Has anyone seen the production of Big River that is currently in Boston? It's one of my favorite shows and I was hoping to hear some reviews before considering getting tickets. The tickets are really cheap and that worries me a little bit.

I haven't, but heard an ad for it yesterday; I was kind of surprised too, it seemed like one of the sponsers was subsidizing the tickets. But they also had asome big name sponsers like TIAA-Cref the mutual fund company. I don't think they would let their name be connected with something questionable.

Having checked the Wang Theater for more info, it seems it's being produced with a group of deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing actors, and is being presented as part of their family series.
The tickets are being subsidised by the Carl and Ruth Shapiro Family, a non profit fund that donates money to the arts.

Thanks.

We checked the Wang. We just were hoping for some reviews before we get tickets. :)

I can't offer a review but I'll bump this back to page one for you in hopes that someone else can offer advice.

If this is the production being done by the Deaf theater West, it is PHENOMENAL!!!!!! I saw it in New York and thought it was an amazing piece of theater. It is performed in both English and American Sign language with voices provided for the deaf actors by other actors in the show. For example.....the narrator is hearing and speaks as well as signs. The actor playing Huck Finn is deaf, so the narrator speaks his part while he signs. After a few minutes your eyes and ears don't even think about the fact that this is not how theater is usually performed. The story explores the differences in people and this show takes it to a whole new level with the unspoken differences between hearing and deaf. They do some unusual things with the sign language as well, including having 2 people sign one sign. Hard to explain, but beautiful to watch. At one point during one of the more inspiring songs, the music stops and all the actors keep "singing" with their hands. You can hear the music in your head. It made me cry it was so pretty.

The hearing actors all learned ASL for this production and perform their parts in both languages. It is truly something to see.

I HIGHLY recommend it and if tickets are inexpensive, all the better. I'm tempted to plan a trip to Boston to see it again, now that I know it is coming there!!!!

I don't know about this particular production, but I love this musical. I have the c.d. at home. Wonderful music and of course a great story.
