Is Big Thunder Mountain a mild child roller coaster or will my chicken little children kill shortly after we get off the ride?

How old are we talking? Its not that it is a big thrill ride but it is fast and kind of jerky. That's what gives it the feeling of being bigger then it is. My 8 year old daughter loved it but she did comment on that it was very "jerky".

5,7,and will turn 9 year old at the end of this month.

My son started riding it when he was 6 and he loved it.

However, it is jerky in that there are lots of twists and turns. It never inverts and there are no super high climbs and drops. I have severe motion sickness, but even I can do one ride on Big Thunder Mountain!

But each and every child is different!

Have they ever done Goofy's Barnstormer? You might use this as a "stepping stone." That is, try The Great Goofini coaster in Storybook Circus and if that goes well, try Big Thunder.

I would let the children watch people ride for a bit, and let them decide. Definitely do NOT push it on them, because that is one memory you do not want to make! There is a great viewing spot for Big Thunder Mountain past the entrance and up a little hill. It used to be a Kodak Picture Spot. That would be a great place to let them watch the coasters come around and see if they would like to ride.

Problem is from my research this is a very popular ride. The day we do Aventure land and Frontier land we will be getting to the park at 11:10 for our sons Pirates League appointments. Chances are we wil be getting to Big Thunder Mountain some time Between 1:00 and 3:00 so I thought it may be best if we were goint to do it as a FP+ option. May be too late to scdeule some other FP+ option if they decide against it.

Most drops are with turns. This was next step up from barnstormer. My wife, who hates rollercoasters, likes this ride. I mean HATES!!!!!

uhm that sounds promising. May have to add this one to the list. Is there alot of fun things to look at on this ride? One thing about Disney rides I find unbeatable is the themes and detail of the rides.

DS was a few weeks shy of 6 years old when he went on BTMRR for the first time and he LOVED it!

My niece and 2 nephews were 6, 8, & 9... and LOVED it.

BUT all kids are different. Hopefully yours will love it too. :goodvibes

Ah, I see. A later arrival does make it more difficult! I see this is your Adventureland/Frontier Land MK day. Is that your first day at MK? Would they have a chance to ride a more mild roller coaster like The Great Goofini before?

What are your other 2 FPs going to be? It might not be terribly hard to get a Fastpass for something in Adventureland if Big Thunder mountain falls through, but I haven't seen enough to know what availability in the afternoons looks like!

There is always the You Tube videos. You can watch someone's video of Big Thunder and use that to help decide.

I hope you find an answer!

My kids started riding it at aged 2. It is a really mild coaster IMO. It is exciting without a lot of the thrill factors that coaster tend to have. No large drops or climbs. And there is a lot to see within the ride so that can help distract a child who maybe hasn't made up their mind to whether they are having fun or not.

I absolutely hate rollercoasters. If the drops are too big and I feel like I'm coming out of seat, I feel sick. I absolutely love Big Thunder. I've done Space, Splash, Big Thunder, EE, Goofini. Goofini is a good stepping stone as it's very mild and very short. Even if they don't like it, honestly, it's over before you know it. If they love that, Big Thunder is the next step.

Space is very similar but it's in the dark so it feels much faster than it actually is. Space is slower than Big Thunder.

Yes, the theming on this ride is very consistent with Disney standards. There are always things to find. i.e. when going up a lift hill, there are rattlers on the side.. and if you look closely, you can see their tails rattling... there's a goat somewhere chewing on a stick of dynamite. one of the lift hills makes you feel like there's an avalanche.

I think there's even a hidden Mickey done in gears going up the hill. (I may be confusing it with the one at DL as I have done that one many more times)

yes this is our Adventure land Frontier land day. Our FP+ choices for now are Pirates of the Caribbean, Jungle cruise and possibly Big Thunder Mountain. As a back burner idea we wer thinking Haunted Mansion or Under the Sea since we have a ADR for dinner at BOG.

The boys have rode a kiddie coster at the WS Dells. They rode it so much we could not get them off. Our oldest rode a medium coaster but I think he was attempting to impress he cousin a the time. It sounds as if BTM just might be an option for my boys. Now if I can only fit HM and UTS in or Fantasy Land MK morning on our 1st MK day we will be all set.

Mild. My mother hates coasters she rode dueling dragons(I refuse to call it "dragon challenge", stupid...) and felt she was dying. She rode space mountain and felt terrible as well. Yet she can ride BTMR over and over and over.

My slightly wimpy twins loved it at age 5 - two years previously they couldn't even cope with a merry go round!

They moved onto Splash and loved that too. They didn't want to try Space. The only ride they tried and hated was ToT.

I think it's a pretty mild Rollercoaster. My 4 yr old loved it last trip. I'm sure it depends on the kids though!

I don't enjoy most rollercoasters but I adore this one. :thumbsup2

It's a little wild but it's mostly fun.

I am a coaster wimp who hates big drops. I love this ride! In fact, the drop on Splash Mountain is worse for me than this one. It's really pretty mild for a roller coaster.
