How does your child with Autism do at the Beirgarten? Specifically I mean by sitting with strangers? Would they give us a table for 4? Any experiences?
No Autism experience here either, but we had lunch there a couple weeks ago. We had the first seating and our party of 3 was seated with another party of 3. I would think if you sat your child on either end of the table, he/she would really only be close to your family.
I don't know anything about autism, but I can tell you the time we went there for dinner, it was very loud - hard to talk with someone at your table. There are no small tables to be had. We had a party of 9, so we had a table to ourselves, but I am not in a rush to go back.
good opinions everyone! I posted this on the Disabilities board too, but didn't get many responses. Just wondering where I should try to get in at this point
Hi. I am a teacher for a classroom of autistic children. I also happen to have a lot of Disney experience and experience with Beirgarten.
There is no private seating, due to the fact that they are very crowded and need to utilize all the seats that they possibley can.
If I remember correctly there is a bit of an area in the front that children can get up and dance around and stuff when the show is going on. So even though you wll be sitting with another family you may be able to request a seat toward the stage so that your little one can sit at the end of the table and maybe you can get up with them and dance and get some of their energy out. It depends on what the behavior of your child is though.
If your concern is that your child will grab food from others (as I know from lunch time at school with my children is a big issue in lots of autistic children) you may want to call ahead and ask explain the situation to a cast member. There may be some special accomidations that they can arrange for you and your family. If there is nothing that can be done, all I can suggest is that you don't eat there unfortunately. Let me know how it goes. Good luck.
You should read KathyRN's trip reports, Adventures in Autism (and Another Adventure in Autism) She has an autistic son and always shares their dining experiences in her reports!
