
All I can say is "go for it" and you won't be sorry

I do for years thought the drop in POTC was totally unnecessary - But just like you got tried of waiting for the family on a bench.

I had done Splash Mountain - Hate that drop more than anything - Thats just a sweet ride its a shame it has to have that drop too.

I went on Big Thunder and its OK - Do I love it - NO - but I love the excitement my husband and kids have when I go with them. We went to Disneyland last summer and tried Space Mountain because these Boards
said it was much tamer...Never Again in my LIfe!!

Give Big Thunder a chance - actually you need to go twice to get over the fear, but trust me - The Biggest Chicken of Chickens - It will be fun!!

I agree with previous posters. I do not ride roller coasters outside of WDW but I went on BTMRR and found it fine. I like that you don't really drop straight down but end up turning around corners when you go down.

If you do ride it, ask the cm if you can sit in the front half of the train. The back seats seem to get just a little more rough than the ones in the front.

I don't care for many coasters, but I do like BTMRR.

My mom hates all types of "thrill rides" -just keep in mind that practically everything that moves is a thill ride to her. She admitted to me that when she was little she'd sit on the swans at the merry-go-round. She was afraid of the horses because they moved up and down! :rotfl2:

Well, she decided to ride Big Thunder. I looks tame from the outside, and none of us had ever rode it, so we couldn't give her any advice.

Well, almost as soon as we took of, my mom lost it. She hung to my neck so hard I thought she would brake it while screaming STOP! NO MORE, PLEEEEASEEE!!!. This went on for the entire ride.

She was fine as soon as it ended, but she will never get on it again.

We laugh about it now, but she didn't enjoy it at all!

ETA: we were sitting way in the back, so maybe that made a difference.

I am so strange I always prepare myself for the drop on POTC, I sit all the way back and brace my feet and legs..lol
Anyway even stranger I can do TOT at MGM, the first drop always scares me (or rather waiting for the first drop) but after that Im fine its something about being closed into a room versus on a car on a little track.
My DH and kids convinced me to do Space Mt I made such a fool of myself I was scared out of my mind I really am suprised I didnt have a heart attack.
I promised my kids and DH I would ride Splash with them I hear its a really nice ride and I always hated not being able to enjoy it so I will try it this trip.
I have heard for years that BTMRR is a tamer coaster so I am thinking if I am feeling ok after Splash I will give BTMRR a try too.
Oh I also do Test Track and Missions Space (my fave) with no problem, I do get a bit nervous tho on TT when the car comes out the building..

I'm not a big fan of Rollercoasters but I love BTM. I've never made it on to space mountain yet (will have to do it in October at DLP as I have no choice and I've just discovered that one is side by side.) but BTM is a fantastic ride. I was gutted the year I was pregnant and couldn't ride it.

BTMRR is pretty tame. Trust me, if my DW can ride it... virtually anyone can!

I had never ridden any thrill rides until I arrived at WDW. We hit BTMRR, Splash Mountain and POC in less than 2 hours... and we all (ages as low as 4) loved them.

Now... DD and I went on Space Mountain, and despite the slow speeds, I can't tell you which one of us was more scared or screamed louder!! :rotfl2:

I thought I was the only chicken. First time at DisneyWorld I went on Space Mountain, Tower of Terror BTMRR. I was terrified on Space Mountain and Tower of Terror. I came off the rides shaking and feeling a little ill. BTM I think I was more shaken up then terrified. I vowed to never go on them again. Well, I think I am going to try again this time when we are there in September. I have been searching on line to see if there is an age you shouldn't ride thrill rides anymore. I have found nothing. I guess I am still not too old (58) to get excited without dropping to the ground (LOL).

I am an Uber-Chicken and I rode Splash Mountain and Soarin by myself for the first time last October (DS5 refused to ride so we had to swap). I also rode Test Track for the first time that trip. This was after 9 visits to WDW in the past 5 years. Pathetic, huh? I got tired of sitting around and waiting and just generally feeling like a wimp, so I went for it. I have decided that I will ride Big Thunder Mountain (for the first time) on our next trip. DS5 may not want to ride this one, so it may mean going it alone again! The last time I rode Space Mountain was when I was 9, at Disneyland. Maybe one day soon I will work up the nerve to do it again (it has been 30 years).

I say GO FOR IT!!!!!

I am a fellow ride chicken and know how you feel. I actually avoided Maelstrom in Norway for 10 years because of the stupid drop! BTMRR is my favorite ride ever, not just at WDW. There are no big drops and the drops you do experience feel more like big speed bumps to me. The thing about BTMRR is the speed and the turns. If you like Test Track, you might like BTMRR. Sit in the first row. You won't feel as much up there and you tend to go slower on the turns and dips. I somewhat forced my sister to go on it in Jan. and she ended up loving it although she hates rollercoasters too. It is a fun ride and is worth a shot.

Thanks so much for all the encouragement! I think I'm going to go for it. My DD (15) was reading the responses and saying "see mom, I told you we were right!" Who knows, maybe I will even get the courage up to try Space Mountain. I know for sure though that Splash Mountain is out. I have absolutely NO desire to try that one.

On a scale of one to ten, SM would be a one. BTMR might be a two, and R&R would be a seven. In Sept I'll ride EE for the first time. Ten, btw, would be the HulkCoaster at US. Oh, and the ride I'm worried about on this trip is Soaring. The slower and higher, the more terrified I get. But I'm gonna try. We all have our fears. Do what you want and live with the consequences.

In my opinion Space mountain is much worst then BTMR!! The thing on BTMR that scares me is the clink clink going up. But, it is not bad at all.. Space mountain, on the other hand. With the low seats and me being tall, feeling as though I will be flung from the space capsule. No way is that on the same level as BTMR Of course I cant be a chicken, in front of my children and I have to ride but do not let them fool you space mountain is much worst. I do love the hulk though. It is so much fun! For some reason, I am not scared at all on the hulk, It is so smooth, and the coolest ride ever. I rather be on the hulk than space mountain.
