We are taking our Great Niece who is 5 down for the first time this summer. I made reservations at the Boutique in the castle at magic kingdom but I am being told by others that it is better to go to downtown Disney because its bigger and has a better dress selection.

thoughts would be appreciated. Never had a girl so never did this before and do not know much about it

Love to know who told you that. DTD may be bigger (I have no idea) but it does not have a bigger dress selection. The store in the park has all the dresses too. As for one being out of stock, that's possible at any location.
To us, being in the castle IS part of the experience. Without it, not so much worth the effort.

The castle is magical, plus you are in MK and can go meet Princesses after BBB. We would never take the time to mess with doing it at DTD. As far as a better dress selection, I would say they pretty much have the same dress selection. Also, if the castle BBB happens not to have her size in the dress she wants, they will call the Emporium and any other shops in MK that might have it, and it if is anywhere in the park they will bring it over. They did that for DD once. So, I don't think DTD really has much advantage for dress selection or sizing. To me, the DTD is good for people that want the experience, but don't have park tickets, for people that were unable to get a reservation in the castle, or maybe for people that plan to go to Akershus and see Princesses in EPCOT instead of MK and don't have hoppers (although for me that would take too much out of an EPCOT day).

My girls have always done it in the castle. The one at DTD is pretty lame. We always set it up to do their makeovers at around 11am then schedule a lunch at CRT between 12:30 and 1pm. It's their favorite part of our trip each year.

AetoKU, that is exactly what I did, got the BBB reservation for Noon and then we are having lunch in the castle right after

I would stick with the castle. What princess would want to have her hair done in Downtown Disney when she can do it in Cinderella Castle? :)

No question, Cinderella's Castle. Doubt we would do it if the castle didn't have availability.

Castle... because then you can book FP+ for princess meet and greets.

BBB has its own stock of dresses. When a store is out BBB usually has the dress because if they are running low the shipment goes to them first then the rest gets given to the store. I learned this in Feb. when we needed a dress and the store didn't have the size. BBB had it. We has a BBB the next day but wanted the dress as the surprise "you are getting make up as a princess". Because we had a BBB they let us buy the dress a day early but I was told that BBB keeps a larger stock of dresses in all size so every princess has what she needs.

My daughter has done BBB at both locations. DS is a larger location. I would say the dress selection is about the same. They may have a few more dresses at DS. However, my child knew what she wanted before we got there each time. They had it each time. The photo shoot after is basically the same. We did have to wait a bit longer for photos at MK than DS, but that is just luck.

Overall, I liked the Castle more mostly because of the location. You are already in the MK when you are done.

We did castle last year, DD loved it, I hated it lol. It took us a good 5 minutes to push past the crowd of people blocking the door (presumably waiting for cancellations?), and it was cramped inside. I couldn't get a seat anywhere near my DD so I ended up standing and felt like I was in the way of everyone.

This year we had a castle reservation but had to push our trip back and couldn't get another so we're doing Disney Springs. I'm honestly looking forward to having more space to hopefully have a place to sit while DD gets her makeover. We have an 11am appt there and a 2:30 CRT so I'm hoping we can make it work.

That is what we always did too. We would do BBB at 10, and then we would have CRT set for 11:30 or 12:00. I think you have the perfect little Princess plan in place. I don't know how close your CRT ADR is to your appointment, but if for some reason you are running late and don't have time for the photo studio, they will let you eat at CRT first and then go to the BBB studio for pictures.
