Read somewhere bidding closer to the last minute before your trip gets you better deals. Is this true can anyone confirm or deny?

I can't tell you about last minute, but I finally took the plunge and got a car for my dates (5/7-5/16) two days ago. I'd been checking the rates for about a month and hadn't seen anything below $220 for my dates. So I decided to book in Priceline for a rate of $14 for day, which was a few dollars below their recommended price. My bid was accepted and I got my car for $177 (including taxes).

I seem to get about the same deal no matter when I book, but where I save the most money is with the Travelocity special deals. I put in my dates for a car rental, and then there's usually a link to click at the top of the page that has special deals. I have already reserved one for our trip in July this way, it's about half price of what I was expecting to pay for a larger vehicle.

And the other great thing about the Travelocity deals is that it's just a reservation, you don't pay until you get the car. If you find something better or want to change it, it's totally easy to do.

I booked a Jeep Grand Cherokee (full size SUV) thru Costco travel this morning. I got a rate of $117 incl taxes/fees for 6 days, picking up & dropping off at SNA. I booked the exact same car thru Costco, Friday night and it was $135.
